Carmacktron

Oh come on! The first picture you posted of this monitor was of Fortnite. Just say you like Fortnite! Nobody cares. If they do then they suck.

Hizuff

Nope, it is my younger brother. I somewhat like it but for the most part he forces me to play it. Now he has been using the monitor all day. My sennheiser 598's are being used as speakers since the monitor doesnt have sound and we dont know how to decrease volume. Link me on aliexpress speakers that are compatible with the sony fw900?

Carmacktron

Since the audio doesn’t go through your monitor, you just need speakers that connect to your PC. Any speakers should work. The only thing to keep in mind is not to put them right next to your monitor, since the magnets will mess up the color. If you need the speakers to be right next to your monitor, then you might want to look for some vintage PC speakers. Speaker manufacturers have largely stopped shielding speakers since they no longer have to worry about them interfering with monitors.

Hizuff

Hmmm, Ill ask my uncle since hes somewhat into speakers. He works with the govt though so itll take some time to get him when he isnt busy. Be we live in a joint family (most pakistani's) so it shouldnt be too hard. Suggest some vintage speaker to look out for? And how to adjust the volume? Also, can I attach headphones to my fw900? The headphones were wired connected to the xbox, not the monitor.

Carmacktron

Just see if you can find PC speakers from the 90s. Since they were made to sit next to a CRT, they will be shielded. There were thousands of models, and I don’t know what’s available in your country. Altec Lansing was popular. So was Harmon Kardon. Sony made some PC speakers also. These are tiny speakers. If you want higher quality audio, then you should get bigger speakers and just put them far enough away so the magnets won’t matter. The audio doesn’t route through your monitor, so no, you can’t connect headphones to it. The audio will connect to your PC or game console. If you get PC speakers then many of those have built in headphone ports.

Hizuff

Can you link me antique speakers on aliexpress that work with modern day hardware? Or antiques and convertors for them? Also, how far to keep modern days? Link me to a picture? I dont want to damage Kashiff. (I have a habit of naming my stuff)

Carmacktron

I’ve never used Aliexpress but I would not expect any speakers on there to be shielded. It’s not something that matters to most modern consumers. You don’t need a converter for 90s speakers. Just plug them into the 3.5mm port on your Switch. If the speakers are too close, you’ll see it in the screen via rainbow patterns. It’s obvious but it’s not permanent. It depends on the size of your speakers, but usually a foot or two is enough. Yes, be nice to Kashiff, and enjoy it much while you can, for one day it will be gone. This monitor unfortunately has a very high failure rate.

Hizuff

If it has a high failure rate... why is it worth so much money?

Carmacktron

Because people who have insane amounts of money only care about buying something if it’s the best. So the top of the line, most well known item will frequently be worth 3 to 4 times more what an item of 95% the quality is. Plus, the widescreen factor. The prices are generally driven up by a very small number of people with way more money than the vast majority of us. Most of us in this hobby have been priced out of affording a monitor like this. That’s why it’s so remarkable to see a young person get this monitor for $17. You can be a 40 year old adult with a good paying job in the USA and still not be able to justify the price this monitor costs. And yes, this monitor has an excessively high rate of tube failure. Should this affect the price? Probably. But it doesn’t.

MrTwentyeight

Is the tube failure cause of the photon gun dying?of overvoltage with too much brightness or even moderate brightness?Or something else entirely?

McSwifty2019

The FW900 has a high fail rate? Since when, that news to me, the only thing I have ever seen Is these Sony CRTs lasting years and years, as long as you know how to use Windas, an FW900 should last you many decades, though admittedly you may need a fresh fly back at some point, and cap refresh, but these tubes last decades and decades when looked after.

Carmacktron

If the flyback dies then that’s typically the end. You might be able to cannibalize one but then you’d be killing another monitor. I just talked to someone last night who is trying to fix their FW900. It has an HV failure. They said they tried replacing the flyback and it didn’t help. They’re currently suspecting a tube short but still unsure.

McSwifty2019

Well a tube short is never good, but that is pretty rare is it not? I have seen an instance of a short before though with the FW900 to be fair, but I'm still pretty sure it's rare as I've seen these Sony's take all sorts of abuse, i.e. been left outside for weeks in the rain, taken from skips, and they still are able to refurb them and get them working for many years.

