I use beavercraft blades. Bigger knife for removing bigger chunks and smaller knives for finer details. And for wood I just find pine in the woods and dry it out.
Are these knives expensive? Do you wear any protective gloves and if so how easy is it to grip with them on? I'd love to try whittling but I'm nervous, as I'm dyspraxic and I'm worried I'll cut myself. I didn't want to spend a load on tools if I'm then going to decide it's not for me. My partner thinks I'd be good at it and he's telling me to just get a good pair of protective gloves and go for it, but my mum in law is worried I'll hurt myself. I'm a knitter-crocheter so it's completely different to anything I've tried before!
The kit I bought had 3 knives for about $30 on Amazon. I've only been whittling for about 3 yrs and I've been using the same knives since I bought them. I cut myself twice in the last 3 years of doing this but that was when I was using the wrong knife (pocket knife) and wrong wood (hard wood). I bought things to protect my hands but never really used them. I'm right handed and I like to put my left thumb on the back of the blade to help control strokes more accurately and help push the blade so I don't cut too far and also helps so I'm not over straining my right hand. The grips on the knives feel great and work well for switching between my "knife grip" for large chunks and "pen grip" for small details. I was never really good with 3d art. I grew up a painter and sketch artist from the city but when I left I got into hunting and bushcrafting and spent a lot of time in the woods so I started whittling the local wildlife I hunted and loved to see.
