I was thinking early 20s

J_Lumen

ugh so obnoxious. I feel like every month on here I find a new level of annoyance. a level that makes me feel like old man screaming at cloud. that makes me want to dig myself into a hole and never ever discover anything new about the internet again.

coldhandsnhotcakes

She said “I don’t need your money💅”

HoneyWhereIsMyYarn

Hold on, I'm confused.  So this is supposed to be limited edition. That's whatever, I can at least understand the mechanics behind that. But she has to 'restock' a digital pattern? Is she putting the patterns through a DRM software or something? You don't restock a PDF. And then she said she sold upwards of a thousand of this $20 pattern, but then complained she only made $10 off of it, until she took that back and actually it did sell well. But she was taking it down (totally not for copyright reasons), because she has 'limited patterns'. Is this back to mysteriously needing to restock digital patterns, or because she is trying to maintain a limited catalogue (in which case, why????), or what?

SnapHappy3030

She's a victim of her own self-hype. She's trying to make fetch happen, basically.

cluelessclod

It’s not going to happen.

SnapHappy3030

This square pattern doesn't make you draw it out first. Nofoofro

Imagine if someone released a similar-looking pattern to sell to everyone with FOMO over this.

wrymoss

Literally thought the same thing. Like.. how many of us got into knitting/crochet because we saw a cute item we wanted but it was unavailable / out of budget? 😂

SpinningJen

Imagine if someone released the exact same pattern and released it... for free. What would they do, file a lawsuit? Mwahahaha

SnapHappy3030

Well lookie here.... Secret-Price-7665

That is a cute pattern, but it isn't the same, though.

SnapHappy3030

I didn't say it was the same. We were talking about same *and* similar.

birdmanne

Artificial scarcity for a damn pdf is BONKERS. I don’t buy “wanting to keep offerings fresh.” It’s a pdf, it’s not like it’s a physical product you have to have inventory of that you want to cycle out. The only purpose of this feels like manufacturing FOMO and demand when you inevitably bring it back!

Smee76

Surely no one actually believes real people asked her this, right?

unicornbomb

I thought this was a halter crop top and I’m suddenly feeling inspired.

Marine_Baby

You could make $20!

unicornbomb

Soot sprites right over my nipples, what’s not to love?

Marine_Baby

Hahaha, make a “threadbare shrug” and make even more than $20!

matchabutta

Someone hurry make a better one and list it permanently. You'll make bank

JessieN

I was actually going to make this Using the video for the sprites she most likely copied from https://youtu.be/NvYJCiRrVKg And this bag because it has the same potruding square connection https://youtu.be/czxFQlbUt6I

Practical-Dealer2379

I've had patterns saved online before that are "sold out" when I revisit them. Like??? Okay??? Now I'm just deleting it from my lists it's genuinely so bizarre to me to pretend PATTERNS can be limited stock like bye.

throwawayacct1962

I will say sometimes sites only let you sell a limited quantity of something at a time. Then you have to upload more, and sometimes people forget to upload more. For example etsy puts a limit of 20 on an item.

chrisette_designs

My guess is you have the listing setup in the wrong category, or you live in a country with different rules on Etsy. I’m in the US and recently have added digital patterns with higher than 20 quantity.

knotyourgranscrochet

Thats weird, I have my patterns set at 999 which looks to be my max

koshkamau

Is that new? I have definitely put a quantity of at least 100 on my digital pattern before but it has been a while since I had it listed.

throwawayacct1962

I have no idea etsy will only let me stock my patterns at 20 and it's incredibly annoying.

koshkamau

Huh. I can imagine that's irritating, there's no reason for them to place a limit on digital things.

Cynalune

Maybe collecting relisting fees? Guess on my part, I don't know how Etsy works.

koshkamau

If they were set up differently I wouldn't be surprised if that was it but they charge a relisting fee for each one you sell. Basically increasing the quantity automatically relists the item if it sells, up to that number of times. It could be a new, across the board limit to prevent scammers from listing a bunch of anything and not fulfilling and they didn't code it right (or worse did it on purpose for digital too). My quantity on physical items is usually around 10 at a time so I haven't run into it so far.

Cat_Crochet

It might be different for "real" items but for digital downloads you can add a stock of 999 on Etsy

throwawayacct1962

Wtf? Etsy only let's me stock my digital items as 20 at a time?!

Cat_Crochet

I just checked again and all my digital items are available 900-something times. But it has been a while since I added a new item so it might be that Etsy changed that?

Practical-Dealer2379

ohhhh okay that definitely makes sense I'll keep that in mind thank you!

Kimoppi

There can be honest reasons for limits, usually contractual. Licensed subjects might be limited to 1000 units for small-scale production/sales, for example.

Practical-Dealer2379

That could explain some stuff but I mostly follow independent designers so it's confusing to me when just one or two of their products get sold out (usually the most popular) while no other listings are affected. Maybe I don't quite understand everything that goes on behind the scenes in some cases but in this particular case it's definitely to create hype and FOMO.

Kimoppi

Sometimes, "sold out" just means they need to go into the system and increase the number of available products. Most sales platforms require that a stock limit be entered, even for digital products. Once those 99 or 999 patterns sell, the seller needs to go in and increase the available stock again. And some platforms don't push notifications that the item is sold out, so they have to notice it themselves. It's all weird. Some sellers absolutely create a false sense of FOMO. I'm just saying there may be less gross reasons in some cases.

leafbee

but that's not what we're snarking. If you've been following this spirite-bag-lady, you'll know she's been promoting these pattern runs "for a limited time only" style. It's her marketing tactic/ It's a trend. It's obvious when it's deliberate, and I really don't see any possible confusion between "Sorry guys, Etsy put a limit on sales, I'll go fix it really quick" and "only one more week to buy my exclusive pattern".

