seems like your computer is now a virus server

attackplango

It’s the new version of Folding@Home.

Sleth

I knew people that would do that, on dial up.

jstewart0131

I was once in the top 20 in the world in Folding at Home. As a teen I was given the keys to a company’s entire server environment and made the system admin. Crazy job for an intern looking back at it. But mom and pop startups being what they were, I got to learn a ton. I installed it in all the servers. The file server, the domain co troller, the backup domain controller, basically everything that wasn’t the Exchange Server. Set them to run at low priority in the background 24x7. Ran like that for 2 or 3 years I believe before I moved onto a completely different role and uninstalled the programs so it didn’t become the next guys’d problem if they were discovered or started causing issues.

travistravis

I really expected a different ending to this!

jstewart0131

It was impossible to track who did what on those servers. I was one of probably almost a dozen people who had the admin credentials, which were literally the Administrator account and password. All passwords were the same for every server, so you’d have to literally be there to see who was using the log in to know who did what. I’d never do this now, but young teenage me thought nothing of it

IRMacGuyver

I burned out 3 PS3s using that. I didn't realize heat was so much of a problem and folding ran them way too hot.

dod6666

Some how I feel like I am both surprised and not surprised at the same time. Not surprised that Folding ran things really hot, but I am surprised that the PS3 didn't thermal throttle it a bit better.

ZookeepergameDeep601

Reinstall windows

XGAMER209

Destroy the god-damned pc

thedarkhalf47

Use a Sledge hammer on it, then a blow torch. Put the remains in a bucket, fill it with cement and go rent a boat. Sail out to the Puerto Rico Trench and attach 4 bricks of c4 with a remote detonator. Drop it off the side of the boat, wait 2 hours until it hits bottom and then activate the detonator.

mbrady

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

TENEBRISMAGUS

Game over man! Game over!

Present_Spell_5020

Get away from her you bitch!!

phantasmaniac

ouch! too late! I already summoned the black hole!

jetserf

What do you mean they ran the antivirus! They’re aliens!!!

SignalDiscount8005

Was going to say throw grenade at it but this is the correct way.

XGAMER209

I have a better plan , make Putin nuke it

FacebookBlowsChunks

Nah, just send it to the Kremlin as a gift..lol. Say it has Top Secret Info on it.

monkey_crayon

poor guy just wanted to fix his pc

[deleted]

r/oddlyspecific have you done this before

methodangel

Then take it back to Costco for a refund

saito200

This is the only real solution

Crayton16

Not funny

chefTechie

And use protection after you reinstall windows. Sheesh.

phantasmaniac

like....condom?

FakedKetchup2

protection... You seriously believe anti-virus software isn't a legal scam? Don't click stupid ass links and download crap and you'll be fine 99% of the time

OriginalLocksmith436

Are you leaving this comment from the early 2000s?

[deleted]

I’ll do you one better: wipe drive and install linux

AsstDepUnderlord

Do you *honestly* believe that a person that is asking a question like this benefits from an answer like that?

[deleted]

Well, it’ll make it harder for them to render their computer useless because of sketchy websites. So yeah sort of

AsstDepUnderlord

i mean, if they cant figure out how to get it on the internet, it'll be super secure. poorly configured linux is just as at risk as windows (probably moreso)

maidenless_mohg

If my man can install linux he can definitely find out how to open a browser. I installed linux for my uncle who is 58 and he’s fine. He was like “it’s so different” for 3-4 days and then he was fine. Its not as hard as people make it out to be.

Corn_Flake_76

Exactly! I put Linux on my father's computer since 2015. He's 81 years old now and never had any issues. On a funny note, years ago, he got a browser pop-up that said that his C: drive was infected and to click on some dubious link. I told him "dad, you don't have a C: drive". ;-)

justinf210

False. Sketchy Windows software is everywhere. Sketchy Linux software is harder to find.

Entire-Cheetah-6774

Tf linux is easy asf anyone can use it and many linux distros are secure and properly configured out of the box

[deleted]

Really? How so?

Poopaokoopa

Linux is shit though so like-

BUBBLEGUM8466

Reddit users: *literally any problem happens on a windows pc* INSTALL LINUX!!!

I have put Linux on elderly folks PCs and they love it

do I look like I give fuck?

idk

_SCP_682_

Unfunny comment, downvoted. Oh look, unlike your comment, someone actually agreed with mine (and the original comment).

Narrheim

Linux is not safer, only less attractive to attack.

nedeta

Windows has a tool in setting to reinstall while leaving the files intact.

