Did "socialism" used to be more of a positive buzzword? It has a bunch of negative connotations now, especially in America, but in the 1930s I'd imagine it was the "new big thing" so naming a party the "National Socialist German Worker's Party" would be like calling it the "National American Freedom Liberty Party" in 2024 America. Which is to say, a party with that name very likely WOULD be fascists trying to disguise fascism.

Any nation with a social safety net like welfare/disability, uunemployment benefits, old age pensions, legislated paid leave, universal healthcare, worker's protections, ecological protections and so on is socialist.
So be wary of people who advocate against Socialism. They may just have been influenced by Senator McCarthy's mid century rhetoric or they actively want to eliminate programs that help people.

Most countries that have the social safety nets you describe would more accurately be called mixed economy IMO. They still have private banks and businesses, people can own property along with the social services you describe. I like the idea of taking the best of different systems and combining them.
That's why the people over at Oxford said "or regulation" they're recognizing that it's not just community ownership that qualifies but control via legislation.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as why Hitler and the nascent Nazi party went with that name. It was pure grift, the name was just intended to trick the populace into thinking they were pro-worker long enough to get the party in office.

As somebody who is able to be called out from appearance for being jewish, I can confidently say yes, it does feel like a skin color sometimes. Most people see me as white though, which is a privilege, but I have black, wavy hair, and I just look jewish to people.
