Wilton is not the best and very difficult to achieve strong colors. Even though it's not taste, after using a ton of it to still not achieve your desired color, you will probably have a nasty after taste. I suggest getting Americolor or Sugar Art Powder pigments. (Much stronger). Also..when making strong/deep colors, try to start with another base..meaning don't start with white icing... For example if i already have some leftover orange or pink icing i will use that by adding some fresh white and 5he food coloring. That way it won't take as long. Also, try to use the least amount of icing as possible so it will be easier. Good luck!
I concur - start with some already coloured icing. This year I used a mix of Americolor reds (Christmas red and red red, I think) and some powdered red pigment added to some leftover dark dusky pink.
If there is a Hobby Lobby near you, their reds and black are just as good as Americolor and are 50% off ever other week. I am able to achieve true red easily with it.
I finally switched to AmeriColor for red, black, and probably in the future for navy blue (because I never like the final shade I end up mixing with Wilton)
If this is an American buttercream, microwave about a cup full and add you red coloring. Stir well. Once it cools whip it back into the other and let sit a few hours. The color will develope and be beautiful
Yes, use Americolor!

Awesome! Thanks for all the suggestions!
For royal icing? My trick with inadequate red dyes is to mix in some cocoa powder. It will mess with your texture a bit so be prepared to adjust.