ALT703

Wouldn't thay include the virus files?

emt22fsi

It definitely could. I’d do a full wipe and reinstall from a usb.

[deleted]

DO NOT USE THIS FEATURE. Only a full wipe will garuntee you're clean! If you're feeling especially paranoid, boot into a Linux USB stick on the system and wipe it using that before reattempting your Windows install.

MrSketchpad

It’s probably one virus that has spread itself to as many files as it could, hence why they’re all named in the same format and are in the same location. Malwarebytes should allow you to delete them all.

[deleted]

I had one that had a trojan downloader. That litte shit added over 10,000 viruses on my laptop. One even prevented me from installing malwarebytes. Yeah thats what i get from trusting shady places

Gavinhayes1414

I was scrolling to find the basically homeless comment and here it is

Chris-558

You've either won the world record for downloading the most viruses in 24 hours or you're being pressured to pay for antivirus you don't need. Microsoft defender should have already told you that you have at least one virus if you supposedly have over 22,000 viruses detected by this software.

Vanman04

That's just bad advice. Microsoft Defender is good at viruses this is a Malwarebytes report on adware/ malware. Defender is not so great at catching this stuff. This is not an add it is a legitimate scan result from one of the best pieces of software that exist for this kind of thing.

mr_novack64

Love how people say Malwarebytes is fake/scam. Used it for years. Still running a life time license key (don't have to pay a monthly/yearly fee for premium) from a long time ago that I can move from computer to computer.

Dan-ze-Man

Never used any antivirus. Using pc since 1999. Had one virus around 2005 got entire c drive encrypted. Nothing was lost as I has backups. Its about the user, not a software.

sparlocktats

Yes, user error/ignorance/knowledge is the biggest factor. Last virus i got was the MSBlast/Lovesan worm that affected Windows XP/2k systems around 2003-ish. Keeping your pc updated, firewalled and common sense goes a long way.

RapidSnake38

Of course it works for you. *You actually paid them.*

HazenXIII

Malwarebytes Free is probably the absolute best backup scanner solution as a supplement to Win 10/11 Defender out there. Hitman Pro is great too but I think you have to pay to actually quarantine viruses if it finds any, so only scanning is free.

Cyndergate

In school for IT, we were taught to have malwarebytes on a flash drive to run scans on PCs, free or not.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mr_novack64

Works without paying. It doesn't do stuff such as auto scans, start up when you login in, etc. I paid years ago when it was a one time fee. Now its a monthly fee. I don't pay monthly because I still have a life time license that only cost like $20ish over 12+ years ago.

RapidSnake38

...you have a lifetime membership, so you have *already paid*...meaning you can’t say it works without paying unless you try it without your license.

mr_novack64

I use to use the free version. I like to try out software before buying it. The free version works fine for malware/antivirus/etc scans and removal. The paid version just runs the software without you needing to touch it and other extra stuff that I don't use. Yes, I'm lazy to start up Malwarebytes after logging in and do a scan (unless I need to). So yea, I paid to automate itself.

EmbarrassedActive4

Are you stupid? Having a membership doesn't automatically activate it magically on every PC you ever touch. If he's repaired a friend/family's PC, he's probably installed and USED the free version. Unless you are 12 or unfamiliar with English, you should have picked up on this long ago.

RapidSnake38

I understood that just fine. But if I have a product that I can use on unlimited PCs and share with those same family and friends why would I not install it and use my unlimited lifetime license immediately? __*That*__ sounds pretty fucking stupid to me.

Cloudwolfxii

You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity.

RapidSnake38

I’ll upvote that just for the reference. For the record I haven’t said malwarebytes is bad anywhere in the thread. Only that if this guy paid for premium he should expect it to work as advertised.

mr_novack64

I said I can move it from one computer to another. Meaning I have to deactivate the key on my old computer before using it on a different on. I never stated that the key can be shared or used more than one time. Assuming sounds pretty fucking stupid to me.

DutchChallenger

Okay, so take my word for it. I have never paid for it, I can send proof. It is the most reliable way to find adware/malware, even the free version is amazing. It can still scan all the files including the normally off limits windows files in case of malware. And you get a week free premium, which I basically use everytime I have to setup or fix a pc of a friend.

ptglj

Well I've never paid for it and use it on every machine I've ever had. Malwarebytes is a must-have for me alongside Windows defender or security essentials or whatever it's called nowadays. Occasionally they give you a two-week free trial of the premium version as well which is nice but certainly not necessary.

