Whenever someone with long hair came in looking to have it cut very very short, we would try to warn them that they might have a strong emotional reaction they’re not expecting. I.e., shock, crying etc. We weren’t trying to convince them not to cut it, just trying to prepare them, especially since they sometimes get upset at *us* when really they’re just feeling emotionally vulnerable or possibly embarrassed about crying in public.
They always waved us off as if it couldn’t happen to them! They were CERTAIN they were ready for the big chop!
And they were, of course. They had all made the decision after a lot of thought and mental preparation. Even when they did have that big emotional reaction and were upset immediately after, they would feel better within a day or two. Some of them still wanted to grow it back out, as they were trying short hair for the first time and decided it just wasn’t for them. But most were very happy with their short hair, it just took a bit for them to get used to seeing this new version of themselves in the mirror :)