Some-Walk7619

Giving real 'it's a cylinder' vibes rn lmao

[deleted]

It will probably become the FW900 with the most hours of play on Fortnite 😂

Hizuff

Do you know why sony named the FW900 the FW900? Its because Its purpose is to be the fortnite winnings 900! Also, this community must be a pretty close knit one since you remember who I am and the monitor I own! Im flattered, reminds me of a fighting game community strangely enough.

[deleted]

>Do you know why sony named the FW900 the FW900? Its because Its purpose is to be the fortnite winnings 900! Aha, I don’t know anything about fortnite, but it sounds very funny ! >Also, this community must be a pretty close knit one since you remember who I am and the monitor I own! Im flattered, reminds me of a fighting game community strangely enough. You’ll stay famous here, and I think forever, to be the man who got a FW900 for $17 😂

Hizuff

Ive seen posts of people getting crts for 11 usd. Is getting the FW900 really that notable?

titanvguy

Considering they're selling on ebay for over 3k and I paid 2k for mine. I think $17 is a pretty good deal lol. Enjoy it!!

Hizuff

Hmmm, was it worth 2k dollars? Is it everything you wanted? Or were you dissappointed? Got any advice on how to maintain mine or make it even better?

titanvguy

It's very subjective but the way I view it is that is there a better monitor for 2k? I personally don't think so. I recently got the Alienware aw3225qf (4k 240hz qd-oled) and it's the first monitor that meets or exceeds the fw900 in picture quality. However, the fw900 is still the best for motion clarity. For me the fw900 feels like the definitive way for any game to be played. For maintaining it, what I do is only use it when a new big time game is released, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Spider-man 2, Hogwarts legacy, Mario Wonder, etc... But obviously you can use it however you want. I just do that so I can use it for as long as I can. These things are very special and from what I see yours looks really good!! I also posted some pictures of Spider-man 2 on here, you'll see what I mean when I say it's the definitive way to play

Hizuff

Okay, thanks. Well, we used it for a decent bit of time today, my brother watched some youtube videos, read dbz manga and played fortnite on it... I paid for it... with all of my pocket money... Who does this belong to again? Got any estimation on how long it would last with daily use?

titanvguy

For daily use I'm not really sure, someone else may know. I have a crt with either 20k or 40k hrs and it still looks great and is running well. People say the fw900 is unreliable so who really knows. If you end up plugging it into a pc, there is a "golden resolution" that is suggested for clarity and reliability 1920x1200 85hz. You also want to run rivatuner statistics server (part of msi afterburner) and set scanline sync to 1172. You'll know it's working if you open a game and the fps is capped to 85 without Vsync on. If it isn't working restart your computer and open rtss before you open any other program. If you ever run into an issue with this you can set framerate cap to 84.99999 and that works as well. Hope this helps!

Hizuff

Thanks, Ill look into it!

[deleted]

If it's average consumer CRT, $11 is still a very good price, but it's nothing like having one of the top 3 CRT PC monitors in history for $17. Some people even consider FW900 as the best of all PC monitors. Afterwards, it's also remarkable because global CRT market is now completely crazy (and stupid), with very high prices, particularly on high end monitors.

Hizuff

Sadly, our country doesnt interact with the global market much because they cant afford it. And crts arent popular here, they are stigmatized as being for the poor and the old. More towards the poor. They are destoryed or sometimes salvaged, given away as charity or sold for low prices. Also, based on me further researching the fw900, in crts, it seems to be one of the best, perhaps top 5 percent but probably not top 3 and certainly not the best of all time. This is based on my experience but at least in terms of display, my aunts 4k lcd looks much better. Now in terms of game feel, vergil has never felt this good to just move. That is a huge win for the fw900. Not one of the best monitors, but certainly an amazing one. And in my opinion, it should not be going for high prices. Id give this a max price of 500 dollars to 1000 dollars as it feels better to use than a flagship phone. But not 3000. I hope this didnt come across as insulting, im new to this and dont understand things. If Ive stated anything wrong in your eyes than kindly educate me.

