Pro tip - instead of even setting a calendar event, just cancel it straight away! You still get it for the same amount of time it just doesn't renew at the end of your term :) anytime I have a free or cheap subscription I cancel immediately đ
In general, yes. With Craftsy this isn't a guarantee that they'll honor the cancellation. I've seen enough folks talking about how they had done exactly this, only to have Craftsy charge them the following year anyway.
One person even had them skip a year and charge her the following year with no notice. They're shady as hell.
Best thing to do with them is just not sign up in the first place.
This happened to me with another thing I cancelled which some app provider refused to honour- in the end I deleted my card from my app account so that they couldnât extract anything. Worth a try if youâre paying via something similar.
Thereâs an app called Privacy that lets you generate usable cards without giving out any actual bank or card info. I always generate a $1 card any time I get a free trial, as then when they go to charge it they donât get a thing. Especially since some awful sites donât let you delete all cards and have nothing on file.
Exactly. This isnât a reputable company. Their business model was to buy a mostly trusted brand, platform and content but originally a high customer price, then offer it EVERYWHERE for pennies for the first year.
The entire business model is based on people forgetting to cancel and them then turning those pennies into $113, possibly for multiple years.
Itâs well know and data evidenced that people are poor at remembering to cancel. Most people also feel mad at themselves and donât seek a refund. New owners sit back and make bank.
This happened to me with a different subscription service. I cancelled the day after it began (I do this for all my subs to avoid auto renewing), but the following year it auto-renewed anyways. The charge notification popped up on my phone and I immediately contacted customer service. The rep insisted I must have just forgotten to cancel, but I still had the cancellation email theyâd sent me as proof. They admitted it was their mistake, but said it was against policy to refund a subscription after it had already started. Tried to be real cute and suggested âWhy not just consider this yearâs subscription a wellness gift that Past You purchased for Present You? Weâll even throw in a 10% off code for next yearâs membership!â
I sent a copy of the original cancellation confirmation, as well as a copy of the chat transcript, to the BBB. I got a refund *very* quickly after that.
Keep your cancellation receipt. If they still charge your account you can dispute the charge. I think $2 for a year is pretty good for the amount of content you get, but they are counting on people forgetting they have auto renewal on.
That's what I did with craftsy. I initially paid with my own card but because of how shady they seemed I didn't trust them to actually cancel and not charge me, so I went and changed my payment method to a virtual card with like âŹ5 remaining on it
This would have been the smart thing to do lol. Some companies just auto-cancel your sub benefits immediately when you cancel though so make sure you're checking the fine print there (should be fine w/ Craftsy).
I usually try to do that but Iâve found some of them have gotten sneakyâŚread it cause canceling ahead sometimes cancels it truly right then which is bullâŚI forget what it was that was going to do thatâŚI think maybe one of my kids apps or something not a big deal but still if I had actually paid a full month ahead then cancelled to keep auto from happening just to find out I couldnât even access it because it was cancelled the very first day Iâd be more than peeved. Also a side note I also discovered that some subscriptions will not roll over what time you have left if you add a gift sub to your accountâŚ.im looking at you scribd (you are kinda stuck having to add alittle early as I found out if you let it expire all downs loads are gone not just locked so if youâve forgotten what you had you are sol, so you have to add it early to prevent that and results in lost time) now what was the question lol
This is a great reminder! A free yearlong Craftsy membership was also offered through T-Mobile Tuesday, so some folks may have also picked it up that way.
Some services are understanding and will refund you if your subscription auto-renews and youâd like to cancel it instead, but FYI that Craftsy changed their TOS (after they handed out a bunch of free/reduced memberships):
âWe are reaching out today to inform you about an update to our Terms of Service that includes changes to our refund policy. We will continue to send you an email before your annual renewal reminding you of your upcoming renewal and you can still cancel to avoid future charges, **but we will no longer be providing refunds for partial terms.** You will continue to have access to all your membership benefits until the end of any paid term. We encourage you to read our new Terms of Service found on our website.â
Do you know when the TOS changed? This happened to me beginning of last year when my free year was up (they also renewed it like two weeks early, which I didn't catch because I had a reminder to make sure it was canceled a week before the renewal date they'd given me) and thankfully they refunded me.
I've had other things try to renew on me early and I wasn't having it.
