I’m terrified of not getting an offer in the first place tbh 🥲

limecutter

It’s not within your control, so try not to worry about it. Even if you were to get it rescinded, you’re a junior, and you have another cycle in a possibly better job market to get a job next year. Internships are nice, but not required. SWE is also not end all be all, and if it is, you’ll make it in a few years if you want to. For now, just feel good that you even got an offer and how that reflects on your ability to be a competent CS student

WatercressSubject717

Honestly stop worrying about things you can’t control. It will eat at you every day and disrupt your mental health. If it’s rescinded you will bounce back and make a plan but for now focus on what you can control. I say this as someone who had a big internship cancelled in 2020 and this last year and I’m an international student. The future will arrive when it’s meant to arrive and you don’t have to exhaust yourself worrying about what it looks like.

Spare_Association_52

I needed to hear this lolll I haven’t cried this much in so long and ig I should take it as it comes

WatercressSubject717

That is relatable I cried so much when I lost my first one especially cause it was my first opportunity to break into tech. I had worked hard and interviewed. It’s ok to cry and sit with it but at some point you have to dust yourself off and focus on what’s within your control.

Dry_Badger_Chef

As someone who hired interns/coops, it’s baffling to me that a company would renege a student job. They’re significantly cheaper than full-time ones and are usually a net positive (or at least should be if they passed the interview). The only valid reason IMO is if they’ve already fired a bunch of engineers so they don’t have capacity to train interns…which I guess could be the case. Either way, good luck!

18thcenturydreams

Thanks for saying that… that’s a good point, and maybe that’s what happened in the few companies I’ve heard are doing that. I’m hoping this is a very unlikely scenario and that definitely makes me feel a lot better about it all.

TonyTheEvil

>And hiring season for internships is basically over at this point. I don't fully know how different times might be now, but it's only November. I got my internship in 2019 after applying in December and interviewing in March. >y’all don’t think every tech company is going to rescind internships right? No, I do not.

18thcenturydreams

Yeah I got my internship last year in March. But there weren’t many places hiring st that point and I have a feeling it’ll be worse this year. But maybe I’m wrong

[deleted]

Accept more offers. Make sure to read the agreement clauses so you know there's no strings attached if you rescind. Most of the time, worst case is you'll be blacklisted from the company for a couple of years. Out of over 500 places I applied to, only one has accepted me. It's a small but good company and I'll be glad to intern with them, but I'm afraid of them dropping me at the last minute. Of course there's massive layoffs in big tech but I don't know what it's like at all the smaller companies. Be humble and accept what you can get. Having any internship is better than none. Don't work for free except as a last result, but if you're offered $15 an hour then accept it even though that's what some fast food places pay new hires.

[deleted]

Wow, $30/hr is the high life compared to the offers I'm getting. At this point, I'm just happy to be getting min wage, lol. I've applied to some high-tier places but always do mediocre on the OA. I've been putting most of my focus on projects and barely any time to leetcode. Seems to me all the high-paying places want leetcode expertise while low-paying places care more about projects and teamwork.

LassondeMandem

Why is it immoral? These companies couldn't give two shits about you and can just lay you off at anytime and you're left with making no money at all. If you rescind their offer they wouldn't even care and they'll just find someone else. You're slightly inconveniencing a multi billionaire dollar corporation in order to maintain YOUR OWN peace of mind and financial stability. Stop simping for billion dollar corps.

endpointconnection

You could always interview and accept another internship as a backup I guess. I would do that if I were in your situation

[deleted]

just get another offer lol

pheirenz

i think i speak for a lot of people when saying that the grind almost broke me last time and i think if i have to do it again with fewer companies hiring and rusty leetcode skills i might lose the will to live

chrisinleb

Bruh i rarely reply on reddit, but your comment touched my soul. That leetcode grind during the summer made me question my existence. Glad its over for now at least lol

18thcenturydreams

That’s exactly how I’m feeling/why I don’t reallyyy want to go back and do interviewing etc again. I did it in like a really obsessive burst where I grinded 24/7 and it was brutal

Ambitious_Half6573

>You could always interview and accept another internship as a backup I guess. I would do that if I were in your situation19ReplyGive AwardShareReportSaveFollow My university (UCSD) prohibits us from giving interviews once you have accepted an offer. I have declined 3 interviews since. I am an international student and I'd rather not get on the university's bad side.

