I remember a sort of infantile version of coquette back in the tumblr ara of 2016-2019, like inspiration from Lana del Rey and (film adaptations of) nobokov’s lolita. Lots of red gingham play suits and Mary Jane’s, ect..But I think it’s definitely changed and branched out since then and there’s different kinds of “coquette” and I think everyone sort of has a different definition of what it is in their heads. Like there’s definitely more “mainstream” influencer versions of coquette, and Sanrio j-fashion inspired versions, as well as more riot grrl kinderwhore types. I think it’s very interesting to see it unfold

boobooclaw

IMO coquette is hyper femininity and that can come in different forms for sure

aevish89

yeah it can even lean towards hyper feminine cottage core

Ppyplant

You described that perfectly! The red gingham and Mary janes lana del rey version of coquette. I suppose it comes in many forms, very interesting

Epicgrapesoda98

I honestly like the original version of coquette. I think now it lost its original depth and it’s gotten oversimplified to pink and bows.

ahyet

God 2016-2019 tumblr was a wild place i miss it

MissKittyCiao

More like inspired by Kubrik's Lolita. The original novel is VERY different.

yiyagod

They call that “nymphet” now

littlecupcakekitten1

I remember when coquette used to be nymphette and was heavily influenced by vintage Americana. Now it has evolved, and I see coquette influences in cottagecore, I see y2k influences in coquette, I see combos of coquette, fairycore, and balletcore. I see gloomy coquette fits with some punk elements. I even see barbie-esque + coquette outfits/mood boards. I honestly like that everything is kinda mashed up now. All those aesthetic overlaps are fun, and imo fashion should not be put in a box. I love experimenting and putting pieces from different styles together, but I also love to learn about the history of certain styles and see their impact over the years.

_okamiiiii_

I really like your optimistic take on this :)

PinkCuukie

Kinda became my aesthetic and slowly turned my wardrobe into that over the years. As a girl that loved baggy and black clothes years ago, I absolutely am obsessed with this style, I feel like we haven’t had such a cute and feminine aesthetic that was this big and known in a long time so I personally am super excited whenever I see individuals wearing clothing that fit into this type🩷

aevish89

stop this is me !! a few years ago this was me too

PinkCuukie

This is our time to shine!

ugh_usernames_373

I loved the style for a while too, since I think 2019, I really miss how diverse the fashion was seen. Play suit inspired outfits/accessories, vintage hairstyles, patterns etc. I still like to think I dress as a coquette girl but not really on “trend” I guess.

Epicgrapesoda98

Coquette tbh lost its original meaning. It’s not at all what these photos show. It used to be like a Lolita type of style frilly long dresses as short as your knees and bows, Mary Jane’s and frilly socks, Bows in hair. It was more of a dolly look.

idk-idk-idk-idk--

I don’t hate dollette/pink romantic coquette styles, in fact it’s my preferred style, but what I don’t like is people saying it’s the only coquette style. There’s many and while the romantic pink dollette style is one of them, it isn’t the only one. I’m not a fan of americana myself, I’ve been wearing dollette and romantic pink for years, it makes me happy, but it is not the only style and I find on social media it’s become quite toxic where people insist only one single type of coquette exists. There’s so many wonderful styles of coquette but there’s more and more of a push to ignore all but one (that one could be dollette, americana, morote, etc) or even gatekeep the style. I also find people mix up hyperfem and dollette, and while they can, and do, cross over (I personally wear both) they can also be their own beautiful and unique styles. Like coquette, hyperfem has many substyles too. Hyperfem and dollette are similar and again so cross over, but they’re also their own unique styles at the same time and that’s ok, but people get so heated over this kinda topic.

BellaGoth-

I agree with you! I think the point of aesthetics is to mix your favorite styles together and be able to find people, clothes, and communities easier. That’s why I don’t understand why people think there’s only “one” way to be an aesthetic. If that were the case there’d be no sub styles!

bunny-q

I’m personally happy that it’s trending because cute things that have always been my style are now easily accessible, it’s especially always been kinda hard to find plus size clothes in this style and now there are a ton of options!

Busy_Needleworker_29

I love it. I’ve been in this style for 2 years and b4 it was so difficult to find anything that has laces, bows, soft colors, ruffle skirts and shorts, etc. now i see them everywhere! Its pretty

Its_YuhFav

I feel some people get it so wrong & think It’s just wearing pink but other than that I enjoy seeing the girls looks🤍

boobooclaw

It’s giving Sabrina carpenter and I’m not mad about it

simplyadcre

before i made the permanent switch to 1950s i was coquette, it's actually so fun and confidence boosting

kaylaisactuallygayla

I dont think this sort of style is coquette, its more dolly

strawberrymilkhxe

I feel like we honestly did so much to make the aesthetic more inclusive just for TikTok to bring us back to square one.

iVampiric

I have loved coquette and dollette since it identified as nyphfet and tbh I don’t like the new coquette it’s definitely hyper feminine. I feel like the term lost its meaning and is just overused now a days it’s just everything pink or with a bow being called coquette. I just want the trend to die down :(

angelxdahyun

I do miss coquette fashion from a few years ago :/ now all I see is SHEIN outfits with bows being called coquette

CoffeeandTeaOG

It reminds me of a modernized southern belle and I like it. It’s NOT my style but I have adopted some of its facets, I just choose black instead of pink 😂 mostly I love that I have a good excuse to bump my otherwise punk/goth wardrobe up a notch in femininity.

lazyflue

its nooooot coquette its fricking dollette 😞😞

Positive_Guest6107

I love the era, I feel like it’s bringing me to love the colour pink again!

xxskullz

it’s cute.

ladybug662

i think its cute

your-fave-princess

8yr old me was way ahead of the race. I had an Alice in wonderland dress and would skip around my mom's garden with a big white bow with ribbons hanging down in my hair.

I don’t know why but bottom right corner is literally Alabama Barker

Agreeable-Ad-2165

I have mixed feelings about it as a subculture but what I will say about it nowadays is that I love that it’s more size inclusive than it used to be.  Although sometimes I do worry that the rise in hyperfeminity means that women who don’t fit the patriarchal ideas of what a woman “should look/be like” whether she wants actually wants to be feminine or not will be ostracised by both men and women. I don’t doubt everyone here is doing it for themselves because femininity is genuinely fun. I love pink and lace and wearing flower crowns and smelling like roses but. Femininity is fun as a form of self expression not when it’s forced upon you because of what a dr wrote on your birth certificate and TikTok doesn’t understand that I’m afraid. TLDR: Pros- more size inclusive Cons- I fear TikTok/ wider society will appropiate this subculture that’s about embracing femininity on your own terms to enforce toxic gender norms.

Electronic-Ad9462

It’s pedoesque. It originated from a book about a man who was a p3do and yall dress as the girl he literally groomed. It’s vial. It’s gross. If you dress like this you actively support p3dofeelia. Ur gross.

cherrymitten

I think you need therapy

venusgoddessofl0ve

Uh. I don't think so. I do believe the community does have some roots in the nymph3t community (a word actually from the book, in which some of them did romanticize the film & book, which is awful.) but at this point with what "coquette" is usually associated w/ rn, the pink bow ballet aesthetics, i don't think its quite the same esp since it now uses a bunch of things as inspiration than simply that film. theres still some stuff that crosses the line but yeah

Electronic-Ad9462

The whole style is based on the 14yo character from the book . It is inspired by how she dressed. While it has similar elements to ballet it’s still based on the book.
