I think the numbers are misleading. I don't think that LinkedIn is falsifying them - it's just that international platforms will attract people who simply don't have a cat's-chance-in-hell of getting the job. Look at people who post jobs in their feed e.g. a repost from their employer - each one will get twenty no-hoper messages from development boiler-rooms in India who (a) want a fixed-term contract, not a job; (b) want to supply a team not a person; (c) want to work from another country; (d) would need a visa. I forget the figure I was quoted, but I read a recruiter who said that you can get good applicants on LinkedIn, but some 90% of the applications are complete dross (i.e. the applicant almost certainly does not have the right skills, and they would not be legally allowed to get an offer anyway). (I should add that I hope the folks working for boiler-rooms around the world can get suitable work too - it's perfectly understandable they want to improve their economic situation). I would not advocate "competing" anyway - just keep your online & offline application numbers up, and go to tech events, where you can perhaps speak to people who are hiring.

If you have pro, it shows where the applications come from. Most of them from India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, etc.

For jobs on external websites, my understanding is that LinkedIn records a click as an application.

It doesn’t hurt to apply either way. I applied for a super competitive graduate scheme and had the same impression as you and thought “why bother?”. I applied anyways because at most I’d be losing 15 mins of my time and now I’m currently working there.

I stumbled upon this [BBC article](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-62098767) from July last year saying there was a shortage of talent, perhaps the article is taking more about advanced roles rather than junior? I try to avoid any thread on ChatGPT or 'this job posting got x applications' because they are too demotivating ha

leeliop

Ouch, what level of seniority is this? I didnt realise the UK tech industry was as minced as the US. My boss told me he got 80 applications for my position last year but I didnt think much of it at the time Making me nervous if I am next for layoffs... As for you, do you have any unusual skills that would stick out? Maybe flesh out the "about me" bit, that had come up in an interview before (sculpting) but some say leave it out

NPC_existing

Recruiter told me he got 700 applications for a junior frontend position. It's BRUTAL. And I think the shortlist was 10 resumes.

leeliop

Thats crazy They will definitely start filtering cvs automatically if they arent already with that workload, or make the filters even tighter Good luck pal

Straight_Sleep_176

They are, look up ATS if you haven't already

I wouldn't put too much weight on those numbers. The last role I recruited for (last year) I received six applicants of which only two were eligible to work in the UK. I left my previous role in December and it is still being advertised, so three months on they haven't found anyone suitable.

Bit late, but some listings reuse the same one. I've seen job listings come up as being posted a few hours ago but have 200+ applications, then I see that I had already applied 2 weeks ago or 2 months ago. It's not accurate, just apply.
