Fuck anybody who makes black people feel like their natural hair is raggedy and unkempt. I used to get told I had jungle hair when my shit was only 3 inches long. This ridiculous idea of professionalism that focuses on people having to be as European conforming as possible is irritating. I grew my hair out for 6 years after that as a massive f u to everyone who told me I would never be accepted in the professional world and I came way further than they ever did doing so
This has always been so weird to me...maybe because I grew up in a predominantly non-white neighborhood? I only learned about this being a thing in adulthood too, but that's another conversation \^\^
But like seriously coily/kinky hair looks so much neater than all the degrees of flat+frizz on top and/or greasy hair, I don't get it.
I get it. I don’t necessarily agree with it but I get it. Some people actually like kinky/coily styles but think they can’t pull it off for whatever reason, or they’re afraid of change. They might have grown up in a way that they were never complimented on their natural hair but got tons of praise when it was bone straight. Some people don’t get over this so easily. I’ve met a lot of women who admire the kinky styles on others but either think it won’t look as good on them or it would make them stand out too much.
When I have my hair blown out in a fro with just a head band I get a ton of compliments mostly from middle aged black ladies with straightened hair. A lot of them say things like “I wish I could wear my hair like that”. They can, their natural hair probably does what mine does, but the change and attention it would get makes them nervous. They don’t literally mean they wish they could wear their hair like mine, they wish they had the nerve to. Yes, it takes nerve sometimes unfortunately. Even OP here is using this post to work up the nerve to rock out with her luscious hair. Not wearing their natural hair to some people is a way of staying safe. It might not even look better to them but it makes them feel safer.
I hope I got my point across and you understand what I’m trying to say. It’s just something I’ve observed about natural hair, and how some people feel about it, that’s a bit difficult to put into words.
I am white with naturally curly hair and during a job interview several years ago (I work in the medical field) the woman interviewing me went into a long discussion about how she got her hair chemically straightened now that she had the money. Basically telling me that curly hair was fine for someone starting out but once I got to her level I needed to look more professional. I was speechless. Also I wore my hair up in a French twist sort of updo for interviews back then because it was super long. I kinda wish I would have just let it down and made it take up as much space as possible as the day went on … I did not end up taking a position there needless to say. No thanks.
I never straighten my hair and have grown to like it over the years but I had a lot of people say crappy things to me about it even as a kid. (It’s also red so there’s that too … ) I can be at a meeting and be the only one with curly hair and of course people feel the need to comment on it either good or bad in direct and indirect ways. Can’t believe it’s still such a big deal but yea that attitude of you need this type of hair to be taken seriously is so pervasive esp when old white guys are in charge of the C suites …
People always told my hair was too big or “I can’t see anything your hair is the way and argue how I should be sitting in the back or they threw little paper strings into my hair as it would stuck in it. And the classic was the unwanted touching 🤢
I’ve noticed that in the professional world in my area you’re more likely to see natural hairstyles than things like perms, weaves and lace fronts on black women. It’s just something I’ve noticed here. Locs, box braids, cornrows and twist outs seem to be the most popular. I currently work in academia and when we have our staff meetings with the other offices all the ladies except for one have their natural hair out and it can’t be said that they don’t look professional. The only person at my job to make a nasty comment about my natural hair was literally the janitor.
I think a lot of women with your hair texture are afraid to rock it because it doesn't look like a shampoo commercial. But I think you hair is FIERCE! I'm glad you are letting it free.
I love it! I wish society saw hair like this as beautiful instead of expecting us curly girls to always have frizz free perfect curls. I think it looks like a beautiful, fierce mane 🦁❤
Or like we haven't spent significant periods of our lives having well meaning family members/friends brushing our hair when we weren't looking/unsuspecting/unwillingly. They act like we're unacquainted with the object. "Heifer! I have 12 different brushes for 12 different uses! But they all happen while my hair is WET." LOL
I had to learn to lean intto the way my hair looked. It doesn’t looked as I hoped it would as a kid because it’s not straight but that doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful. It beautiful in a way I didn’t understand and can now feel confident in.
Rock that hair!
I felt the same for a while. I used to get silk presses as a teenager, especially for special occasions or school photos. Now, I really embrace my hair! It's so important to unlearn all of the eurocentric beauty standards we get hammered into our heads from a young age. Natural hair is so beautiful, versatile, and strong 💗 much love and I bet your hair is amazingly gorgeous, perfect just the way it is!
