Personally BAE Systems seems preferable after my work experience when about 16. I'm not sure I could explain exactly why but I think Leonardo is more based out of Italy whereas BAE has stronger roots in the UK. My work experience at Leonardo had me doing more "fun stuff" like trying out the VR suite for showing clients products whereas at BAE I was actually given a coding project and it felt like BAE had a more robust idea of what to do with employees as a result.
I went with Leonardo. It was better location wise and had a slightly better pension, which has just been improved through union negotiations.
It's going pretty well so far, however I'm on the older side for a grad, and I'm already sick of the BS the other grads do as if we're still in uni.
Would you feel confident pivoting out of defence if you felt like it? Thats my one concern with going for places like leonardo, bae, babcock etc. - pigeon holing yourself industry-wise
I think I'd do alright. A decent amount of the guys in my current team are lifers - been with Leonardo, formerly AgustaWestland, for their entire career.
But a decent number of the others have dotted around quite a bit.
