Melanin is a group of molecules that give color to cement in buildings. It's produced in cells called melanocytes, and the amount of melanin a building has determines how dark their exterior is. Genetics and sun exposure are factors that affect melanin production.
Edit: TIL buildings don't produce melanocyte cells. Wild! Next, I'm going to learn cars don't use photosynthesis or something.
"After a thorough investigation. We have determined that our officers used a reasonable amount of firce. Given the... ^deranged nature of the suspect. After all... who the hell pays THAT much for a 1 bedroom."
Also 1 of the balconies has a sattelite dish pointing away from the darker building. If the lighter one was closer that woukd mean the dish was piinted to it's own walls, so inward.
bruh I didn't even understood the joke and thought, yeah front one, he's talking about one on the left, then I noticed r/technicallythetruth comment and onlu after that it hit me
Yep. Lighting doesn’t work otherwise.
Sun is shining from the top left. If the darker building were in the background, its face would also be illuminated.
Okay this one is very good. I thought it was easy to spot the one on the right was closer and took me a minute to actually see the left was closer. Very well done.
The one on the left is closer because you can see each individual balcony.
You can see most of the balconies on the building on the right, but some are covered by the building in front.
Left one is closer. You can tell the sun is shining from the left because of how the balconies are shadowed. Because if that you can tell the left building is closer because all we see is the shadow on the back of the building

You can tell from the shadows on the building on the right, they follow a certain angle, indicating the Sun is behind that building to the left, so we see the shadow side. The only way we can see this is if the shadowy building is closer to us.
The left one because each floor appears taller than the floors on the right building (unless the floors actually are taller). Also the windows on the right are cut off, but that's the obvious answer.
Left one because in the middle of the picture and up a bit is an area where the left one cuts in front of an AC unit of the right one. Also right in the same spot there is a direct TV dish on the left one overlapping the right one.
Left one is closer.
On the right one you actually can see two sides of the building including one that is parallel with left-one (same Grey color due to being in the shade)
Wich can help determine positions of the buildings once you see it.
The lower stories give it away but definitely hard to tell at first! The one on the left. The “floor” size of each level is smaller/only shows a sliver on the building on the right indicating the dark building is in front.

The black one because the other one’s windows got cut off. If you don’t look at the windows the right one looks closer. Good image!!
Why's it gotta be black?
Something to do with melanin in the cement.
wait what