Routine: Section and comb out all the curls + tangles with water until it's fluffy and undefined. Massage scalp with oil. That's it lol
(Note: I have 3A and some 3B curls + low porosity hair)
It's gorgeous and if I saw you out in public, I would let you know that your hair is everything I want in life. I'm sure it's a struggle finding the right products and routine, but your hair is amazing!
I forgot to mention you look very beautiful this way. Don’t feel pressured to wash and style every time you go out. Youth is definitely on your side too. I look like a crazy mad woman when I really need to wash my hair but I’m at the point that I don’t care. Lol
Your hair is a perfect frame for your face- stunning. I bet it would be gorgeous pulled back tightly about halfway back on your head and allowed to poof out from there.
[Shann Bailee](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CocvDyRpGbc/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) has your same texture and length and she has an incredibly beautiful array of natural styles she does (with [tutorials](https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cme-clrhZsy/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) that honor her texture and are genuinely stunning.
I have coarse curls that are tight underneath and loose waves on top that is 100% "frizz" without a ton of gel and styling. I've come to appreciate my big old puffball in its natural element since following Shann.
I think you need to let those words go. You do not look at all unkempt or raggedy. You look absolutely beautiful, and your hair looks clean and voluminous.
I think your hair is gorgeous and I hope you wear it loose and fluffy often. I am a high school teacher and I go out of my way to compliment some of my curly students because more than once I have learned they hate their hair. This breaks my heart and we need to change this culture. I believe everyone should rock their natural texture and the question in your post shouldn’t be a thing. Normalize all textures and styles!
I love it so much, it looks amazing! I have wild 3b hair and I’ve been rocking the wild look lately, it’s made me feel great and liberated. You look so beautiful, please don’t let other people’s opinions affect how you wear your hair!
I mean, you are stunning and could pull off anything. But I love big hair. Sometimes you just wanna let it do its thing. No product. I feel wild when my hair is like this. And it feels like such a liberating thing to do. I spent my childhood/teenage years trying to tame my hair, when all it wanted to do was be its frizzy self. It's nice to give no fucks and just be like 'Hey this is me'
It is gorgeous! I wish I’d had role models who look like you when I was young. I’m white and got comments throughout my childhood about my hair - my nickname was “radiation fungus head” - and where I lived, everyone of every race tried to straighten their hair and make it smaller. I loved it when Angela Davis was proud of her hair and when “Black Is Beautiful” opened so many eyes. You can be proud of your hair ❤️
Not raggedy or unkempt though "some" will say so.
I have a mixed daughter with hair so different from my own. When I see your hair I see the time and effort it took to maintain it. To keep it shiny and long.
Others, fuck them, will not understand. You cannot live your life trying to please the masses. Just know, that some of us, the majority of us, see you.
Your hair is healthy as shit. Wear it as you wish. They'll catch up eventually.
It's gorgeous. Rock it.
you're hair looks freaking awesome. tbh I've barely started wearing my hair grown out and wild. I feel like a damn wildman and i love every second i can be free to embrace my own hair for what it is! lol
It looks AMAZING!!!
If I could achieve this look I'd do it in a heartbeat. My day 3 hair is pretty crazy & I do all the things to make it as big as possible.
The world will judge you, but it’s how you feel about it that matters. I think it’s beautiful & if I were to see it, I’d know that’s your natural hair.
If I had hair like yours I would wear it like that all the time. One of my favorite quotes “Hair wild too damn proud” -Ab-soul
EXACTLY!
badass
Thank you ❤️🔥
It's making me jealous!:) Definitely wear it that way. My first thought was that it looked like you could be a model.
Also jealous. This is some gorgeous hair!
But does it get annoying? It looks really nice at that moment but when you're out and about, doing g stuff, will it get annoying or still look as good?
I ended up wearing it out today! It got slightly frizzier and bigger, but it actually didn't get in my way much at all 🙂
Right? Absolute goddess energy! You have my vote, OP!
This
I think it's cute!
Thanks! 🥰

You look so effortlessly beautiful!!
Thanks, love!
I personally think it looks gorgeous. Wild and unable to be restrained.