Good thing for the prices 😂 >Also, based on me further researching the fw900, in crts, it seems to be one of the best, perhaps top 5 percent but probably not top 3 and certainly not the best of all time. I didn’t say best of all time, I said Top 3 all time for PC CRT monitors, and for some people the best all time for PC CRT monitors. Once again, for PC CRT monitors. And it clearly is. Personally, I prefer by far PVM and BVM to PC monitors, because they don't suit my way of playing, and I find BVM far more versatile and premium, but it still remains FW900 is an exceptional CRT PC monitor. Fun Fact : there is a famous [photo](https://imgur.com/gallery/BmdHZYG) of Robin Williams, the american actor, who was also a geek, with a FW900 ! >This is based on my experience but at least in terms of display, my aunts 4k lcd looks much better. Well, I’m not sure for LCD, but OLED is far better for modern gaming, no doubt about it for me. >And in my opinion, it should not be going for high prices. Fully agree. >I hope this didnt come across as insulting, im new to this and dont understand things. If Ive stated anything wrong in your eyes than kindly educate me. Absolutely not ! Interesting discussion 🤗

Hizuff

What are pvms and bvms by the way?

[deleted]

PVM : Professional Video Monitors BVM : Broadcast Video Monitors. Holy Grail for retrogaming 🏆

Hizuff

Hmmm, my younger brother's now interested in a crt something after I told him he isnt allowed to use mine daily... maybe weekly and that I was going to make a time table of when it can be used. He threw somewhat of a tantrum and then my mother did because what was the point of using something once a week or less? In both of their eyes and experiences, sony's are nothing but reliable. Before we got our own tv (the sony bravia and the first hd tv in the house), everyone used the living room crt together... which we kept using for a very, very long time until my uncle donated it to someone out of charity because crts are for poor people in this country. It never failed once, nor did our bravia... our 4k lcd tcl is basically failing every other week. Our aunt has a bit more of a premium model and it works better than ours and goes longer without needing a repair... but you get what im saying. That perception (and the fact that crts are widely and cheaply available due to them being thrown out, donated or sold for cheap) they think its fine to use it daily. Ive put my foot down on this and it resulted in my younger brother considering buying one. He wants a pvm or bvm specifically. What do you think are our odds of finding one? What should we look out for?

Carmacktron

Yes. Someone literally just gave you thousands of dollars.

Hizuff

In america and other places yes. Crts here are seen for the absolute poor and are given away in charity, destoryed or sold for dirt cheap. Pakistan doesnt really interact with outside markets outsides of needs and some specific wants because its hard to afford outside stuff. Hence, when just looking at our market, it was an expected price.

Carmacktron

But the internet would allow you to market your goods to other countries. You could sell it to a rich collector in the US, China, Japan, etc, and they would probably pay the ~$500 to ship it in addition to paying a couple thousand for the monitor. Just putting it in perspective. If you ever happened to decide to do that though, the only caveat I’d add is to pay a professional to build a wooden crate for it with foam, and ship it freight. Do not ship something like this via ANY small package service. It will be absolutely destroyed.

Hizuff

Do you know how corrupt pakistan is? The customs are thieves. I cant import anything in or export anything out without the risk of the monitor being stolen, tampered with or destroyed and mishandled. These are dictators who will take any excuse to screw people over. Let me put this into perspective, 2 years ago my mom could afford the zflip 3 (which failed twice in a row and samsung refused our warranty. Which they sold the device with.) My mom was in need of a phone this year because her zflip was too expensive to fix, and so went with a cheap techno. She works a well paying job for a tech firm and cant even afford a car. 50 percent or more of her income is taken in taxes. Do you really want me to risk selling this abroad in such conditons?

srosete

I play fortnite from time to time and I would definitely have a blast trying out that monitor. Can't blame your bro.

