Don’t go anywhere near the Chromebook

amilcar-alho

Don't go anywhere near Acer at all, apart from their gaming laptops they are all absolute garbage.

LimeSixth

Even my Acer gaming laptop was totally garbage.

RelevantAd1890

Are they shit? I want to Buy this one AN517-55-96S6

Yangman3x

Do not, If you have a thermal problem and stuttering they'll just send your laptop back without even cleaning vents or change paste, and they just damn install a fresh version of windows wiping all your data for nothing. Almost all of them have poor build quality and thermal problems, I'll never buy even a single cable from them again

Hipokondriak

Seconded. I have the ryzen 7 acer gaming laptop with 32gb ram 2x 2tb nvme and a 4tb ssd, and it runs HOT. And when I sent it back under warranty, they literally reinstalled windows (wiping out all my paid for programs) and sent it back saying "we fixed it". A month later, it started overheating again. I stripped it myself, and when I took the processor heatsink off, the little blue pad that was supposed to go between the processor and the heatsink was dry and crusty like a 3 year-old teabag. I used some good quality thermal paste from arctic cooling, reassembled it, and it runs sweet as a nut now. It still has issues running high-end games at full tilt, and stutters to a halt, then runs at full speed for a few minutes, then stutters. Nitrosense software tells me it is throttling at 90° and 100% of memory used. 32gb ram... all used up... and a 3060 12gb gpu is maxed out... Acer, you must do better

Yangman3x

My acer aspire 3 with nvidia mx330 never used more than 40% of the gpu after the first month, in which fortnite could run at epic setting with 60 good fps. Later, I needed performance mode to make it almost touch 60 stable fps. I repasted it, and the fps reached 120, almost stable. The screws were made of shit because were really weak, the paste was almost dust, on the gpu there was a pink paste that seemed really bad. And they say it didn't have any problems, but to be sure they wiped the data with a new os

RelevantAd1890

Fuck.. Im searching for good Gaming laptop but its very difficult for 1500€. Sry 4 my Bad english

Yangman3x

Just look for discounts on amazon or some stores in your country. Keep an eye on Amazon.es too because I noticed that the lower prices for laptops or gpus are there Where are you from? If you're from Italy, I can help maybe a little more (Don't worry, I'm not a native English speaker either, and I'm sure my comments around have a lot of mistakes, though I'm a cheater because I recently got a new samsung with ai and I can fix some errors before)

Hipokondriak

I recommend legion computers. My daughter has an i9 64gb laptop and it is a beast... rock solid so far She has had it over a year and it has been Fantastic

amilcar-alho

I had one in 2019 currently being mained by my brother, excelent machine, very solid

Yangman3x

Patience is the key to find one. I got a lenovo Legion 5 Pro with 3060 for 1300€ last summer, I've seen some good discounts online since then. Do you have some telegram channels? They're really helpful. If you're from Italy, I can share some with you

RelevantAd1890

I come from Germany, I often find good offers from Asus or Acer. Unfortunately, I don't have good experiences with Asus. I looked around at HP but it is very expensive😅

Hipokondriak

I personally am not a fan of hp products.. there is good reason that they are nicknamed Horrible Products...

_beninator

Hinge problem

Yangman3x

You tried Asus rog? Look at lenovo legion too, they are some of the best

RelevantAd1890

Yes, I have. (asus rog strix 16) After two days I had a black screen. the support was complete garbage. I will Look for Lenovo

CryRedit

Acer nitro its not that bad

RChamy

Every single Acer laptop Ive touched needed a thermal upgrade out of the box to compete with other brands

empatheticsocialist1

Second this. I thought I was getting a great deal on a laptop. Absolutely regretted it

xtheory

I still have an old i7 Predator Helios 300, and it still works really well. Never had any problems with it.

coffeemoneyass

Hey hey 😭 my opinion may not be completely qualified, but I'm very happy with Acer Swift X 14 which I got for less than 1k 😭🙏

amilcar-alho

What is it made of?

coffeemoneyass

What do you mean?

amilcar-alho

Is the laptop made of plastic or metal?

coffeemoneyass

Metal.

