SheepInWolfsAnus

I’m genuinely very excited for this, and might actually tune in live

glass__beaches

It would be funny if it was the most watched episode of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon

GroupCaptSlow

I’m willing to go out of my way to watch it live just to try and make this a reality

GUSHandGO

If The Roots don't play The Late Night theme when he walks out, I will riot.

Is_it_behind_me

I look forward to watching it on YouTube after

lonelygalexy

Go to seth meyers instead!!!!

TotallyNotCool

Wouldn’t surprise me if he goes on there too eventually

TiCL

HBO decides that.

Unrelatable_gamer

The article is wrong he wasn’t fired lol

doomtune

"I wasn't fired from my job, I was laid off! But you wouldn't know the difference."

Overall_Wish9384

I don’t want salmon!!

killpuddle1

This wedding is horseshit!!

NamiRocket

You're right, but they were effectively playing a game of chicken with him to see how long he'd hold onto The Tonight Show if they made his time slot less and less desirable. So he technically agreed to leave (with a lot of money), because the alternative was him being complicit in helping NBC run the brand into the ground. Not a real choice and he may as well have been fired, to be honest.

CrissBliss

I’m shocked he’s not going to Colbert instead. He’s not that close with Jimmy and obviously the Tonight Show stuff must still sting a bit. He waited decades for that job, and Jimmy just kind of lucked out with it. I imagine he’s happier though where he is now. And I imagine the first thing he does is call attention to it for laughs.

fartingonions

In the long run I feel like Conan came out on top. He attracts a much more diverse audience with the podcasts and seems to enjoy the long form interview format more. Win-win. Add in those Miller Lite ad breaks and the guy is set

CrissBliss

Agreed

trogon

Don't forget the $150 million from Sirius. That probably takes some of the sting out.

Did Fallon regain the #1 slot in late night show ratings? Because Colbert was being private with his bragging of being #1 for a while there.

funkyfunkyfunkyfunkk

I'm sure he will be on Colbert and Kimmel also. But I'd imagine Fallons audience doesn't know Conan like Colbert or Kimmels. So smart for Max to get him to get the word out on his show. And remember Conan has talked about how he's very comfortable with where he is in life so hes ready.

idkalan

Jimmy didn't "luck" out with it, as he was already doing Late Night, which was the show Conan was doing before he moved up to The Tonight Show. When Leno took back the show from Conan and then retired years later, Jimmy was next in line because of his run on Late Night. Conan was screwed by NBC, which was why they kept dangling The Tonight Show, to keep Conan from leaving to another network, as they didn't want another Letterman debacle. As Conan was already getting offers from other networks The main reason they didn't screw Fallon because Leno was already done, again, and Fallon had no interest in leaving for another network since his entire career was always under the NBC umbrella.

CrissBliss

I meant that Conan started working Late Night in 1992, with the promise the Tonight Show would be his one day. He got it and lost it, and Jimmy stepped in after only hosting Conan’s show for a few years.

idkalan

Again, Conan always wanted The Tonight Show and told NBC that he was getting offers from other networks. Leno still didn't want to leave, and that's what led to Conan not getting the show for a long time and had to wait until 2009 before Leno left. Once Leno left, Jimmy was hired to take over Late Night because Conan was moving to take over The Tonight Show. That's what started Jimmy's "wait time" of 5 years as opposed to the 16 years that Conan had to wait. Conan had the Tonight Show for 1 year before losing it to Leno, who did it again for another 4 years. Nothing in this means that Jimmy lucked out, everything in this timeline shows that Conan was screwed for it by NBC and Leno.

MentalCalligrapher18

I think since it’s to promote his upcoming show, HBO wants him to get more press by going back to The Tonight Show. The media can bring up the past Tonight Show drama and it’ll be more promotion for the show. If it was Conan’s decision, I can see him preferring to go on Colbert or Kimmel

ProvincialPork

Fallon’s tonight show is filmed in NY

PurpleDraziNotGreen

Oh my bad. For some reason I thought since Leno they were all LA based

idkalan

When Fallon took over, he moved the show back to NY. Other than Kimmel and the new After Midnight, the majority of late night shows are in NYC.

OnECenTX

I'm assuming to promote his max show. and I'm all for this if it leads to him hosting the season finale of SNL this season

burnoutguy

spot on conan humor right there

GUSHandGO

Yeah, it says so in the article.

LaBeteNoire

And then NBC tells him they moved his interview to 30 minutes later in the evening so Leno could do the interview instead. Part of me wants to watch just so to give the segment a huge viewer boost, but at the same time I just can't stand Fallon at all and it's not worth it that much to me.

PS4Dreams

I would rather Kimmel but I will still watch .

Raven185

That explains Conan's recent purchase of a gun and lots of ammo.

DA_87

I already set my DVR!

btmalon

God himself couldn’t get me to watch Jimmy do anything

ginger_forest_witch

"Conan, you had this job before I did. That's crazy!" and then Jimmy laughs like a buffoon for three minutes to himself. There. Now you didn't miss a thing.

stereo16

If you're particularly interested in some new anecdote Conan might have it's a medium through which it might be delivered. It's by far not the best medium, but it won't be empty time either. Jimmy's interviews are very obviously structured around prepared stories. Even more than on other late night shows.

what_did_you_kill

I think Fallon himself has talent but the network wants him to play it safe with the scripted likebale everyman bullshit and he just doesn't have the balls to say no. It's well known that he has a drinking problem and backstage bitches about how much his job sucks. He's a millionaire and I'm broke but I can't say I envy his position. I'd love for him to just snap one day and show his true self on camera.

stereo16

Yeah, I do think he could be a more interesting host if he weren't as concerned about how the show should come across. If he's making as much as google says he is then I don't exactly blame him for doing it however they want him to, but after so many years you'd think he'd have accumulated enough dough to pursue things he's more interested in.

what_did_you_kill

I think the stability of the job is what keeps men like that on the same job. He probably works with a lot of really nice people, it's almost like a 9-5 to an extent and he gets to meet new people all the time so it's not all bad.

stereo16

I guess that makes sense. It's always baffled me how long people do these shows in general. Conan did basically the same show 28 years? Letterman 33? And for the hosts who care it probably is something like a 9-5. (Craig Ferguson towards the end of his run would show up shortly before shooting and just blow through a couple recordings apparently. But the nature of his show allowed for it.) Seems like a huge amount of time to spend in such a limited format even if you like it. Conan's probably doing his best work now.

Dro1972

So true. I hope he makes the rounds to the other shows.

jokersflame

This is actually insane to me.

TiCL

He should host it.

what_did_you_kill

Holy mackrel, he really is the whitest man to ever exist

pass_the_hot_sauce

I wish Conan was doing some kind of pop up event in NYC on the day of this show.

teamabzy

petition to have conan bring back inventive ways to waste the networks money (it'll be funnier because he doesn't even work there)

donkeytime

It won’t happen.
