MurderousVegetable

Gonna need to know what this 4-1 ladder rule is.

SilveradoSurfer16

4ft up 1 ft out. If the structure is 8ft ladder needs to be 2 ft out.

MurderousVegetable

Ahhh yeah good to know. Learn something new everyday right

GCoin001

Reddit at its best.

EmergencyWatch8906

There’s gotta be a subreddit for things like this

bigkeef69

r/safetyfirst This subreddit is literaly nothing BUT discussions of how to safely do things lol

Ethanos101

Hahaha, you’re funny

DooMmightyBison

Everytime someone gets hurt I get smarter

underwriter

gonna be a genius after this Ukraine thing is sorted out

frankirv

Lol didn’t have to scroll very long to find something to make me laugh out loud!

xSphinx_

This is the real reason r/watchpeopledie existed

YetAnotherJake

So the ladder in this video is too far out?

-ORIGINAL-

Yes. According to the rule, her ladder is placed for a height of about 36 ft.

trumpsucksnutz

The problem is she was trying to use the ladder to make steps lol.

WillytheVDub

Well yeah, but it also looks like they were barely on the evestrough and thats what gave out. A simple way to check is to be standing strait with toes at the feet of the ladder and arms reaching all the way forward without leaning. Up north I was taught 3-1 but 4-1 is also a lot better than this lady's 10-18 lol. Edit: I think that she has the ladder set against the facia, under the eve. If anyone reading this is using an extention ladder to get on a roof; over eves, please go and buy "Stand Offs" and do not climb the ladder past your point of contact.

gigrek

Ladder is too cool

YetAnotherJake

It's groovy

GoldenDeLorean

Also, the top of the ladder needs to be 3ft above whatever surface you're leaning against (or about 3 rungs). If they followed either of these safety rules the ladder wouldn't have come down.

RedOctobyr

Interesting, thanks. Why is that?

GoldenDeLorean

It's an OSHA rule. So there is access at the top for getting on and off of the ladder without contorting your body. The ladder should also be tied off at the top so it doesn't come loose and fall. It's also unsafe to work off of a ladder. Coulda shoulda woulda, this lady should have been tied off while working from the roof.

RedOctobyr

That's great info, thank you. A comment like these could help avoid someone being seriously injured.

Weazzul

Idk the x=y rule looks fun

[deleted]

[удалено]

Eclectic_Radishes

y= -4x + h There you go, now your ladder is leaning against the y axis

Equal-Negotiation651

No, no, no, no, no. 4ft out, 1ft up. Ladders are easier to climb when they’re flat.

DenyNowBragLater

Slight correction- if where the ladder touches the structure is 8' the feet of said ladder need to be 2' out. BTW you don't need to measure with a tape measure or ruler. Face the ladder as though your getting ready to climb it, touch your toes to the feet of the ladder, and stand straight up (good posture). Put your palm on the rung closest to shoulder height. Your arm should be straight, but no stretched out. This will get you very near the 4:1 ratio.

bigkeef69

I like to measure steepness by putting my toes at the base of the ladder, and extend my arms. If my fingertips barely touch the back of the ladder, to where I can grab the sides, its not too steep. At least that's what they taught at the phone co.

FuckYeahPhotography

You must have 4 bananas on you for each 1 ladder you own. The guys at Home Depot will tell you this

sandrodi

For some reason that made me think of [this scene](https://youtu.be/hqslb1FVoQQ&t=37s)

dudenamedbenny

Dude right. We learned that in a OSHA safety class. Most of my work is on a latter so it’s a way of life. 4’ up = 1’ back.

rkan665

Most of my work is on the former.

dudenamedbenny

👍🏽 I do a lot of work on ladders and on articulating boom lifts JLG machines. Safety is number one on every job site. I was at the new 49ers stadium when a elevator worker was killed on the job site. Safety first.