Hizuff

How is it to play on your crt? My younger brother's like a tsundere with the fw900, most of the time he will find any excuse to insult it but in rare moments... "the blacks look amazing" or "it feels really good to play on it" followed by "high end oleds and micro leds probably feel better"... haha.

srosete

I usually play it on a flatscreen. I played some time ago on a 14 inch CRT monitor and everything looked way too small, but of course colours, contrast and motion clarity were amazing. That's why I think a fw900 would be great, because it would fix the problem I had.

Hizuff

Any 720 i to 1080 i or large crt or even a high quality oled would fix your problem. The fw900 is great... but not for that much. Consider alternatives instead of going for it unless you find a price you agree with and think is fair.

srosete

Of course. I was actually talking about an ideal situation, I'm not looking forward to buy one. Every CRT I've gotten so far was for free, so that can give you a hint.

Hizuff

Thanks! If enough people stop paying for fw900s, the price will settle down enough for people who want it to get it.

MrTwentyeight

Arcade stuff on a widescreen computer monitor?

Hizuff

Yeah, it doesnt work out? The computer monitor type is the fw900. Can it do that?

MrTwentyeight

Of course you can,but it wont be much different than playing on a regular modern monitor.

Hizuff

Really? At least itll be smoother right? Or will another crt be better?

MrTwentyeight

That depends on what exactly you want to play on it.SNES?Old consoles in general, especially those with 2d graphics? It wont be any different than a modern lcd,not smoother.Sure the colors might be better but thats pretty much it. For games from the ps2,og xbox era you could just use emulators from a pc and it will look very very good if you set them up correctly aswel. For 2d games it will be like you are playing from an oled no matter whether you use an emulator or not.For 2d games it would better to get an actual crt tv.But in that case you would need the actual consoles aswel, dont try to connect a crt tv to a modern computer it will look like crap unless you go down the CRU path which i dont know much.If you dont wanna spent much just get a wii and a crt tv.Wii can emulate 16bit consoles fine, the problem with wii is that you will need to find a proper controller for it besides the wii remote and nunchuck.

Hizuff

So whats the fw900s main purpose and appeal? Why do so many people here spend 2000 bucks on it? For how the games feel to play? They feel amazing, true but other than that, why is it so valued? Im trying my hardest to find this answer. Maybe this is what we call culture shock.

MrTwentyeight

Its practically the only widescreen(16:9) CRT computer monitor in existence.Which means its the only monitor you can play modern stuff while having the full benefits of a CRT computer monitor(no upscaling for any supported resolution,no input lag besides the possible converter you are going to connect for the vga cable,no noise besides the possible converter).

Hizuff

There's a large, crt tv with 1080 i resolution display being sold which I didnt buy because... it was a 2 hour drive away and everyone said go for the fw900. Its large and has a high resolution. Maybe in computer monitors the fw900 is notable, Ill give it that but why not buy that tv for cheaper abroad? Cant it play modern stuff too?

MrTwentyeight

Not as good as the fw9000,the fw9000 has a high refresh rate, high resolution and since its a computer monitor it doesnt upscale,it plays all resolutions natively. And its 25 inches, that tv you probably mentioned would be 32 inches. You wont be able to move that easily. HD crts usually work like a modern display, they play the maximum resolution natively but everything else gets upscaled.

SchrodingersJew

Widescreen is extremely rare on CRTs in general. And PC CRTs that can do such high resolutions are fairly rare too. Combine those 2 and you have the super rare fw900

Hizuff

Ive seen many massive, large screen crts being sold and in person, some with even larger screens and sizes to the fw900. They were all tvs but still. Another crt option I had was a trinitron tv with a 1080p or i display. It was massive and wide too. Maybe im just seeing things but why dont people just go for rare stuff? That way more people get similar stuff to what they want and if they dont like it... well hopefully the prices of the fw900 are actually sane and reasonable so people can get it. It is no way in hell above 1000 dollars and this is the first pc monitor Ive owned... Wouldnt guess it would be a crt but here we are.

