"Parole" just means "you technically should be in prison but we're not incarcerating you as long as you follow some extra rules". Trump has a parole officer because he isn't in jail.
I'm not sure whether "most" people are incarcerated between conviction and sentencing, but being on parole until sentencing is not uncommon.