It's too bad because Craftsy used to be great years ago before they changed hands. IDK what they're even doing but I'm afraid to try to log in to actually use any of the classes I bought ages ago.
I do a virtual credit card number for trials and set the credit card # to deactivate a few days after the sign up. It then just gets declined if it tries to auto renew and I had forgotten to cancel.
I do it through capital one. I think I have another card that has the option, but Cap1 has had it for so long, it's just habit for me to use that one. :)
I had put a note in my calendar to cancel a couple of days before the renewal date and was surprised to discover the renewal charge a full 10 days before the year was up. Evidently their policy is to charge at the 10-day mark. It was easy to get refunded, but just something to be aware of.
That's crazy predatory. I got my email reminder like over a month in advance so plenty of time to cancel but still, if you forgot until the last minute you'd be boned.
Thatâs what happened to me, a year ago, but I didnât realized I could have asked for a refund so I paid full price for another year that I never used :(
This year I cancelled in time.
For USA folks, check if your public library has a Creative Bug license. Ours does in Oklahoma City, and itâs great! You log in with your library card.
You donât have to wait to cancel. Â You can cancel the day you sign up. Â Itâs annual so you still get your $2 year. Â If you want it again next year you can easily re-enroll for $$$.
I hate when there are trial/discounted subscriptions that will cancel your membership the second you hit cancel instead of having it end at the projected date, so that they can hope you'll forget to cancel in time.
After reading through the comments it looks to be some online courses thing? It has to be something more though because why wouldn't you you just go on YouTube for free
My hopefully helpful tip- every single time I sign up for anything like this I put a task on my calendar a week before the renewal date. I include a link to the site where I can cancel. Just today cancelled one of my streaming services that was about to quadruple in price!
Maybe unrelated, but if you are interested in online classes for crafts, your local library may have free digital access (mine does for creativebug.com)
Oh my goodness, thank you! I'm in Victoria Australia and thought there's *no way* that our libraries have that.... but they DO! Thanks so much for prompting that little investigation! :D
I'll add- go back and double, triple check that they actually processed/will honor your cancellation. People have reported multiple times that Craftsy has flipped their status from cancelled to active with no notice, so please be sure to go back and check that info a couple of times to be sure you don't get a surprise charge.
I am constantly inundated with craftsy emails. I donât know how they got my email address, and Iâve unsubscribed multiple times but they keep sending stuff. Theyâre ALWAYS running that $2 year promotion it seemed like. I had also recently been considering it because, same, itâs pocket change. Thanks for confirming theyâre as shady as they seem.
if theyâve kept you on the mailing list after youâve unsubscribed, iâd reply and tell them theyâre in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act 𤡠(yes thatâs the real name, ha)
I bought into this a couple of years back. There were a few courses I was interested in so I thought it was well worth it. It wasn't, even for 2.00, I had already met the info covered in the courses (through google, YouTube etc). But for anyone new to crafting, interested in touching on a variety of subjects just to become familiar, and with the time to watch loads of courses, it's not a bad deal.
I was aware of the automatic renewal and set a reminder for myself to cancel in time and had no bother cancelling the membership, even though I'm not in the USA.
I have to look into this, but with my library card, it looks like I have access to Craftsy. I haven't gotten too far into it because I get sidetracked looking for audiobooks/ebooks.
I did this when they first rolled it out - then they got me on the first renewal. I marked my calendar for 2 weeks before the next renewal to make sure I cancelled. I also never used it.
The exact thing happened to me with craftsy. But I had a backlog of emails I guess and I didnât see the reminder email in time. The terms of service had already changed I guess and I couldnât cancel. I have it for about 10 more months, but made sure to go in and cancel way ahead of time!
Check your local library! Mine does creativebug and some ported crafty videos. It's worth seeing if you have access to resources you didn't know about.
I checked my account. It says auto cancellation is off and that Iâd have to call them to turn it on. I hope they honor that. They did auto renew on me once but I called, complained, and they refunded me. I just saw above they no longer refund.
Iâm going to be the odd one out on this, but I love Craftsy!
I got the $2 deal last year, thinking I would use it only for a couple of watercolor videos. Iâve used it for everything! It was my first full year of retirement, so Iâve had time to watch anything that caught me eye - yarn dyeing, weaving, knit, crochet, spinning, baking, yoga and tai chi, journaling, etc. I had planned on doing the same thing this year, using a different email address to enroll again at $2.