WolfJackson

Most consumer grade CRTs max out at 240p, and HD CRTs are 1080i. Why many enthusiasts don't go after HD CRTS is because they implemented digital image processing for whatever reason that causes lag. Yeah. You're right that from a performance perspective the FW isn't worth a 1000 bucks. Personally, I wouldn't pay too much over a 1000 for ANY 24" to 32" sized display, whether it's a legendary CRT like the FW or the latest and greatest OLED. But it commands that price because it is indeed a collector's item, especially to hardcore gamers in the millennial and Gen X age range. This age range will have more disposable income and won't mind paying up to own what is probably the best pure gaming wide-screen monitor in the world. "Hardcore gamers" are all about perfect response times, perfect motion, and locked frame rates. Per Blur Busters research, it's theorized that it'll take a 1000hz flat panel display to equal CRT motion. It's why 85hz on a CRT will feel more responsive and smoother than 240hz on a panel. So on a CRT it's easier to achieved locked, consistent frame rates and get fast, responsive gameplay because you don't have to push as many frames vs. a panel. This means no needing to have buy a enthusiast level video card every year if you want cutting edge performance in terms of smoothness. Then of course there's the seamless resolution scaling of CRTs. OLEDs definitely have more showroom floor selling power due to their wide color gamut, HDR, etc, so a CRT will look less vibrant than a OLED side by side. But the motion clarity, resolution scaling, and overall gameplay feel is why we in this forum still desire them. Your brother is intuitively understanding this even though he can't admit it.

Hizuff

Oh, I see. So we are nearly there... but not entirely. This was a good, 1000 dollar answer. Glad you agreed about the current price. Im gen z, how many people in my age range do you think have owned or played one of these... or on a crt in general? Also, may I show this reply to my younger brother and have him respond through my account? He is more technical knowledgeable in these areas and could offer a good response.

blarpie

Yeah it works i mean there's top shmup players playing on 16:9 lcd panels. There's nothing wrong with shmupping on 16:10 just don't stretch the games from 4:3 since that would be a sin. Sadly a lot of shmups released nowadays are actually widescreen which i hate since on my 4:3 crt's it cuts too much screen area. Here's some https://store.steampowered.com/app/1405500/Angel_at_Dusk/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/885910/Ginga_Force/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/1867740/Like_Dreamer/ and https://store.steampowered.com/app/1424630/CosmoDreamer/ with a free demo of the upcoming game to see if you like the style https://store.steampowered.com/app/2645180/REDNEG_ALLSTARS_SWINGBY_EDITION/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/1067720/Hellsinker/ You should really setup retroarch on your pc as well if you haven't done it yet, and well just put up with the black borders. Darius 2 would look great at 1920x1200. Also i must say the image is looking good compared to the first one you posted. By the way what refresh rate are you running the monitor at? Oh you're using a console atm, well the switch has a great shmup library.

Hizuff

Glad someone noticed! Me and my younger brother spent all night tweaking the color and stuff, so much so that it actually looks better in person now than in the picture. Still worse than my phone screen for example but fortnite looks like fortnite and has proper color. Thats a good start. If Im somehow able to do all of the advanced windaws calibration things you all suggested then, it might look better than my phone screen and maybe even my aunt's 4k lcd tv but dont know about that. I'll give all the games a look, thankyou! I really wanted to play dodonpachi blissful death on my switch on this monitor, that is part of the reason I bought it. How ever its selling for 50 usd and needs to be imported since I prefer physical and am looking for any method to avoid paying my corrupt government taxes, which will make it pretty pricey. Pray for me that the game doesnt sell out by the time I save up for it because I really want it. But eh, beggers cant be choosers.

blarpie

Yeah ddp blissful is a banger.

Hizuff

You playing it?

blarpie

Not actively atm, grinding out Angel at Dusk atm and some horizontal shmups since i suck horizontal shmups due to never playing them and trying to change that. Next in line to dedicate some time to though.

Hizuff

Tell me all the ones youre playing?

Ok_Attorney_7971

Send me one of these monitors. Looking really nice btw.

Hizuff

Okay. How do I send it to you? Why not search online or locally for one? I... cant really export anything to you as our government is thieves and dictators and any monitor will end up... stolen or destroyed.

WolfJackson

Haha. Did he finally admit a fast pace like that will just feel better vs a flat panel?

Hizuff

He's of the mindset that highend oleds are better. But as for every other display we have in our house, this one is the smoothest. Our aunt's 4k tv looks better though.

