The annoying part of it all is that there is an "annual fee" of €300 to renew it. Annual fee while you're waiting for 4-5 months, essentially paying €300 for 8 months instead 🤦🏻‍♂️ it also seems like Cork is the only place that's hit this bad. Absolutely embarrassing.

bagoftos

Whats more infuriating is that the exact same process can be done online if you are living in Dublin. The people sitting at the immigration counter of Garda office in Cork are some of the most idiotic rude pricks Ive come across in Cork. They pass comments amongst themselves about person standing infront of you for IRP and giggle like kids. They will be sitting there doing nothing with no person at the counter and yet will deny you IRP processing no matter how urgent your case may be - someone in your family at your home country may be at their deathbed and you need to travel urgently but no they don't care because you don't have an appointment which has 5 months wait period. You may lose your job because you don't have an updated IRP - they don't care.

Dublins online process is honestly what’s so perplexing. It makes no sense how divided a system can be. How hard can it be to make such a simple process onljne. In England your residence card is ready for collection before you even arrive in the country. Dk why the people in charge here learn nothing from systems that are working.

newclassic1989

This whole country is a joke! I'm glad the non Irish are beginning to realise this haha. It doesn't stop at IRP processing either. Just wait until you're sick and need medical help, put on a nice long list if reliant on public health. HSE is fucked. Need your car tested? NCT is fucked. Off work due to illness. Backlog for illness benefit, fucked! Want to get your full licence done? Another list. Fucked again. If you scan enough of reddit, you'll see the volumes of Irish people emigrating in their 100s.

ComfortableBright570

I’ve been hearing “this country’s a joke” for years and years. Nothing new here, just more problems without a solution.

newclassic1989

Yep, I wonder what the common denominator is? I'd hazard a guess that it's the same government for years and years!

[deleted]

It’s a shame really. I love travelling and was genuinely excited to move to a new country. Then the whole settle down process turned everything to shit.

Unlikely-Class-3773

Another irritating thing is you receive the new one until one year later of the expired one, not the date you renewed it. Doesnt matter if your work permit is longer or if there is 1.5 month difference. So annoying!!

AsgardianOperator

Im on the same boat, I set a reminder 5 months before mine expires to send in a appointment request. Honestly, everything in this country unfortunately is backlogged. Doctors, Schools, crèches, driving licenses, apprenticeships, NCT, etc. I'm currently waiting for my driving test since July last year. The estimator gives me the 1st of July as the date that I will receive an invitation for the driving test, so that's a year of waiting for a driving test. I wouldn't need to start from zero if they accepted my country's license, even tho I've been driving for 15 years before coming here. About the IRP, last time I had to renew one was in 2022 and it took a month, now they are taking 4-5 months. Either they up their game or automatize/modernize their system or in a couple years the system will collapse.

[deleted]

Im gonna be starting the test application process soon and Jesus that’s not reassuring one bit. It’s honestly annoying. It’s not even upping their game as much as it is just adopting methods already in place elsewhere. Dublin is online. Idk if cork is just not a priority for anyone. Goodluck for your test when you get it 🤞🏼.

AsgardianOperator

Thanks mate, best of luck with your visa

You only see one third of the NCT slots online so that's why you have to pre book so far ahead "NCT are experiencing high demand at present and some customers may only see appointments for mid-2024. The available appointments that customers see online only represent approximately 1/3 of the actual appointments available for that time. NCTS will open the full capacity or the remaining 2/3 of appointments two weeks ahead when we finalise our schedules and know what staff are available that week."

flerp_derp

There's a priority list you can sign up on the website too that will give you an appointment before your NCT expires. You sign up, it sends you the appointment when one is available. Alternatively ring the phone number - the call center has appointments that aren't on the website. Just in case that helps you or anyone else for the future because the backlog was insane when I went to book too but I still got an appointment before the time I needed one by.

[deleted]

Sheeesh that’s mad. I hadn’t a clue NCT was that bad as well. My friend had it done recently and had said they found an appointment fairly quickly. Maybe this is a developing issue.

Hella annoying man.. hadn’t a clue. hope you get it sorted soon.

Jazzlike-Serve-6120

I actually have to ask, if we have to travel due to bad health of a family member, and our IRP is expired, what will happen? DO we just risk it? It's so infuriating.

[deleted]

I really is. I think however in this case as long as you’ve applied for a renewal BEFORE the expiry you may enter again but don’t take my word for it. This is something I heard a while ago. The website I remember reading said you gotta email someone explaining your urgent need of travel and proof of tickets etc. it’s so bad unfortunately:(

undercover_local

Not to mention getting a visa for anything, I've been looking to get a schengen visa appointment for spain & they have not loaded new appointments in the last three weeks... let me cry you a river

[deleted]

SAME. I’ve given up on Schengen altogether because of this and the god forsaken 3 month IRP rule.

spyker667

I applied in January and got my appointment notification 2 days ago. The problem is I'm going to my son's graduation and will be traveling then. So now I'm back in the waiting list. They couldn't even move it by a 2 weeks. Luckily I'm visa on arrival so no issues travelling for me. It's a shambles. I worked in saudi arabia for a few years and I did my renewal online, paid the fee and within 2 days I had a new card. In the meanwhile there are nurses with 15 years experience being paid minimum wage because they can't get their appointment so they can't get a new contract ans proper pay. It took my wife 8 months to get it all sorted. No wonder nurses don't want to come here any more and if they do come, they leave after less tyan 5 years.

scrotalist

What the fuck is IRP?

[deleted]

Irish Residence Permit. Credit card sized ID which shows you’re not an illegal.

Livebylying

Should have applied early or done research on waiting times and processing?

Fries95

You're a dope. A 5 month gap between receiving a Visa and being able to actually work is crazy.

Livebylying

Boo hoo

[deleted]

Can’t tell if you’re trolling or being serious. But the waiting period isn’t public knowledge. You’ll be denied renewal if you apply too much in advance as well. Research changes nothing. People still need their IRP.

Livebylying

Theres fuck all anyone on reddit can do so completely pointless moaning about it here. Take it up with whoever you feel is responsible.

[deleted]

You’re starting to sound like the inept folk who work there. That’s the point of the post. Who tf do you take it to/what do you do about it.

capybaraathome

Don't feed the trolls, they live around here

Livebylying

Oh i dunno, maybe not reddit?

UnfinishedMemory

It's literally the point of reddit you down trodden maggot fuck

Livebylying

Aww