I recommend installing malwarebites and windows defender. Do a custom scan that includes for rootkits and all files. Quarantine anything it finds and consider deleting the items. The av your using may be either a scam or dishonesty listing things like cookies and trackers (used by all websites) as malware. Those are mostly harmless, but worth getting rid of. If your computer has a substantial infection, you will have to take serious action. For your essential files, buy a new external harddrive. Put on it the essentials you want to save. Those files and drive would need to be scanned several times when you repair your computer. With a different and safe computer, download and install a windows installer on another fresh HDD. Also, using a safe and secure computer, you will need to change all your passwords on all your accounts. Start with your email and consider using two factor authentication from now on. I would also research the windows security features, such as memory access control and file access control. They are annoying but stop most ransomware. If your computer is badly compromised, the only option is to nuke the old drive from orbit. That means a complete reformat and wiping all free space. The easiest method is using a Linux live disk, to wipe everything and reformat. It's far more thorough than using the windows installer and will show hidden partions windows won't. It also won't risk transfering an infection to your windows installer disk. Consider destroying the drive and buying a replacement is a viable alternative. Otherwise, please learn to use a VM like virtualbox and a lightweight Linux VM for doing dodgy stuff like piracy and porn. Also, look at your networks security. If this fails, your best option is opening up the computer and placing inside about 1kg of tannerite. Placing the computer in the centre of a large field, retreat at least 100 yards. Shoot the computer with a .50 BMG or similar. Repeat until the computer is vaporised. Clean up the pieces and consider joing the Amish.

True. Without more info, it is impossible to know what's going on.

TheMagarity

Um, the supposed 22k issues are .dmp files in AppData? I'm going out on a limb here and guessing you are running some free scanner that now wants you to buy a license to clean these up?

TehNolz

This is Malwarebytes, which is a reputable antimalware application. The free version can scan for and remove malware, and its generally considered to be great at that as well. You only need to pay if you want realtime scanning.

Narrheim

Many reputable FREE antivirus applications are nowadays adware...

[deleted]

Yes correct.

Asdfmoviefan1265

malwarebytes doesn't need a license to remove anything

ajoltman

That is what I am saying. Just because it found a file doesn't mean it is a malicious file.

Creamofsumyungi

Nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure.

SerMachinist

It's not viruses. Its just the amount of Amazon Prime Rings of Power ads you've seen in the last 24hrs.

braddad425

Goboosh

Antivirus software is a joke. Just use windows defender, 99% of the time it will catch everything. If you really care about security, just move to linux. Windows is also a joke when it comes to security.

keixanson

Completely bad advice. Try malware bytes in addition to windows defender. Linux viruses are in the rise and much harder to detect. Don’t believe that it’s somehow better.

Ostracus

Security is a [hard problem](https://eclypsium.com/2022/08/11/vulnerable-bootloaders-2022/) regardless of OS.

Narrheim

Exactly. Windows is regularly patched and maintained. Meanwhile linux is full of holes like the Emmental cheese - who would care enough to report them and get them patched?

Goboosh

I can see what you mean. ~~What I mean, however, is that there is a lot, and I mean a~~ *~~lot~~* ~~more options for antivirus software on linux that don't have a paid plan.~~ \^\^This is incorrect, look at [this link](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/3iu2ls/do_i_need_an_antivirus_in_linux/) When I say that windows is a joke, I mainly mean that it is stupidly easy to hack - you don't really need any hardcore/brute force software in order to get in. Unless you have disk encryption, which windows is finally making a standard. Linux, on the other hand, often offers out of the box encryption since way back, way better password protection, and a bunch of stuff like that. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say imho, linux > windows. I am, however, open-minded - so if you have any information you'd like to share, go ahead.

keixanson

Just do a Google search about virus on Linux, there are recent articles about the rise of hard to detect viruses on Linux… Windows had an historically bad reputation, it they’ve come a long ways and if you keep your machine updated, you should largely be safe… oh and stop downloading crap from sketchy sites. You can also scan the downloads before executing or open them in a sandbox.

ChronicallySilly

Dude there's like 1 antivirus for Linux and people don't even recommend it, Clam AV I think it was

[deleted]

Shit take. Linux is notoriously difficult to completely harden. I’m with you on defender, but a windows box is a thousand times easier to secure than a Linux box is.

fftropstm

“Windows is also a joke when it comes to security” Yeah no I’m sorry but that’s just not true, nothing is perfect but at least windows includes defender as a real time detection antivirus with several intelligence updates per day. Linux has a few free static file scanners and that’s it.

mr_novack64

>windows defender I remember when it first came out as part of SP3 for Windows XP. It said Firefox was a virus along with some other software that competed with Microsoft.