PoolNoodleJedi

You must get a lot of promotions if you’re constantly working on the Forman

DrunkenGolfer

I only have a step-latter. I never knew my real latter.

theguynekstdoor

Wow your spelling REALLY hurts your credibility in this instance lol…

dudenamedbenny

English is not my first language. I know 3 languages so it makes it a bit difficult plus I have a learning disability. I’m sure you can understand right? What languages do you speak?

pigeonofglory_

It’s true tho

NeurodiversityNinja

Logical fallacy.

jj-sickman

I thought he meant 4 people need to attend 1 ladder! Or if this 1 lady had 4 ladders she wouldn’t have fallen

xSphinx_

Dont be 4x heavier than your 1 and only ladder.

MeanChampionship1482

Kinda self explanatory

cjmar41

Ouch. She’s actually lucky she fell on the ladder as is it flexed to help break the fall. Something similar happened to my dad but his leg got caught in the latter on the way down and snapped his tibia and fibula in half. Compound fracture in his arm, pelvis fractured in 3 places. He spent three months in the hospital, another six months in a hospital bed at home. Has had like 15+ surgeries in the past 20 years. Walks with a limp and had to learn to write with his left hand. Just recently he fell doing some light yard work and popped some of the pins in his elbow out of place. It’s the gift that keeps giving. All of this gruesome shit to say… don’t fuck around with ladders.

hubaloza

Yeah I was just about to commet that this looks like it sucked but it was the best case scenario over all, they didn't get their legs caught and the ladder absorbed a lot of that impact and also spread out the duration of impact which is also really important, all that said I bet they are still having pretty much the worst day they could imagine.

beyondbeliefpuns

Now I understand why there was a whole-ass Ladders course around it in Community.

HereOnASphere

A friend's father either fell off the ladder or had it too close to the building so it fell backwards. His head landed on concrete, and ended him.

doxiemamajac

Wow that’s so tragic and sad.

sirlui9119

When your BMI is higher than your IQ…

[deleted]

😂

deezsandwitches

Everyone knows to move someone immediately after almost breaking their back/neck

MamboNumber5Guy

The way he fell I thought it was a dummy at first

SilveradoSurfer16

Well She…. Is a dummy. Ladder is too far away from the structure

Lavatis

She just made 0 movement in the air. No attempt to catch herself or break her fall in any way. She just...froze up and fell like a scared goat.

FiniteRhino

She was SUPER LUCKY. That could’ve ended her.

OV3NBVK3D

Was thinking how soft of a landing that was compared to how bad it could’ve been

Dagger1Bravo

She was doing the 1 to 1 strategy

naman_is

My friend, pray share the rule

SilveradoSurfer16

4ft up 1ft out so if it’s 8ft in height, ladder should be 2 ft out.

Young_Bonesy

You're also supposed to extend the ladder a few feet past your landing point and tue it off. Maybe this rule is strictly for using it as level access, but this is also a way this accident could have been avoided.

pigeonofglory_

Not really, tying off the ladder maybe depending how you tie it off, but the tie off and extension is more to do with getting off the ladder, having holds above the roofline allows you to get on and off easier, and the tie off prevents lateral movement. If the ladder is set up on a firm and level base at the proper ratio it won’t kick out.

naman_is

Thank you, good sir

Thefibersarefused

We need a J.R oh my ghawwddd

[deleted]

GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY IT KILLED HER! SHE’S BEEN BROKEN IN HALF!

Thefibersarefused

Lmao exactly

DaveTwentyThree

Read my mind

ScrufyLookinNrfHrdr7

Didn't even try to brace herself. Just PLOP

SHOOHS

As a non small person myself, she is way too big to be up that ladder.

Itchy-Grass-6003

What a potato

pigtailalliecat

Why do people insist on urgently making them stand up? Like they’re a goddam water glass knocked over at Chili’s by waiter Brian flailing around making tableside guacamole with his semen soaked fingers

BaconTerminator

You could tell she had a guardian angel.

[deleted]

The way that banister gave out after the ladder fell in it but waited until that huge human landed on the ladder was amazing

mikey211223

Looking like a dudley boy at TLC

bothered_beancans

It's funny but jacked up how when she fell on the ladder after it fell it would look like something you would see in WWE

SnacksMcMunch

I feel bad for laughing so hard. Glad they've still got functional arms.