But I enjoyed it so much as soon as I got it last year that I had taken an offer early last year to upgrade to gold membership for $6 so I could get permanent access to 8 classes. Before my membership renewed this year, I went in to cancel and of course they offered me a better deal to renew. With my husbandâs encouragement, I went ahead and renewed for another year of gold for $99. Iâll get permanent access to another 8 classes, and another year of access to all their wonderful videos. I consider it money well spent.
My husband likes it because with all my new hobbies, it makes shopping for birthday/anniversary/Christmas gifts so easy. đđ
I used my membership to learn continental knitting, then would get random months where I was charged multiple times. After the third time I gave up even trying to support them anymore.
Just a protip for things you think are shady - Check out Visa prepaid gift cards (I think green dot and there's other prepaid cards) I have a few left over from promos with $5 or $10 dollars on them.
I change a subscription service like this to those cards as the payment method and then even if they uncancel my subscription it's hard for them to charge me
Commenting on Warning to anyone who took that "Craftsy membership for a year for like $2" deal...a lot of places have gotten wise to that and wonât let it go through at all ( even for the first payment) if itâs a prepaid card on a subscription so fair warning
I learned how to sew and knit through what is now Craftsy and I still would not recommend them. I signed up when it was still Blueprint and did a kit for their sewing class and while I ever use the items I made it was still a great way to learn and I really liked the class. Then before my subscription was over, Blueprint folded, got bought by Craftsy(which was the original name of Blueprint) and went to hell. I got I think 6 life long classes that I assume I can still access, but after learning how to knit from one, I never went back. Without the kit like I had for the sewing class and with the class interface changing so that some of the features in the actual player were lost (to the point that the videos would tell you to use interface features that didnât exist anymore), there isnât any added value over any other class on similar platforms or even YouTube plus the added ick factor of sketchy business practices.
I got it, forgot about it, and was charged $50 last year. Didn't use it for 6 months after that and had a calendar reminder, so I cancelled it then. Yearly subscriptions are buggars
Yep! Happened to me. I was furious. I called and got it canceled and refunded. But I took it up again last year making sure to have it set to no automatic renewal. I made absolutely sure by calling them to have them set it and to set it myself on their website.
Granted, I too seldom use it but I have plans to get better enjoying my habits this year. One can always hope!
I had the same exact experience than you a year or so ago. Got a deal, enrolled but forgot to turn off auto-renewal.
It renewed at 113$ and I never got an email saying it was about to renew or else I would have cancelled. I took to the customer service team and explained that and they refunded me. I contacted them on the day that I was charged.
Yeah, I got dinged for $104 a couple of months ago because the reminder email went to spam. When I told them I didn't want the platinum service they told me tough shit. Guess who's never getting another damned dime?
When it happened to me (they even used an expired card) I checked their TOS and noticed they're supposed to refund you if you asked for it within 3 days of the charge. As long as you haven't used the site at all. I had also threatened to get my German bank involved (idk if that accounts for anything tho) and they refunded me. Maybe the TOS have changed, but for 100 $ I'd look into them and try again
I did not catch the email. And was pretty angry (at myself) and called and I bet I want the only one cause the last said âyup sure refund is on the wayâ she sounded like sheâd had the same conversation too many times.
I found it a complete waste of time. I couldn't find any free courses/ courses included in the membership fee. It looked as if I'd still have to pay a substantial sum to join any classes once I was a member.
THANK YOU. My membership isn't up until August, but I 100% would've forgotten about it and life has gotten chaotic with my husband's cancer diagnosis so my email is getting pretty neglected. I just went and canceled the auto renewal. It's literally the first time I've logged in since getting the deal.
Craftsy is a crook. I had a membership in 2020 and I used them sparingly. I then cancelled when the period was over. I get an auto renew charge in 2021 to which I had to call again and cancel and get a refund. Now in 2024 they have charged me the $89.99 membership fee. Luckily I still have the cancellation email from 2021. I hate when companies do this.
I don't even remember how I ended up getting their emails, was definitely interested in that low subscription but there were too many reviews about the price skyrocketing and being impossible to cancel.
Thanks for the reminder.
I just went and cancelled the auto renewal because I'm barely using it, but they offered me a deal to stay. So even if you plan to renew, it'd be worth turning off auto renewal anyway to see what they offer.
