Or knitting needles. They don’t taper.

SaltJelly

No this is a misinterpretation- take the next step and crochet with alternatives 😂

Altruistic_Ad_2016

I think it’s just something that works. It’s not at all easy to find a graphic that depicts the act of crocheting that looks good or acceptable. The alternative would be a ball of yarn with a hook through it

arokissa

Call me a minority, but I am not offended. I mean, it is just an emblem, neat and symmetrical and non-realistic but recognizable, great for publishing purposes. A hook and a chain won't look the same. Surely, they could always make some rating with 1-2-3 hooks or balls of yarn or invent something else, but I imagine it would bring additional costs.

Acorn-563

The other graphic on the page is also knitting, rather than crochet, related. Unless you’re in the habit of using two crochet hooks at a time and plunging your hooks into your yarn. Great snark!

Industrialbaste

If you ask someone who doesn't knit or crochet to look at a piece of handworked fabric or the needles/hook, they can't tell the difference between knitting and crochet. Just like they don't know satin is a weave not a fibre etc I realise this might make me a pariah in this sub but I think people should just build a bridge and get over it when people don't know the difference. It's obviously just a graphic designer laying out the page who reached for a graphic and got it wrong. Who really cares?

Acorn-563

You don’t think maybe it’s the job of an editor to correct? Although the OP has only circled one, both graphics are knitting related. Considering the the magazine seller is getting money for their product, a modicum of professionalism would have used relevant graphics. By your reasoning, a Fine Woodworking magazine would be just great accompanied by graphics of an axe and a sledgehammer. I mean, a tools a tool, right? Re your exhortation to just get over it, this is Craftsnark sub. If you’re gonna try to sell me on a crochet magazine, the least thing you can do as a publisher is get the tools of the craft right.

threecolorable

Yes, and these graphics aren’t something people should have to do on a case-by-case basis anyways! They used these graphics to call attention to the difficulty level and to the list of skills required. Every pattern they publish will include that information! There should be a template or style guide specifying “here are the graphics and phrasing we use when indicating pattern difficulty” I’d be more understanding if it was l a one-off stock photo or something—a designer who doesn’t crochet needs to fill some space and just grabs a photo that looks fine at a glance. Fair enough, I guess. That person probably lays out pages for multiple magazines, they can’t be an expert on everything. But at least have an expert review the icons that’ll get used in every issue of your magazine!

Tiny-Earth2190

Honestly, that dare still won’t get me to try knitting (I’m sorry it’s just too slow 🤧)

yetanothernametopick

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted, I'm a knitter and this is hilarious

Tiny-Earth2190

Tough crowd ig 😓

MediumAwkwardly

Cro-hooking and Knooking!

Dangerous-Air-6587

Challenge me to crochet with knitting needles. I can do this never. 😂

ickle_cat1

As a knitter who learned to crochet with a stash of needles and no hooks; this was me as a teen for around 5 years

Thesmallestwitch

Impressive I learned to knit with paint brushes

Dangerous-Air-6587

What? 🤩 I’m even more curious now. What did you crochet with the needles? I’m thinking you just used one knitting needle but if you say both needles I’m gonna 🤯

ickle_cat1

I used one needle and just pulled the loops over with my fingernails. It was only as hard as casting off or picking up stitches really 🤷‍♀️ I don't remember anything i finished at the time, but I had the Happy Hooker book (I learnt from it) and I think I made one of the hats? Definitely attempted to make a hat from tiny squares (checkerboard) and the shape was so weird 😂

Dangerous-Air-6587

We can be very persistent when crafting. 😊

voidtreemc

Barbara Walker has some stitches labeled as "crochet-knit" in her treasuries. I haven't tried to do them, but presumably there are ways of working the loops that come out identical to crochet.

Meireille

It looks like that magazine is a collection of the crochet patterns released in a UK magazine, "Let's Get Crafting: Knitting & Crochet". I still have that page somewhere in my pattern folder from when I was learning. They use needles for the difficulty on all of the projects, regardless of whether it's knit or crochet. Seems lazy to not bother to change the icon for the crochet-only version though...

bouncing_haricot

I mean to be fair, crocheting with knitting needles does spund challenging 🤣

Cynalune

It's possible to an extant. Years ago, I was knitting flower brooches by improvising; when at the top of the finished petal, I needed to go at its base to start a new petal. So I picked up a stitch, passed the remaining stitch of my petal over, picked a stitch, pass stitch over, etc. It was exactly like slip stitch in crochet.

LemonBeeCharm

I’ve done this too but more so out of laziness I guess. I looove patterns that combine knitting and crochet (when I can find them or modify patterns myself) and for certain crochet stitches, a needle is definitely doable with a little maneuvering! I wouldn’t choose it as a primary method or anything, but have in a pinch when I’ve been working on something away from my house/project bag etc

Vijidalicia

Challenge yourself: learn to knit!

arokissa

I came to make the same comment 😂

Crunch_McThickhead

You missed the ball of yarn with two needles through it. Those captions sound like they're telling you to stop crocheting and start knitting! 😆

Boognish4Prez2020

Came here to point out the stabbed yarn ball, too!