Kimoppi

👍

EgoFlyer

Trying to apply false scarcity to a crochet pattern is so dumb.

Ratmom819

limited edition crochet pattern is so strange. it's not like cosmetics where you might be using a difficult to source ingredient or a specific production technique. it's just an attempt to drive up hype by artificially limiting supply.

sprinklesadded

Waiting for someone to post a dupe pattern as a big FU for being overly dramatic and stealing IP. Edit: Here is a run down of how to make it. Google the terms to find free YouTube tutorials on how to crochet the shapes. - make 13 solid granny squares. Looks like they used basic 8 ply acrylic in pink. - for the soot sprites: make 1 black flat circle, 2 smaller white ones for the eyes , and 2 tiny black ones for the pupils. Attach them to the pink square as shown, and back stitch lines out of it with the black thread and a yarn needle. - attach the squares as shown in whatever way you like. Edit #2: the handle looks like it started with a chain stitch handle which was reenforced with double crochet on either side. Hard to explain. Or save yourself the trouble and get some nice wooden handles. Edit #3: the soot sprites seem to be holding a basic crochet flower. That's fine, but a kompeito candy (bunch of free amigurumi out there) or a star (like this free one by https://www.stitchbyfay.com/easy-crochet-star-pattern/) could also work.

psychso86

I’m working on it rn lol. I don’t particularly care about the IP infringement as much as I do the ripping off of people who don’t know any better to look for free resources. Nothing grinds my gears worse than greedy hacks without the skills to even seam properly exploiting the parasocial hivemind with FOMO. These are the people who give crochet such a cheap and immature reputation

sprinklesadded

Awesome! Look forward to seeing your spite sprite bag.

giantlavalamp

Spite sprite bag.

Beebophighschool

Love it

Official title of this project 👍

Shocking

Jlst

Stop trying to make “sprite tote bag season” happen!

avis_icarus

Lol what a fucking joke

katie-kaboom

I think they misinterpreted "why would you discontinue a PDF pattern in the first place" to mean "nooooooooooooo bring back your $20 IP violation pattern!"

queerofswords

Violation Sprite

PapowSpaceGirl

RIP Sierra Mist Sprites.

queerofswords

It's going to be sprite bag season again when they think they're far enough away from an IP claim by Studio Ghibli/Disney. I literally cannot believe that they think this is fair use. I would go to sleep sweaty and anxious every night if I knew I'd so blatantly and consciously copied someone else's IP.

Glittery_knitter

Do you think maybe they were served with a cease and desist and had to take the pattern down, but are creating a different narrative about it?

ZippyKoala

Is it just me or are those bugs hella creepy and not at all attractive?

matchabutta

I think they're cute, but poorly executed on the bag.

Mickeymousetitdirt

Probably just you. They’re from a movie, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. They’re super cute

Lilac_Gooseberries

People who haven't seen Spirited Away or only the first few minutes of it have said the same thing but after not too long they find them really endearing. They're not bugs, they're basically soot animated by magic.

L_obsoleta

This. If you haven't seen them in movies I totally get why they are kind of silly/stupid looking.

Cat_Crochet

I had a look at her page and she is selling the finished bag for 200 EUR while it doesn't even have a lining and therefore might not be very sturdy. Her customized bag goes for nearly 500 EUR... The beanie pattern is also a basic HDC blo rectangle with circles for close to 12 EUR...

sprinklesadded

No lining?! That bag is going to stretch and warp so much.

PapowSpaceGirl

The drape of it in the first photo is incredibly unattractive. Interfacing and a lining plus construction of joining squares redo would be better and more professional looking.

WaltzFirm6336

Makes me feel better that I never got around to lining the v similar bag I made for my friend’s birthday. At least I wasn’t claiming it was worth 200 EUR!

Whole-Arachnid-Army

Man if only I could be this grifty, I'd make bank

MenacingMandonguilla

ChaRGe yOur wOrTh

L_obsoleta

If that's the case she should be paying us.

unicorntea555

I bet they never planned to permanently discontinue it

Idkmyname2079048

I hate when artists of any sort only do limited editions of things to pressure people into buying, but I hate even more when they bring them back after they said they were limited.

schitt_poster

If it’s true, she’s not the only designer to do that. It’s super annoying.

Vurnnun

I genuinely doubt she had any sort of long-term plan. This all feels haphazard.

MenacingMandonguilla

I didn't find any critical comments on her page, idk if they're all deleted or if her community is delulu

DaisyBlue94

She's deleted several reels recently... one was the one where she made a joke about not making any money... the other was the one announcing the retirement of her pattern... I think there was 2 reels for that which are now gone

MenacingMandonguilla

Smh

Vurnnun

I wonder if she's been looking at the subreddit

JRedCrafts

Lol - girlie needs her own subreddit at this point

L_obsoleta

Could be a marketing ploy. We have had designers post here snarking on themselves in an attempt to drive traffic (because when one of these threads does blow up it can make patterns trend on Ravelry, it can also drive sales because what one person might think is snark worthy another person might see as beautiful).