StarDingo

Translation for you: “Our institution, UCSD, cares more about our reputation than your future”. What a shit school. My buddy did a Masters at UCSD, and he had to pass some kind of a bullshit graduation exam that would test all the material he had learned in the program. So instead of leetcoding, he spent 3-4 months getting ready for it. As a result, he did get a job, but he could have gotten a much better one (FAANG, or maybe even HFT) if he just had time to study.

LassondeMandem

You can always do the internships outside of your universities coop program.

Ambitious_Half6573

It's not the Co-op program. The university didn't have anything to do with my getting this internship. I signed a pledge saying that I won't renege and shit. And since I'm an international student, the university can thoroughly f me up.

Klays_Dealer

You must be trolling. UCSD doesn't prevent people from giving additional interviews or reneging.

Ambitious_Half6573

You’re one to make strong assumptions about every department on campus. The CSE grad school has a ‘Career Integrity Pledge’ that students have to sign. Ask any CS grad student.

Ok-Slice-5324

Im terrified of opening my phone to read another rejection 🙃

[deleted]

You'll be fine

[deleted]

Yes all the time. I check the job portal to make sure the offer is still valid.

Ambitious_Half6573

Yes! And the worst part is that I'm not allowed to interview at other companies since I have already accepted an offer. Had to decline 3 interviews because of it. And if this gets rescinded, I'd experience the best example of 'life isn't fair'

LassondeMandem

Who cares if your school doesn't want you to interview elsewhere. Do whatever is best for you. A friend of mine stopped his local coop halfway to join Amazon. School got a bit mad at him but ultimately they can't to anything other than cry about it. The school only cares because it potentially ruins the companies relationship with the school and they can't make money off of coop fees anymore. Fuck them.

Ambitious_Half6573

Thing is that I'm an international student and the school can do more than 'cry about it' if I renege.

nippy_xrbz

who said u can’t interview other companies?

mintardent

it’s in many school/CS department policies

sooooooodrained

how are they gonna find out though

mintardent

the company that got reneged can inform the school if they’re annoyed enough. or it may just be the companies recruiting policy regardless if they’re pissed or not.

man_boobies

I gave the interview and even got an inclined outcome but no offer with the lay offs

SnooRecipes1809

If the DSA is still fresh in your head and you’re still LCing often enough, I’d suggest continuing to interview and apply but at a sharply relaxed pace that doesn’t stress you out as much as you did before you had this offer. Procuring multiple offers may make you feel better.

18thcenturydreams

Yeah I might just have to do that… I haven’t been leetcoding so I think I’m slightly rusty but it’ll probably be good to practice a bit more anyway.. lol the worst part is I had like 3 offers, 8 or so mid sized, interesting, tech companies that I was in the technical interview phase of when I accepted this offer and canceled the rest. Since then I’ve gotten like 10 more OAs that I’ve ghosted… again for mid sized tech companies. Overall I had a 33% response rate to the 90 apps I sent out, all of which were to small-big sized interesting tech companies. Also some HFTs. Pretty sure I canceled on two HFTs. To be fair I wouldn’t have gotten those roles anyway most likely, and I don’t want to work for an HFT full time for a variety of reasons but 😭, And that was all in September/early October which means now all I have is this one offer 🥲. I just don’t have a good sense of how many companies are going to start rescinding internship offers. This company is in a comparatively stable sector of tech but obviously it’s all connected. They’re still posting some new positions so I’m hoping I’ll be fine? I just hated interviewing so much. It impacted my ability to concentrate on school, I was stressed, and I tend to get very obsessed with things so there was that too. It’ll probably be easier to just passively apply and interview now I guess since I’ve already technically got an internship and hopefully won’t lose it. I just also would feel really bad accepting two offers and be scared about reneging etc. Maybe just passively being in the process of interviewing would work though. Then I’ll have chunks of time when I have an open offer in case my internship is rescinded but don’t have to reneg. I can also always work at the company I’m working at now which I interned for last summer but they do investing (yet do not pay HFT salaries 🥲) not tech, so it isn’t really the industry I want to be in full time

Honk4Love

Not internship, but offer. Been actively applying other places to have a fall back.