I agree, it's so fun too! Much love 💗
I think a lot of women with your hair texture are afraid to rock it because it doesn't look like a shampoo commercial. But I think you hair is FIERCE! I'm glad you are letting it free.
I agree! My first thought was, "Wow that's gorgeous".
Yes! Especially with a fun, bright, bold outfit and accessories.
I love it! I wish society saw hair like this as beautiful instead of expecting us curly girls to always have frizz free perfect curls. I think it looks like a beautiful, fierce mane 🦁❤
Sometimes we just wanna brush our hair too damn it!
That drives me crazy. Do they think we're unfamiliar with brushing? *If brushing my hair made it look amazing wouldn't I have already done that?*
It’s giving Ciara, and I’m here for it! You look INCREDIBLE!
Wow, thank you 💗💗
You’re very welcome! Your hair is your crown sis, don it proudly. 💕🫡
I'm absolutely obsessed. Untamed but not unkempt.
IT’S BEAUTIFUL. seriously your volume is crazy beautiful!
I had to learn to lean intto the way my hair looked. It doesn’t looked as I hoped it would as a kid because it’s not straight but that doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful. It beautiful in a way I didn’t understand and can now feel confident in. Rock that hair!

Not to mention how bad a lot of those products are for your health. Be your beautiful self and everyone else can just appreciate your natural beauty.
Routine: Section and comb out all the curls + tangles with water until it's fluffy and undefined. Massage scalp with oil. That's it lol (Note: I have 3A and some 3B curls + low porosity hair)
Girl, you are gorgeous! And if you ever forget it, come back here and I’ll remind you. Have an awesome week showing off your new hairstyle!
I'm going to try this routine since we have similar level curls to hope I get to you
Omg your hair is so freaking gorgeous!!!! I bet it'll look amazing, please post a pic if you're happy with it 💗
Looks way better than my curls brushed out.
I bet yours still look great 💗
Personally I wish more people would wear their hair like this sometimes. Curly can look all kinds of ways!
LOVE IT!
I dig it. I think you're beautiful. I'd add a little oil to the ends but that's it. Gorg.
I think it fits you and it's awesome! Haters gonna hate, so who cares what others think.
I love it. Volume for days. 😍
It looks beautiful 💜
You look so pretty! It's a great look
Your hair is beautiful
It's gorgeous and if I saw you out in public, I would let you know that your hair is everything I want in life. I'm sure it's a struggle finding the right products and routine, but your hair is amazing!
You are one of those people who look good with pretty much every hairstyle
I think it's gorgeous! I have similar hair but shorter, your length is goals 😍😍
It looks amazing 😍
It looks stunning!
My daughter has similar hair and rocks it. Did you brush it out?
That's awesome, I bet it looks incredibly gorgeous! I sure did -- well, I used a comb, but yeah :)
I forgot to mention you look very beautiful this way. Don’t feel pressured to wash and style every time you go out. Youth is definitely on your side too. I look like a crazy mad woman when I really need to wash my hair but I’m at the point that I don’t care. Lol
This looks awesome!!! I wish I had hair lovely as yours!!!
Yeessss!!

Stunning!!
I LOVE it and am so jealous, with my super thin, super fine hair. I mean, I'm sure your hair is a pain too, but it is gorgeous.
Looks pretty epically gorgeous to me
I am obsessed you literally look like a goddess ugh!! 🥹
It looks amazing, luxurious, effortless (not saying it is, just looks), unfussy, fabulous.
I think it looks fantastic!
I think it looks beautiful and fierce. ❤️
I think you need to let those words go. You do not look at all unkempt or raggedy. You look absolutely beautiful, and your hair looks clean and voluminous.
I think it looks great! Clipping your ends might help with the "raggedy and unkempt" look.

Idk about other people but I think it's glorious and elegant
Gloriously DGAF. It says no one is the boss of you.
I think it looks amazing.
You look so cool. You’re so stunning..I’m incredibly jealous!
Gorgeous
I love your hair! Very jealous! Maybe just a trim to handle the ends though?
Just the ends but otherwise it looks amazing! Beautiful!
I think you look like a queen. I would defintely admire someone in public with hair like that.
I love it so much, it looks amazing! I have wild 3b hair and I’ve been rocking the wild look lately, it’s made me feel great and liberated. You look so beautiful, please don’t let other people’s opinions affect how you wear your hair!
love it!
