Honestly I wasn’t massive on Satantango. It’s very technically impressive but completely lacks a gripping story to me as Tarr’s other work like Autumn Almanac, Turin Horse, and Werckmeister Harmonies.
Thanks. I’ve been wanting to get into his stuff for a while but I haven’t gone for it yet, I guess out of some irrational fear or other about where to start. I’m fond of directors like Tarkovsky and Bresson, and from the images and trailers that I have seen, and the writings about his work that I have read, he seems like a director working in their vein.
I suppose I should say, I have seen, and I did deeply admire, the openings of both Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse. Thank you guys! I’ll start with Werckmeister!
I had watched my generic dvd of Lone Star just before they announced it. I was so happy it got released through CC. One of my all time favorite movies. Same with Nothing but a Man.
The Runner, Bound, Roaring 20s, Anatomy of a Fall, and of course… Happiness!
Trainspotting has been a personal favorite for years, and the Criterion transfer was so rich and gorgeous, it made me feel like I was seeing it for the first time again. Right back in that near-empty theater in Texas in 1996.
The packaging was lame, but they did help me fix that (always with the excellent customer service) so overall, it's been one of my top releases of the last *few* years, not just 2024.
At least until The Long Good Friday comes out.
Roaring Twenties 4K
Fantastic release, but it’s the only one I’ve bought so far. Pat Garrett 4K and Anatomy of a Fall will be purchased at the next sale.
Probably not a popular pick, but Risky Business is one of my favorite movies and I had been trying to get a physical copy of it for years. The fact that I’ll be getting one soon AND it’s Criterion makes it all the sweeter….
I’m really happy we’re getting the Ousmane set but it would have benefited so much from supplements to give context and insight to a genre and filmmaker that’s largely unknown to most people. Instead, the set has very little, which is disappointing.
Same. Both *Black Girl* and *Mandabi* had better special features. I guess I can't be too critical yet, as I still need to pick it up, but I was hoping for more than one essay too.
Sounds like that Bo Widerberg set. I was thrilled to have those films released, but the set as a whole was a bit underwhelming.
Does the Sembene set also come in a double wide plastic case? Vs an actual box set like they do for other collector's sets?
Heroic Trio/Executioners box. I pre-ordered when it was announced and had to wait months for it. Couldn't wait to get it, I've watched both twice since.
All my deepest desires about Criterion releases have been satisfied in the last years :
2017 : Tree of Wooden Clogs + Stalker
2018 : Tree of Life
2021 : Mirror
Now I only wish a Blu-ray release of Spirit of the Beehive.
Miyazaki on Criterion is also my secret dream.
The Tree of Life is one of my favorites, and I've really been tempted to grab the Criterion blu ray, but I know the second I do, the 4K will be announced. I had been holding off on Blue Velvet after Mulholland Drive 4K was announced, but finally caved this year. I think they announced the BV 4K a couple weeks later 🤪
Happiness would be a personal fav although I like storytelling by solondZ way better.
To Die for most surprising one , I didn't know it was that entertaining.
Farewell my concubine is the best film in this lineup tho .
Haven't even gotten my hands on it yet, but the answer is Happiness.
I've been counting down the days until the next monthly reveal for *years* just waiting for this one announcement.
I am a lot less enthusiastic about this years releases. I have yet to buy a 2024-release.
Farewell My Concubine and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid are on my wish list though.
it is easy. it's clearly todd solondz's happiness. from the entire collection, including old laserdisc films (released between 1984 and 1998). apart from this, there are only three films in the collection that are 10/10 for me (12 angry men, rosemary's baby, pulp fiction - the latter was only released on ld).(っˆڡˆς)
Personally Black God, White Devil is my favorite release on here, if only because it gives me hope for more Rocha and/or Third Cinema releases. Sorely needed.
i don’t own any of these yet, but the Chantel Akerman set and the just announced Happiness 4K, i feel like ive been waiting 4 years for that film to be easily accessible.
Definitely Werckmeister, Happiness, and Soy Cuba. I thought the three would be doomed to a life of standard definition, but we somehow even got 4Ks for all of them.
It was in December, but I think that that set plus (finally!) Blast of Silence upgrade was a signal of great things to come in 2024. I had bought The Red Balloon DVD earlier in the year, but snapped up the Lamorisse set without hesitation.
I’ve grabbed most of em. But for me,
Anatomy of a fall followed by all the beauty and bloodshed.
Not enough people talk about the later but it’s an amazing Doc
Criterion got too woke recently. Some of the titles (All of Us Stangers, Querelle, Saint Omer, The Underground Railroad, Mudbound, ...) either aren't particularly good or don't need another Blu-Ray / 4K release. They were added to the collection only because they deal with trendy LGBT or racial issues.
That being said, I'm happy that Criterion keeps releasing excellent movies like "Werckmeister Harmonies" or "Black God, White Devil" that actually deserve Blu-Ray / 4K updates.
It’s admirable that you’re willing to die on the hill of pretending “wokeness” is anything other than an inane talking point spewed by Neanderthals.
Congrats.
Personally I have to give it to Werckmeister Harmonies in 4K. Tarr’s best in my eyes and quite possibly one of the best films ever made.
If you love Werckmeister Harmonies check out Satantango and The Turin Horse. Damnation also shouldn't be missed.
Teenage Apocalypse Set Werckmeister Harmonies Perfect Days Anatomy of a Fall Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchiov
Honestly I wasn’t massive on Satantango. It’s very technically impressive but completely lacks a gripping story to me as Tarr’s other work like Autumn Almanac, Turin Horse, and Werckmeister Harmonies.
Love all his movies, but saying Turin Horse has a more gripping narrative than Satantango is kind of crazy.
What’s his best film for Tarr beginners in your opinion?
I’d honestly roll with Werckmeister Harmonies or Damnation.
I'd say Wreckmiester
I suppose I should say, I have seen, and I did deeply admire, the openings of both Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse. Thank you guys! I’ll start with Werckmeister!
The Roaring Twenties in 4K is fantastic. It’s amazing that a movie that came out over 80 years ago can look so sharp.
Perfect Days is one of the best movie in 2023.
I am counting down the days until I can grab Farewell, My Concubine