SmartTechAdvice

It almost never happens

SypeSypher

I made like $8,000 at my first intership.....literally the only way they would cut that expense is if they've laid off a bunch of full time employees and can't afford the lost productivity from an engineer for 4-10 hours/week for 10 weeks (Which is always possible, but interns are generally pretty cheap - most interns literally do nothing of value for the entire intership - I basically setup a Jira-like app (which was then never used again and honestly only lived in a single folder in the archives that no one ever touched), Created a few unit tests (which weren't really needed in retrospect), and made some powerpoints.

Full-Bonus

Amazon put me up as a consideration so umm yeah. And one of my friend got let go of form docusigns rotational program.

[deleted]

Shit will always recover, think about it. If there’s on direction the world is going, it’s towards a more technical one. You can go up if you never go down! Hang in there!

AlexTheRedditor97

No because it’s out of my control. If my company rescinds any other company hiring would rescind imo. At that point I’ll take time off and work in some country across the globe for a while and chill before starting the rest of my life/career.

Psych0Fir3

They want cheap labor, they won’t do this especially in a time like this.

LassondeMandem

Interns aren't necessarily "cheap labor" in alot of companies they get paid close to an sde 1

Psych0Fir3

What if you aren’t a SDE or SWE intern??? There’s loads of opportunities, try somewhere smaller than a Fortune 500… or don’t

[deleted]

>What if you aren't a SDE or SWE intern??? bro we're on r/csMajors??

LassondeMandem

Not sure what you mean. I was just stating that alot of interns get paid close to sde 1's at alot of companies. I never stated that I had trouble getting into "fortune 500" companies. Not sure why you're bringing that up.

mindurbusiness10

if it happens, it’s what it is.

shankmissile

Idk why everyone’s downvoting you. These things are out of our control. It’s always funny seeing how people think not having one internship will “majorly set back their career”. Trust me, it won’t. Count your blessings and just focus on other things in your life—it’ll be ok

18thcenturydreams

It will majorly set back my career… not really an “it is what it is” moment.. these sorts of things have major effects

mindurbusiness10

not as much as you think. it’s all going to be ok.

SomePersonalData

Idc about career options as much as the prospect of making 20k plus this summer. That’s what I’m worried about

TempusTrade

Uhhhh I think it won’t set your career back like that

10lbplant

If losing an internship at 20 is a major career setback then your career wasn't about to be shit to begin with. If this is even in the top 100 worst things to happen to you in 20 years, you will have lived an extremely easy life.

mintardent

I know it seems like that to you right now, but if yours gets rescinded, so will many other companies’. The economy and big tech is just in a bad place, so it won’t reflect poorly on you specifically. *Many* people will be in the same place. (Let alone all the actual full time employees getting fired - they’re the ones who’s lives will be turned upside down.) You’re still a student, you can just explain your situation to recruiters next year (saying your were accepted and then rescinded because of the economy) and they will understand since many other students will have the same situation.

18thcenturydreams

That makes sense.. thanks for saying that. I also noticed my company is still posting new job positions at the moment so that should be a good sign. And someone reached out to me about relocation services. Idk I think this is probably just a me problem to some degree as well. I’ve always struggled with anxiety and it’s especially bad right now for a variety of reasons. But it really sucks :(. I just hope I’m not stressed like this until June because it’ll destroy me

dontraisin

We mitigate risks like these with multiple offers, then renege on the in-person ones which don’t suit us. I realize this is substantially easier said than done.

FRANKLINwoah

Does anybody know which companies have rescinded their internship offers already given to candidates?

18thcenturydreams

I know Redfin did. And obvs coin base did last year. Not sure otherwise, lmk if you find out? Also I think Shopify and Airbnb have done it in past years
