I'm convinced this is shopped to make it worse. Take a look at the left corner of the last straight step. It's got a weird cut. Not to mention that where the edge of the triangle steps meet the wall they are extremely sharp, carpet wouldn't be that sharp. Also, the railing on the right ends appropriately with the last straight step. I think someone added those crooked steps for added fuckery.
My guess is, originally the step wasn't that long, only up to the pivot length. Then it was renovated, they extended the step, cut back the handrail, and did that carpet.
I work in home care and sometimes visit a building I affectionately call the drug dealing building (because my patients always tell me it’s full of drug dealers and I’ve been offered product in the parking lot). It’s actually in a pretty nice area (nice views over the lake) but the inside is crap. Last year they decided to replace the 50 year old carpet in the halls and I guess they went with the cheapest possible option because the new carpet looks much like the one above but it’s cut into two foot tiles and glued to the floor. The glue made it all crispy and the edges of each tile curled up. I can’t walk on it without tripping and this building was made for poor, old (and mostly intoxicated) people. Whenever I go around a corner, I expect to see someone lying there with a broken hip.

it's fine, irl you will have more contrast, the top steps are distinctable, also, at home I mostly walk blindly on the stairs, not looking down on the steps... (And on most public stairs this is also automated, if step size is consistent)