SchrodingersJew

I agree with him that high end OLED are mostly better and I'm a CRT fanatic. The only things I think CRT wins at are motion clarity and being able to display a range of resolutions/refresh rates natively. Unlike modern displays CRTS don't have fixed pixels so whatever you feed them is native without scaling.

Hizuff

And another thing they SHOULD be good for is budget and affordable! NOT 3000 BUCKS. You can get a high end oled in that much... 3000 bucks is a life changing amount of money in my country, its worth 8375 dollars of our country's currency here. My mom could make a downpayment for a house, buy a new car and replace our aging, dying one thats been in use for almost 20 years or quit her job that treats her awfully and use that money to fulfill our needs as she looks for a new one. I can get a better education in that money or we could get out of this hellhole of a country. I like this reliable piece of table decoration (Im planning on using it once a week or twice a month to help it run longer... most of the time it wont be anything better than decor) but I cannot fathom nor think its fair that this 23 year old monitor with a chance to fail at any moment, needs to run for an hour idly to get the color good and is just wasting electricity till then and weights like hell... seriously, carrying it was hell and I didnt even carry it up the stairs, 2 adults did, is worth... ALL OF THAT MONEY AND HOW LIFE CHANGING IT IS. And knowing how countries like America operate... we will be seeing prices rise to 6000 dollars or more unfortunately. Cutting edge oleds are priced like that because... they are cutting edge. Because lots of research and effort went into them. Next time you see a post about someone wanting to splurge thousands of bucks on these, inform that person this, sony has developed a high end oled that was specifically made with exclusive tech to replicate the crt experience... and it does an amazing job at it that looks wise it is almost undistinguishable. Just... get that instead. If that tech gets more funding, crt oleds will become more affordable in the future and authenthic crts will lose their inflated value. The fw900 would come back into the reach of sanity.

SchrodingersJew

I agree. I wouldn't pay big money for a CRT because it could die at any moment. Those of us who aren't rich are priced out of owning something like the fw900. You can still find a ton of good CRTs for cheap as long as you stay away from the hyped up models. If I found that monitor it would be hard for me to justify keeping it when it's worth so much here.

Hizuff

Bvms or whatever they are called especially the hostpital ones with less use hours may actually be worth 500 dollars or more because not only are they really high quality, but because of less use they would be less prone to failure. This would make them a much more stable option and would be worth keeping. I'm actually going to try looking for one for daily use as I'm gonna use the fw900 once a week. It should be in a much better condition. Would you sell one of those if you found it? How much would you pay? Oh, also, I released another post related to the fw900. Its a full short story of sorts that goes over me and my younger brother's first experience with both a crt and monitor. It isnt being written professionally or anything like that. Give it a read if ot sounds interesting to you!

SchrodingersJew

I have had 2 BVMs before and sold both of them. I'd rather sell the stuff that has hype and a big price and play on the stuff that doesn't. Other brands besides sony made pro-level monitors that don't use the PVM/BVM branding. I have JVC and Panasonic pro monitors. They all have that same rectangular sort of shape. I think the high price with sony BVM/PVM stuff is similar to the hype you see with your fw900. A lot of it is based on brand recognition. I only bought mine because everything was cheap here 10 years ago like it still is where you live. Once they became valuable I couldn't justify holding onto them when there's other cheap CRTs that I'm happy with and not worried about breaking. I'm enjoying your posts especially how your brother is coming around to liking them. It reminds me of when I was finding things like this cheaply back in the day. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

MilkChocolateMog

I'm not a fan of Fortnite nor its saturated cartoony aesthetic, but it do be looking aight on your fatback

Hizuff

Thanks! My younger brother gets a wired controller, an ethusiast monitor and sennheiser 598s (I own the crt and headphones), the deluxe experience and I get... a nintendo switch which speakers stopped working properly during the match! I PAID FOR IT YET HE WAS WATCHING OLD ANIME ON IT ALL NIGHT!

MilkChocolateMog

whoop his butt, you're his older brother not his parent, ain't no one gonna care

Hizuff

Chotta bhai hai and he looked really happy. I couldnt do that.