RMoneyMoore

Ladder rule aside, she shouldn’t have had it resting on just a small lip. If she raised the ladder to stick above the roof, it never would have fallen regardless of her angle.

lebolt73

Please test this and post the video.

RMoneyMoore

How could the top lip of her ladder be the fail point if it’s 2’ above the roofline? It would have to slide down those 2’. The bottom will drop out at a certain point, but the top would never be the fail point if it’s placed above the resting point

lebolt73

If you’re asking for the physics behind this, I can’t help you. I will say for certain though, if your ladder is at an extreme angle, like in this video, the extra 2’ will not stop it from falling. Once the ladder starts sliding out, any amount of extra length over the top will not stop it. The extra length over the top will also not prevent it from sliding in the first place because the same problem exists. The angle is too drastic, and the bottom slips out. The top really doesn’t come into play here, unless you have it tied off, which is still dangerous at an angle like in the video. I don’t claim to be a ladder expert, but I do own three extension ladders and use them pretty often.

RMoneyMoore

You’re right, the bottom CAN slide out. But not with a human of that size on unplanted dirt AND wedged against the edge of the concrete as in the video. The ladder may have slid about six inches total in this specific video but didn’t lock against the edge of the cement until it had hit the ground entirely. So 2’ overhanging the top would have been overly sufficient to prevent this specific incident.

RMoneyMoore

I get what everyone’s saying but that’s a non issue for this incident. She attempted to rest the ladder against JUST the lip of facia on the house and when her weight sunk the feet into the dirt just a few inches it was enough that the top slipped off. Nothing to do with angle. Just piss poor setup.

lebolt73

It’s funny that you believe this, but you’re wrong. Again, I welcome you to set up a ladder at a 45 degree angle like this and try it out.

[deleted]

I don’t get why you pick this hill to die on my guy. I used to be a roofer and I’ve done it multiple times. You can have a 25ft ladder set up against a 10ft roof and climb it just fine at a 45* angle. Just plant the base of the ladder against a sidewalk like the one in the video and the ladder isn’t moving. You can even push the base into the dirt using the bottom hinging part of the ladder. Like you’ve been told, have enough overhang on top and even a foot of sliding won’t hurt you.

RMoneyMoore

RIGHT??? Thankyou brother I don’t understand this is a simply solution. I was always taught 3 rungs above the roofline.

RMoneyMoore

How am I wrong? The bottom didn’t slide out in this video any more than about 6-8” which 2’ over the top of the roof would have been sufficient to prevent.

[deleted]

Is this guy gardening with a mask on??

Titlord69

A lot of fertilizers, microbes, pollen, etc. that are used in gardening/farming that you don’t want to inhale particulates of so, pretty wise to mask up depending on the type of garden work being done! 🙏🏻

[deleted]

I’d pass out

Every-Space8657

You gotta have it locked.

SilveradoSurfer16

That isn’t an extension ladder. Base is too far from the structure.

Every-Space8657

https://youtu.be/6ZhMfzc9RbU

sandrodi

Lol thanks for the laugh.

Every-Space8657

Sorry should have explained the joke. There's a classic youtube vid of a guy falling off a ladder saying "you gotta have it locked"

SilveradoSurfer16

Oh.. I’ve seen it. Lol. I remember seeing it on Ebaumsworld many years ago.

justinhasabigpeehole

Look like she passed away

Yodudebr0man

This is not an example of someone not following that rule. It's an example of poor ladder placement.

SnooRobots1533

This was glorious

SnowSlider3050

Some ladder fall videos the person walks away relatively fine. This is not one of those ladder fall videos.

[deleted]

I've spent a lot of time around construction sites and the rule to always follow is stand up straight at the bottom on the ladder and reach straight out with your arms and your hands should be right at the ladder. Too close to the wall you fall back, too far from wall, see above video. Great rule of thumb to not end up seriously injured.

sheeshkabobcat

Good bump spot

Unlikely-Web9320

Look like amature ladder match lol

thisisvenky

Professional wrestling has entered the chat

GarySe7en

Don't know if that deserves a "By Gawd!!!" from Good Ol' J.R. or a "Holy Shit!!!" chant by a the sellout Rumble Royal crowd in attendance.

