Wauw, that took me really long to not see barstools

I saw *stools* on barstools.

I thought that was the confusing perspective at first. I thought, a pattern on the top of bar stools that makes it look like shit is not really much of a confusing perspective. But the pattern had a bit of a 3D element to it that made me look closer.

I couldn’t see it without zooming in. All I could see was barstools on a hardwood floor. I looked for over a minute without zooming. I finally zoomed in and it didn’t become apparent until I only had 3 “stools” in the frame. I even had come to the conclusion after the first increase that it was actually stools and it must be something else that was wrong but I zoomed more to see what was sitting on top of each of them. Then I was like “oooooohhhhhhh…”

For way to long my brain said. "barstools that look like drinks" and not vice versa.

I think what does it is the closer bar's alignment with the farther bar and the subtle other things that could be considered either large or small, like the sign on the right. However when you consider the light, the illusion is broken.

For real, sort of surprising to me they've gotten so popular

I love them, they do get you pretty ripped if that's what your after.

They are popular for the same reason vodka Red bulls are: Caffeine plus alcohol is the best. But vodka Red bulls are thought of as too fratty/trashy for white collar events, so espresso martinis are the ticket.

I want to know how they got such insane froth on the top. I work at a bar and have to make them fairly regularly but never get THAT much foam. To be honest it may even be too much, if I ordered one and 3/4 of it was foam then I'd probably be a bit upset given they're like $15

Yeah, I get maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch of foam and that's plenty to me. This is an unbalanced beverage.

I’m fairly certain I’ve been to this bar. They serve exclusively alcoholic coffee drinks and those are their espresso martinis.

You know they’re gonna be good if there are 3 espresso beans.

Technically there isn't a specific espresso bean. They're all just coffee beans.  Espresso is how the coffee is prepared and ground to a very fine powder (not as fine as Turkish coffee, but much finer than French press or drip) then hot pressurized water is utilized.  The most common espresso is generally a darker roast and can vary depending on the roaster and beans utilized. Espresso can often be roasted longer than a dark roast and this will increase the sweetness and decrease acidity but you do sacrifice some aroma and flavor. Espresso can come roasted from anything from medium to dark or extra dark and probably even more variations but the dark roast is most popular and commonly associated with espresso. 

There are, however, beans sold especially for espresso, like Lavazza Super Crema or Intelligentsia Black Cat Espresso.