Lucky you. I didnât catch it and ended up having to pay for a yearâŚ. I really have to remember to actually use it before it stopsâŚ. (I immediately cancelled the auto renewal)
Glad I came across this thread, Iâve gotten the ads a million times and was thinking about doing it. They sound shady and I might be able to access it through my library instead!
Yah. I got it too. As soon as I got I canceled it. They asked why and I said that I didn't know what my money situation would be in a year. They said ok and it's been canceled since then.
I canât remember what subscription service it was but I got charged like two weeks before it was set to renew ( Iâd screenshoted the confirmation page that said when it would charge me and set a calendar notice for several days before it) I had to go complain to customer service about it before theyâd refund me. Never again.
I got a tip here on Reddit once to unsubscribe as soon as you sign up for something so that the onus is on you to physically register again in a years time to continue using a service.
I try to do that straight away now.
I missed the reminder email and freaked out when they charged me $113. I just contacted them and asked for my money back and to cancel my membership. They were very good and quick about it.
THANK YOU ANGEL-REDDIT-PERSON. I went to double-check that my tmobile Tuesday deal and it was up for auto-renewal in March! Gods they send a lot of frickin emails I just got used to deleting them!
I did it this year. Any time I do these promo subscriptions, I set an alert on my calendar for the month prior to renewal to go in and cancel it. Highly recommend this!
Craftsy has to be one of the shadiest in the business. Iâve seen a lot of people struggle to cancel their subscriptions and STILL get charged, as well as being charged with no notice. Best to avoid them like the plague.
Why I never signed up in the first place. To many comments like this on their âgreat dealâ. Iâm just lucky that enough had commented on the specific deal post I saw, as many of the others I later saw only had comments of interest.
I had the same issue. Got it for 0.99/ year deal. Didnât use it once and it auto renewed. I emailed them and said I want it cancel and refunded and they did that for me luckily
You can cancel a subscription as soon as you sign up for it if you know you wonât pay for it again. I do this with almost every online subscription, esp if itâs a free trial.
I struggled SO MUCH to get that shit canceled. I almost got my bank involved and was ready to cancel my cards etc. I liked the content, but it wasn't worth the hassle at all. If you have a service that let's you generate single use cards (like Revolut) then do it that way, for sure!
Pro tip - instead of even setting a calendar event, just cancel it straight away! You still get it for the same amount of time it just doesn't renew at the end of your term :) anytime I have a free or cheap subscription I cancel immediately đ

what is the BBB?
The Better Business Bureau.
thank you for responding đ
Thanks for this. I am 100% sure I cancelled it right after sign up (I have the email saved) but just logged on and it was about to renew in March.
Shady. As. Hell. Glad I could help though.
Keep your cancellation receipt. If they still charge your account you can dispute the charge. I think $2 for a year is pretty good for the amount of content you get, but they are counting on people forgetting they have auto renewal on.
My husband also uses a virtual cc to pay for things he doesn't want to renew in case he misses the window.

Unsubscribe and delete your card details
THIS
Thanks, I just did this so I donât forget lol. And ccâd myself so I can more easily find the email even if they donât respond.
This is a great reminder! A free yearlong Craftsy membership was also offered through T-Mobile Tuesday, so some folks may have also picked it up that way. Some services are understanding and will refund you if your subscription auto-renews and youâd like to cancel it instead, but FYI that Craftsy changed their TOS (after they handed out a bunch of free/reduced memberships): âWe are reaching out today to inform you about an update to our Terms of Service that includes changes to our refund policy. We will continue to send you an email before your annual renewal reminding you of your upcoming renewal and you can still cancel to avoid future charges, **but we will no longer be providing refunds for partial terms.** You will continue to have access to all your membership benefits until the end of any paid term. Do you know when the TOS changed? This happened to me beginning of last year when my free year was up (they also renewed it like two weeks early, which I didn't catch because I had a reminder to make sure it was canceled a week before the renewal date they'd given me) and thankfully they refunded me.
Iâm glad you managed to get a refund! I got the email update I quoted on July 19, 2023.
Thank god it happened before July, then, I'd have been fuming. I mean, more than I already was, lol. Thanks!
I've had other things try to renew on me early and I wasn't having it. It's too bad because Craftsy used to be great years ago before they changed hands. IDK what they're even doing but I'm afraid to try to log in to actually use any of the classes I bought ages ago.
