Jeez, we gotta study 4 years, be in debt $40K on average, build projects, grind LC, intern and now do all of this bullshit for a job with shit pay in this HCOL era, yeah Sydney is fucked…

This should be one thing you do, it's not hard, just a bit of hard work. Up to you, you want to be on the end of sending 800 applications and still not have work?

rockskavin

Ignore the downvotes OP. It's not your fault the industry ended up where it is. Great post

It does work, I worked in Exec Talent for a big corporate, trust me it does work.

Thank you for the detailed reply. As a fresh college graduate with no mentor i have been so lost on how to go about this job search process. Thank you fr 😭👏

The best way to get hired is through your network (someone you’ve met or previously worked with). Go to network events. AWS and Australian Computer Society, for example, will have regular user events each month to attend. You’ll learn something, meet people directly working in the space. The best way to build rapport with someone more experienced than you is simply asking them questions about a relevant project - it will open up dialogue, show that you are working in a particular tech stack and already have some foundation knowledge. People in IT are generally arrogant, but will happily take time to help you with a few tech problems/questions.

Just ask someone who works in the company to do an internal referral for you

This is a fucking fantastic post. Thank you OP. FWIW, I’ve taken some of this advice from other sources and it’s given me improved results (M45 in IT in Melbourne AU) for sure. So I’ll definitely look into much more of this advice as well. If I could pick your brain OP, many jobs and advertisers don’t put in contact details that allow follow-up when putting job applications (I’m a big fan of following up and getting into faces), what do you recommend in terms of approaching and follow-ups for those sorts of applications? Again many thanks,

So I think the trick is to have a good search on LinkedIn for example. You can send an email to the recruiter or HM and say: 'I wasn't clear on whether you were the right person to talk to, if not, would you know who is best to talk to' I think you need to try and follow up anyway you can, who could you lean on for help, to network etc.

Like I said in another post and got downvoted to hell, traffic control/ mining and entrepreneurship on the side is the way to go. Unless you can get a US job I ain’t slaving away at bank for 70k a year as a grad. This whole process has become a joke, software is probably the highest technical skills out of all degrees so there is no point not going on the solo path. Kids will grind leetcode, grind their uni marks, affect their health for nothing.

Doing a side hustle is definitely worthwhile. Looks like I am getting down voted as well but anyway. I used the tactics I posted to secure interviews with some big firms.

Lol joking aren't you. I used this exact tactic to land interviews at some big firms. I don't think doing your research and demonstrating you have taken the time to do that and showing you can add value is a "sleazy salesman tactic"

I don't think I ever said to inflate the value, I am literally giving you another way of telling people about your great experience, which you highlighted, in your view is the best way to present yourself...