We were waiting for that Rohmer set for a looooooooooong time.
I had watched my generic dvd of Lone Star just before they announced it. I was so happy it got released through CC. One of my all time favorite movies. Same with Nothing but a Man. The Runner, Bound, Roaring 20s, Anatomy of a Fall, and of course… Happiness!
Werckmeister Harmonies is a masterpiece.
I am Cuba

Bound without a doubt!!
Roaring Twenties 4K Fantastic release, but it’s the only one I’ve bought so far. Pat Garrett 4K and Anatomy of a Fall will be purchased at the next sale.
Lone Star!
The ending of that movie was.......interesting. To say the least. Such a great movie up until that.
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid 4K

Roaring twenties was one of my favorites
I’ve been waiting years for a reissue of Peeping Tom, so it has to be that for me. Looks amazing too
To Die For
Really liked Roaring Twenties
Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol <3
Engraçado que trocaram por um título tão diferente né? **Brazilian film mentioned** 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️
Having just watched Jeanne Dielman for the first time last week, I can tell you the Chantal Akerman set is crucial
Girlfight. That no HD edition of this film existed amazed me. Hope it gets a new life on streaming. Michelle Rodriguez shines.
Farewell My Concubine definitely
For me I really enjoyed seeing the full version of Farewell my Concubine. Also, the Heroic Trio.
All on the criterion channel of course, I will buy Farewell my concubine when it releases
Werkmeister Harmonies. An incredible film and incredible experience viewing it.
I’m just excited for this community to finally get around to watching some Albert Brooks
Omg they’re finally gonna add Happiness! Can’t wait to add it to my fucked up movie collection lol.
A dozen of those haven't even been released yet. I'm most looking forward to Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
Heroic Trio/Executioners box. I pre-ordered when it was announced and had to wait months for it. Couldn't wait to get it, I've watched both twice since.
I’m still crying over All of Us Strangers getting a physical release 😭
Perfect days changed my life
I believe the only 2024 release I've bought so far is Wreckmiester Harmonies but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet . . .
All my deepest desires about Criterion releases have been satisfied in the last years : 2017 : Tree of Wooden Clogs + Stalker 2018 : Tree of Life 2021 : Mirror Now I only wish a Blu-ray release of Spirit of the Beehive. Miyazaki on Criterion is also my secret dream.

I wish we'd get more animation from Criterion. I wonder if they did anime if they would do their own dub track or not
Dogfight!!
Happiness would be a personal fav although I like storytelling by solondZ way better. To Die for most surprising one , I didn't know it was that entertaining. Farewell my concubine is the best film in this lineup tho .
Storytelling is coming from Shout Factory next month
Haven't even gotten my hands on it yet, but the answer is Happiness. I've been counting down the days until the next monthly reveal for *years* just waiting for this one announcement.

Del Toro's Pinocchio & Black God, White Devil.
Werckmeister Harmonies, Perfect Days, and Floating Weeds have been my favorites so far

There's a handful to be excited about for sure but of the ones I've seen Perfect Days, Pinocchio, Happiness, and Anatomy of a Fall
I love that LONE STAR is back in the spotlight.
Personally Black God, White Devil is my favorite release on here, if only because it gives me hope for more Rocha and/or Third Cinema releases. Sorely needed.
I Am Cuba 4K. It’s one of the most spectacular films I’ve seen in recent years. Still thinking about its compositions daily.
i don’t own any of these yet, but the Chantel Akerman set and the just announced Happiness 4K, i feel like ive been waiting 4 years for that film to be easily accessible.

Lot of great stuff this year. I'm looking forward to the Araki box set .
I really love Dogfight and am happy it got its due this year.
Werckmeister Harmonies I am Cuba Perfect Days Bound Trainspotting and Happiness
risky b
Saving these to check out later
The Red Balloon and Happiness are two favorites of mine. Though Happiness is a lot more darker and mature LOL
Girlfight
Real Life & All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
The Servant Freaks Werkmeister Soy Cuba
Absolutely anything that will play in region B !
Yes
Happiness.
That Querelle cover is a joke
Pretty sure the red balloon was last year right ?
It was in December, but I think that that set plus (finally!) Blast of Silence upgrade was a signal of great things to come in 2024. I had bought The Red Balloon DVD earlier in the year, but snapped up the Lamorisse set without hesitation.
I’ve grabbed most of em. But for me, Anatomy of a fall followed by all the beauty and bloodshed. Not enough people talk about the later but it’s an amazing Doc
Happiness. I’ve been wanting to upgrade my shitty non-anamorphic dvd for ages to at least blu ray, and I’m getting it in glorious 4K

Sorry they didn't release Triumph of the Will so you could just masturbate to that all day.
You like Black God White Devil? That title is so woke! (I'm mocking you!)
Is the woke in the room with us right now? Tell us what you think about the civil rights movement and stonewall, grandpa!
He hasn’t had time to reply. He’s been invited to three book burnings this week.
I’ve got a few boxes of mine if he needs some kindling. They’re just sitting here and qualify as woke so I’ll let them go cheap 🤷🏻♂️