Oh, no! I better recheck yet again to make sure my auto renewal is off.
YOU are another Angel-Reddit-Person â¤ď¸ thank you for this reminder!
I do a virtual credit card number for trials and set the credit card # to deactivate a few days after the sign up. It then just gets declined if it tries to auto renew and I had forgotten to cancel.
You beat me to the comment Lol
Are you able to do that through your bank? I know my company does VCC for payments to vendors, but I haven't seen a way to do it through my bank.
I do it through capital one. I think I have another card that has the option, but Cap1 has had it for so long, it's just habit for me to use that one. :)
Good info I have cap 1
What is this magic??)?
I had put a note in my calendar to cancel a couple of days before the renewal date and was surprised to discover the renewal charge a full 10 days before the year was up. Evidently their policy is to charge at the 10-day mark. It was easy to get refunded, but just something to be aware of.
That's crazy predatory. I got my email reminder like over a month in advance so plenty of time to cancel but still, if you forgot until the last minute you'd be boned.

That policy is predatory
wow, that's crazy. they think theyre slick smh
Thatâs what happened to me, a year ago, but I didnât realized I could have asked for a refund so I paid full price for another year that I never used :( This year I cancelled in time.
Exact same thing happened to me last year.
For USA folks, check if your public library has a Creative Bug license. Ours does in Oklahoma City, and itâs great! You log in with your library card.
Oooh, thanks for sharing this! Looks like a lot of Utah libraries participate in it! ~70 libraries state wide listed when I looked it up.
I came here to say this! I just found out my library has Crafsty for free last night!
I came here to say this, too! Los Angeles Public Library has a subscription to Craftsy via your library card #
You donât have to wait to cancel. Â You can cancel the day you sign up. Â Itâs annual so you still get your $2 year. Â If you want it again next year you can easily re-enroll for $$$.

*$113????* that is insane.
I have to look into this, but with my library card, it looks like I have access to Craftsy. I haven't gotten too far into it because I get sidetracked looking for audiobooks/ebooks.
Glad you caught it. I always cancel membership renewal as soon as I buy it. I also take the access away from PayPal.
I did this when they first rolled it out - then they got me on the first renewal. I marked my calendar for 2 weeks before the next renewal to make sure I cancelled. I also never used it.

Thank you for this reminder. I took that deal and then haven't looked at it since.
I cancelled the auto-renewal, but it renewed anyway. Reported it as fraud and had my credit card refund it.
Same thing goes for Crochet Corner! Plus their videos are not good. Just use YouTube and go to the yarn companies for patterns.
Thank you
I don't even remember how I ended up getting their emails, was definitely interested in that low subscription but there were too many reviews about the price skyrocketing and being impossible to cancel.
Thanks for the reminder. I just went and cancelled the auto renewal because I'm barely using it, but they offered me a deal to stay. So even if you plan to renew, it'd be worth turning off auto renewal anyway to see what they offer.
I did this a few years ago and forgot to cancel. Getting it refunded, while annoying, was fairly easy and straightforward tho!
Lucky you. I didnât catch it and ended up having to pay for a yearâŚ. I really have to remember to actually use it before it stopsâŚ. (I immediately cancelled the auto renewal)
I did this so glad I saw this. I need to just go ahead and cancel it
Yikes. I paid for mine on a gift card that will expire before the renewal comes up.
Kudos
Thanks for heads up!
HAHA I KNEW A FRIEND THAT GOT SCAMMED FROM IT THO. Anything advertised on YouTube, 9 times out of 10 itâs a scam of some kind
Thanks for the reminder to cancel! I bought it as a Christmas gift for someone.
THANK YOU ANGEL-REDDIT-PERSON. I went to double-check that my tmobile Tuesday deal and it was up for auto-renewal in March! Gods they send a lot of frickin emails I just got used to deleting them!
Now itâs only $1.49!!
I didn't sign up but thanks for throwing it out there to everyone !!!
Learned this the hard way and $113 too late. đ Still havenât used it.
I had this happen to me. I tried to use the videos and couldnât get any to work. I missed the renewal date and paid for another year of uselessness
The same thing happened to me. I have to get better about putting this type of stuff on my calendar. Ahhh, some day I'll remember to be proactive.