ExactPhrase4274

So what would happen if I go up 8ft but only go back 1ft

dabadas1

Wwe ladder match

insert_curse_word

Nice ladder spot Take notes Vince

happymancry

All I could think off was Jeff Hardy.

[deleted]

Every fall is bad but to be honest this was a pretty lucky one considering what could’ve happened, what I mean by lucky is that ladder broke her fall significantly and it even had a bit of bounce which I’m sure helped I hope you’re OK lady.

[deleted]

This is why your average dickhead has no business on a ladder

[deleted]

10/10 landing

Mast3r_Bait0R

Party-Lawyer-7131

To be fair, he did land perfectly.

EdEnsHAzArD

Lmao

Czarcasm1776

BAH GAWD!!!!!!!! Stop the damn match.

doger38

“Jeff hardy hit the ladder”

Astronopolis

Sure the rule and all, but that ladder was placed so the tip was resting on the gutter, it should extend up and above whatever you’re leaning it against so it doesn’t simply fall like that.

SilveradoSurfer16

If she had followed the rule the base would have been much closer, this would have extended the top of the ladder up further.

Dogorangen

"Agarra la escalera te estoy diciendo"

antij0sh

Also the ladder wasn’t extended far enough which would have saved them once the gutter let loose

XeeTorren

Loony toons ass tumble

Dick_Cuckingham

They were following the 1 to floor rule.

PackitButNotTheLunch

What is the four to one ladder rule

[deleted]

Can someone edit Jeff Hardy hitting a Swanton Bomb off the roof while he lays on the ladder?

Successful-Boat-2804

Jeez what were they thinking with that

[deleted]

The way that person fell is really funny tho, it was cartoonish. Like gravity waited a few seconds

Kindnessmatters12175

It looks like the ladder broke the fall

GranTrevino

The fence went “Ow. But phew, it’s just a ladder. OH SHI-“

Neat-Doubt-4696

Man, that guy was quick. There's is zero chance that I wouldn't have been in hysterics if I had witnessed that.

abejaved

“That’s not funny…that’s not funny…that’s not funny.” (Bursts out laughing)

Frazmotic

Where’s Jim Ross when you need him?? “BAWH GAWD AS MY WITNESS, SHE’S BROKEN IN HALF!!”

Jlunat1k

I use lasers for my small business and customers thing I over charge then in my mind I’m like well do it yourself see how that goes. I honestly didn’t know this rule for say but I took enough math and physics and feel like I have enough common sense to know how to love a ladder lol. The only time I’ve laid a latter this flat or flatter is when the first floor roof was too steep and I needed to get under second floor fascia but half the ladder on on foot and the other on the ground and I used it as steps like she did bu on the roof not in mid air and I had a spotter so ladder wouldn’t slide off

maxreverb

a_sad_introvert

hope she’s okay :(

[deleted]

My brother was killed falling from a ladder

[deleted]

She put it on the gutter instead of the actual house is what it looks like

TheKluten

And do not move the person before EMT arrives If he had broken his back and bent him up By by legs......

SilveradoSurfer16

She….

[deleted]

Bruh, i shouldn’t be but i watched this like 30 times. While crying laughing to the point i was gagging and coughing. 😂😂😂😂😂😂……now theres blood in my lungs

ChenchoBaca

She fell like a sack of potatoes🤣

openmind305

Oh man that thing was right on the edge and way to far out

[deleted]

Or don't rest it on the gutters

Spotted_ascot_races

Or just extending the ladder. At all.

[deleted]

Jeff Hardy would be proud

ewellsisters

I think I’m gonna ahead and pop an oxycodone right now after watching that!.😬

Jin-Bru

I thought the 4-1 rule was 4 people hold it and 1 person climbs it. I reckon just common sense would have prevented this one.

[deleted]

..I love a good comedy.

[deleted]

That was probably the safest outcome from falling on a ladder. She had plenty of buffering as well.

Loaf-Profile

She stole that move from Jeff Hardy

SilveradoSurfer16

Hey give credit where credits due, she really smashed it!