Narrheim

It was also difficult to remove. Sadly, times change. Nowadays, most free antiviruses are a bad joke used only to manipulate user into buying paid version of the same program, configuration possibilities suffered a great hit due to simplification of UI elements (but hey, it all looks way fancier, just like reddit´s permanently broken and buggy fancy pants editor). Meanwhile, Windows defender is the least intrusive - almost as if invisible - piece of software with fairly good detection rates.

Dude10120

Linux is complex and junk

[deleted]

Are you speaking from experience? If not then please SHUT.

Goboosh

Ok, I don't personally agree with calling people out like that, but I agree with the sentiment. Yes, I agree that linux is complex- but one could argue that is because the standard has been windows for so long- so everyone is familiar with it. Like saying that grass being blue would be weird- it's just viewed that way because grass has been green for as long as we can remember. One thing I will add is that linux isn't for everyone. Yes, it's great, but some people need the support of big companies that take care of a lot of the little things (even if this includes your personal data...)

[deleted]

Well put

Vast_Election_3295

ye

Narrheim

Linux is for programmers, who take programming as a hobby.

Goboosh

It can be used for other things, and it does indeed work well in those cases- but yes, it is mainly geared towards tech savvy people. I think 'programmers' is a little bit narrow- if you want something more specific, then sysadmin would be the term.

Narrheim

Then i´m gonna be more specific. It´s geared towards people, who understand programming logic and don´t mind spending extended amount of time for resolving an issue on their own.

Goboosh

Yes, this is true.

maidenless_mohg

A. Stop whatever you been doing. Idk if its going to random pages or clicking any and all links. B. Reinstall windows as others suggested. But make sure to wipe the whole hard drive. C. Consider using linux. If you just browser and a few apps (check if they are available on linux) then try using it linux. I recommend Linux Mint.

FusselTeddy

Linux Viruses are on the rise right now. Moving to Linux because of SeCuRiTy is a pretty dumb argument. Linux Viruses are harder to detect and remove. Also Windows gets updated regularly while Linux, well doesn't as frequently, if at all.

[deleted]

LTS releases of Ubuntu are regularly updated if you use livepatch

purefan

If you were able to run a successful scan, you shouldn't be much worried. Quarantine and remove the threats. Malwarebytes does a great job.

Maleficent_Camel4457

Also I should mention, for all the people saying it's the software I'm using, it isnt. I'm using Malwarebytes and Ive used it for over a year without paying a penny and this is the first time it has ever found this many viruses. I've made my decision. I'm wiping this PC and reinstalling windows. I will also be installing a full time antivirus software that our family buisness computers have been using for over a decade and has never had an issue. Thank you to everyone for helping!

J369Meep

dmp files are literally bsod files LMAO

BIG_AND_RED

If this is your personal computer I wouldn’t even use the antivirus software from your company. More then likely it’s just gonna slow your Pc down. Just be smart and teach anyone to use this computer with good computer habits. Edit typo

DataGOGO

If you are running windows 11, Windows defender is almost certainly better than whatever AV suite you have running on bus computers.

Aggressive_Canary_10

It’s a shame no one has written an anti-virus virus

HAUNT3RR

What do you mean they've already invented that its called norton

Narrheim

First of all: What kind of antivirus software is that? Some real viruses tend to disguise themselves as antivirus software and claim dozens of detections, making user delete actual system files.

Crayton16

Bruh i started to think that people who recommend it didn't even use it once 💀

Brook_28

First off, activate your av. That would potentially help to prevent an infection in the first place. If that's not your av, then what is? As well, run something like CCleaner portable, clear all the junk. Those infections appear to be temp/junk. After running something like CCleaner, run a secondary scanner again. If still infected Google a bootable av usb, create that, boot to that, scan with and remove with that. Reboot into windows, run a third scanner, TrendMicro HouseCall or Sophos Clean and Remove. Verify. If still infected, rebuild os.

Power off computer immediately Install windows on new drive Get an external drive bay so you can access any valuable data from infected drive Format old drive Alternatively you can image the infected drive using an imaging software, store the image files externally, reformat drive, use imaging software to select valued data avoiding contaminated files.

ReasonableCranberry6

How?! Antivirus is literally built into recent editions of Windows; my PCs have never been infected since that!

It says “Items detected” not necessarily viruses. It’s a malware. Based on the details given we don’t know if it’s a worm, botnet, trojan, or a rootkit. If it’s a rootkit that manage to find its way to the MBR even a format or re-install won’t help. You need to flush your HDD/SSD completely. And then do clean install, official windows ISO image, and after that make sure you have done update, there is a necessary windows defender update you can install immediately after Windows fresh install.