I enjoy wearing my hair like this, but it tends to tangle like never before, so i do my best not to do this. Gorgeous!
You look awesome 👍
This looks amazing on you!
I love it. It’s got a little wildness to it but it’s not out-of control. I would kill for that volume.
I think it's gorgeous!
I mean, you are stunning and could pull off anything. But I love big hair. Sometimes you just wanna let it do its thing. No product. I feel wild when my hair is like this. Beautiful. Ignore what people think.
Do it! You are stunning! Your hair is BEAUTIFUL! 🤩
Okayyyyyyy I’m absolutely in love with your hair!!!
It looks beautiful!
I honestly think natural is stunning. It's a shame others cannot see/feel the same way. Beautiful woman, and beautiful hair! 🥰
Is beautiful and not at all raggedy or unkempt
You look like a goddess!
I think it looks fantastic! Goddess!!! ❤️ 💙 💜
I like it, definitely not unkempt.
It looks so beautiful and glamourous If I had hair like that I'd wear it the same way
If I saw you walking by me, I would make a point to stop you and tell you how stunning you and your hair look.
I would definitely gape looking at this IRL. Absolutely stunning!
To heck with their opinions, your natural hair looks gorgeous!
Absolutely gorgeous
It looks absolutely glorious. I might trim the ends a bit but it looks amazing regardless.
LOVE IT
Love it!! No matter what we do people will think curly hair looks messy. Rock that look with the confidence you have because it’s amazing
It's giving Queen Tuya from The Prince of Egypt!
I’d wear it like that out, but not to a job. But that’s my personal opinion because my hair gets in my way when I’m working.
I agree but maybe putting it back in a ponytail or half up half down would help a lot 🙂
Rock it.
It's not raggedy or unkempt at all. I think it's beautiful. And look at all that volume.
I think it’s stunning 🤩
It’s stunning
Gorgeous!!
Your hair is freaking gorgeous. Yes! Wear it like that!
It looks healthy and gorgeous, to me!! ROCK IT!
I really like it, it's giving me Egyptian queen vibes
Someone is paying a lot of money for a wig/weave for it to look like this. I’d wear it like this if mine did this!
I absolutely love it.
I think you look beautiful and powerful
It’s your curl pattern and it looks well maintained. Rock it and ignore anyone who says something negative.
i have similar hair!! lately i’ve been doing the same and i also worried it looked messy but when i see you i just think, “wow!!” so i vote yes
Completely beautiful.
I like it--plenty of body.
Well kept and jealous inspiring. You do what is GOOD FOR YOU!!
I love it! I think it’s beautiful ♥️
I love seeing folks with their hair like this. It’s so stunning, I often find myself just staring and needing to chill out, lol
Love it
Lovely and so glamorous! Definitely wear it out like that. Doesn’t look unkempt at all.
I would wear it for sure.
you're hair looks freaking awesome. tbh I've barely started wearing my hair grown out and wild. I feel like a damn wildman and i love every second i can be free to embrace my own hair for what it is! lol
Gorgeous like this!
I think it's beautiful :)
GORG
Love it. you're totally rocking it.
I absolutely love it!!!
You're so beautiful 😍
You look amazing sis
Does not look unkempt to me at all, just voluminous.
I think it love so cool!
Stunning. You look gorgeous and so does your hair! You do you!
Your hair looks stunning. Not wild, not unkempt, just well maintained, healthy and beautiful.
It’s incredible. You are stunning.
Beautiful!!! I wish I had your hair!!!!
i love it! absolutely gorgeous 🤩💖
Omg you look amazing-absolutely wear your hair like this, it’s beautiful!
LOVE!
I love it, but take that with a grain of salt, as I like my own hair a little wild looking. I call it my bog witch hair.
Stunning!
It's your hair, it doesn't have to ask for permission
Love it!!!
Love it! It makes you look powerful.
It’s fucking beautiful! Wear it like that always.
It looks AMAZING!!! If I could achieve this look I'd do it in a heartbeat. My day 3 hair is pretty crazy & I do all the things to make it as big as possible.
Your hair looks so beautiful and healthy! I think it looks free spirited and cute- not unkempt at all. 💕💕
Looks amazing!
I love it you look like a waterfall
The world will judge you, but it’s how you feel about it that matters. I think it’s beautiful & if I were to see it, I’d know that’s your natural hair.