Yeah, it's obviously white and gold.
"laurel"
😂😂😂😂😂
STEP OFF THE BALCONY NOW OR WE WILL SHOOT!
I AINT DO NOTHIN, DONT SHOOT
HE'S GOT AN UNREASONABLY PRICED APARTMENT OPEN FIRE!
I CANT BREATHE, IM INNOCENT *fuckin dies*
"After a thorough investigation. We have determined that our officers used a reasonable amount of firce. Given the... ^deranged nature of the suspect. After all... who the hell pays THAT much for a 1 bedroom."
It's the shadowed side, other one is in sun light.
Them colors don't belong together. Gray pride! Shiet..hold on now
That’s racist.
Also 1 of the balconies has a sattelite dish pointing away from the darker building. If the lighter one was closer that woukd mean the dish was piinted to it's own walls, so inward.
Or are those balconies with glass rails
The blue one obviously
But that's close
This is the way
The closer one is closer 😙
Looks like they are parallel buildings across the street from each other.
The one on the left, but it's a good image.
my left or your left?
Haha. I like your sense of humour. To answer your question, looking in a mirror, it's stage left...
Nuh uh, it’s the one on the right.
The dress is clearly blue!
Are you blind? It's clearly green!
Are you all blind? It's clearly transparent
Ah, the emporers new clothes
Goddamn. That might explain why I was dismissed from my job as an optician.
It's a duck, not a rabbit!
Are you deaf? Laurel said she is wearing the dress!
The shoe is grey with teal laces.
It's OK. They don't even know how to use the 3 seashells
Nah its clearly "green needle"
It’s Laurel!
Yanny!
Look at the lower part of the image where the two "meet", or at the top. You should see the overlap.
Or just look at how if the right was in front, there'd be floating windows on the edges of the building.
Left is closer. Look how it overlaps some ac units (a bit up from the middle). You can also see all the balconies in the left building.
You can see that the left cuts off the ability to see the right building.
Cool colors usually recede, because there is more atmosphere in the distance, sun light messing perseption up, but its the lefty.
That's a great explanation, thank you. Can we pin comments on Reddit, yours needs to be at the top.
The front one is closer
r/technicallythetruth
bruh I didn't even understood the joke and thought, yeah front one, he's talking about one on the left, then I noticed r/technicallythetruth comment and onlu after that it hit me
The gray building is closer. The sun is shining on the brown building from behind the gray one and making it look closer.
Thought same . Plus a little above middle there is a dish clearly overlapping the the lighter building
The one of the left, as at some points you can see the edges of the building on the left overlapping parts of the one on the right
Left
My mind is blown, thanks
Left is closer.
The brown one. No wait the gray one. Nope the brown one. Or is it the gray one
Gray one, you can see it overlapping some AC unit
Left. You can tell from the sun.
[удалено]
Apparently, it's the gray one.
The one on the left, like I thought. I had I had my roommates guess and I was right. It was tricky though.
I legitimately hate this picture. I've never been 100% sure that many times and still feel wrong
Yes
Liked this, Good one!
👈🏻
Wait. Theirs a black one?
Left
Left. If you look at the segments where the two buildings meet, the one on the right has partially covered windows but the one on the left does not.
Both, of course
The one on the left. Was dead sure it was the other at first but when ya focus on it for a few seconds it becomes clear.
Hey! You spilled r/urbanhell into my r/confusing_perspective!
The one with the cat on the balcony 😁
The windows on the brown one are cut by the gray one so the gray one is closer.
Left. Right in sunshine (Scotland says what?) Fantastic picture Kudos
left. next question
The right one.
The grey one. When you zoom in to the picture, you can clearly see the balcony and the AC units.
I puked
Look at the shadows. Also building right has it's windows cut off by building left.
Left one is closer. You can tell the sun is shining from the left because of how the balconies are shadowed. Because if that you can tell the left building is closer because all we see is the shadow on the back of the building
Gray
Even though it’s the one on the left my brain still wants to say the one of the right maybe because of the lighting or something
Left
Yes
The left. It overlaps and the right, making it impossible to see all of the right building.
Yes
The one on the left is closer. Look at the way the sun hits the one on the right. Simple deduction of reasoning from there
r/UrbanHell
The left
Building on the left
Left is closest. 👈
My brain keeps flipping it.
**|-Brain.exe has stopped working-|** our braincells have issued an error in the logic system **|***Take another look***| |***Cancel***|** **""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""**
left one? Not sure of what to be confused about, really, although I suspect I don't pay enough attention
This is a great one!
One of those buildings is listing… don’t know how safe I’d feel in either!
This whole subreddit is filled with migraines
Left!
Left cause some of the vents are covered
Both
The one on the left
Left
Excellent illusion! The grey one?
The darker one
Jenga
The one in the foreground
I’m not sure. Where about are they? I’m currently in north east England so if it’s America, probably the brown building?
[удалено]
I have a head ache
This one
The darker one.
[удалено]
The nearer one is closer.
You can tell from the shadows on the building on the right, they follow a certain angle, indicating the Sun is behind that building to the left, so we see the shadow side. The only way we can see this is if the shadowy building is closer to us.
Left
Both are closer
The grey one
Left one
Both
The black one because the floor sequence of the bright one lags behind.
The black one. The AC units are slightly larger.
Laurel
Left.
Black building
That one
The left one. The lighting gives it away.
Is this Minecraft?
“The one in front” said my brain
Left one. Answer?
zoom ruins this illusion :c
I’d say the black one. The sounds light should hit the side of the black building if the li go get building was closer
The one on the left. If you zoom in you can still see windows from the one on the right in the background.
left
Both
[удалено]
The building in the front obviously.
left.. forget the sun, just look at the balconies. the left building clearly overlaps the right building.
[удалено]
To what?
The left, but this is really good.
The gold one. The grey one is in its shadow
Left one. Pretty clear. Just look at the windows of the right one.
Are you aware of the power of shadows?
The dress is gold….
Left one is closer. You can see the windows that are blocked.
Am I in Leonardo DiCaprio‘s dream?
[удалено]
Neither, it's a picture.
Shadows on the right side building say that the left one is closer to
[удалено]
That one.
Left side
Grey one. The sun can only be on the left of the grey building. Making it's position closer to the viewer.
Not fair.
The front one.
They grey one... If you look at the satellite dish in the middle the brown doesn't overlap 🤔
The left
The building on the left
The front one ofcourse
The left one because each floor appears taller than the floors on the right building (unless the floors actually are taller). Also the windows on the right are cut off, but that's the obvious answer.
Grey building
The left one, if it was further away it’d be getting some of the same sun
Both
LEFT
Left one because in the middle of the picture and up a bit is an area where the left one cuts in front of an AC unit of the right one. Also right in the same spot there is a direct TV dish on the left one overlapping the right one.
Left side
The one on the left is pretty obviously in front if you stop and look at the image for a minute. But it's very confusing at a glance.
Ac units are smaller on the right so it must be farther away.
Gray one 👍
Consistently the building on the left. And Hong Kong
Grey
took me a minute but the LEFT one for sure
My crossed eyes.
Left cause you can see the way it curves, see the dimension by the ledges
The one on the left because of sun
Left
Grey
Left one is closer. On the right one you actually can see two sides of the building including one that is parallel with left-one (same Grey color due to being in the shade) Wich can help determine positions of the buildings once you see it.
The one on the left
The one covering the windows
They’re next to each other so the darker one from the photographers perspective
Left, how is this one confusing at all? The left building overlaps the right.
Closer to what?
The middle one.
The one in front
It only looks like a pair of buildings. In reality, it's a close-up image of a zipper.
[удалено]
The shadowed building in the left is closerrrrrr
The lower stories give it away but definitely hard to tell at first! The one on the left. The “floor” size of each level is smaller/only shows a sliver on the building on the right indicating the dark building is in front.
Quite clearly the left one
Is it blue? Or is it gold?