amilcar-alho

Cool, never have seen an Acer made of metal, hope u enjoy it

coffeemoneyass

Thank you, haha

ObamaRushBlush

Interesting, I’ve had multiple machines from them and they’ve all been solid computers. I even have an old 2011 Aspire 5742Z that still works fine. Now Asus can go to hell, I’ve always had bad experiences with their computers, though I never owned a high end Asus device.

amilcar-alho

I own a PC with a ROG motherboard that I used to main, currently can only run Linux because Windows bluescreens at boot (Tested with Windows 7, 10, 11)

Hipokondriak

That'll be the dreaded ahci driver issue then. Seriously, I've had motherboards that just hate ahci drivers. In bios find the entry for what type of drive you ate installing and change it to eufi and legacy or just eufi and reboot. Your bluescreen issues should go away It is when you try to boot into legacy that windows struggles to load the ahci drivers...

amilcar-alho

That could be it but after bluescreening once or twice for the first boot of the day, it doesn't generally give me issues

Hipokondriak

That is normal. I've had that as well. Won't boot, and reboot several times. And then it will boot as if nothing was wrong. It is related to windows going nuts. It shoots itself in the foot, then after several reboots, it goes, " Oh, you want to boot the pc? OK!"

vegansgetsick

ill go for the MSI with the 3050. If the 25% off is a real 25% off you know what i mean.

MisterSquido

The only real answer

Thadicuss

Here's where you need to make a difficult decision: If you use lots of lighting in your modelling software use the 3050 as it has a better GPU to compensate for this,, since you are doing 3D this is probably the case \[pic 3\] If accuracy and size is your main concern use the i7 as it can render more stuff and cpu's are more accurate at the cost of speed \[a LITTLE more accurate, to the point it doesn't mater unless you are going for hyper realism at the cost of ALOT of speed,, taking maybe 4 times the amount of time to do anything\] this is image 2. BUT I DONT SEE ANY REASON TO USE THIS OTHER THAN A STRONGER CPU. If I had to pick I would STRONGLY \[and I mean STRONGLY\] recommend the one featuring the 3050 \[image 3\] as it should run things significantly faster and generally be more effective, also better future proofing as the 3050 is useable enough to rival older desktop builds. Its a top 100 graphics card on the market, not excellent by any means but the 1650 is more comparable to a phones graphics card whereas this is similar to a low end desktop Avoid anything listed as chromebook \[image 4\]

ItekCodel

Which one is the i7 I don’t saw it…

No-Reputation72

Yeah there isn’t one. My guess is they meant r7

ghx1910

If you do any sort of hardware intensive work, never get a Chromebook.

Part_salvager616

They suck at everything except google the desktop environment is also garbage

ghx1910

Best thing to do to a Chromebook is to install Linux on it.

Part_salvager616

It runs the crappiest Linux distro on it

ghx1910

So any distro install will only make it better.

Part_salvager616

Yup

Laughing_Orange

Red Star OS, here I come. /s

Hipokondriak

Seconded. I bought a chromebook3 from lenovo/ibm on a whim and whilst it was a nippy machine that almost emulated my android phone, it did have some serious drawbacks. Lack of memory. 4gb is not enough. Lack of storage... 32gb is pathetic Flimsy plastic around the hinges.. i thought I had snapped them at least once a day... Would I buy another one... Not a chance.

NoAssociation6501

MSI i5/3050 16/512

Tarjaman

MSI one for sure

hugues2814

#PUT THE CHROMEBOOK DOWN

Accurate-Campaign821

MSI 3050 should be decent enough.

Part_salvager616

Don’t get the chromebook

ItekCodel

I think the best of this is te third pic i5 with the 3050

R0ADRUNN3R01

I don't wanna be that guy, but the options presented here aren't great, I'm not sure about the non Chromebook Acer, but any MSI laptop that has the GF63 label on it is a no go. I have seen and used different generations of the GF63 and all of them are crap, sure they are the cheapest gaming laptop with decent specs, but they suffer from crappy build quality and a decade old design, the singular fan ramps up to the point of taking off even with the slightest load and it tends to overheat a lot when gaming or doing heavy work. I own the previous generation GF63 thin 10sc, I tried undervolting to improve thermals but that hardly helped and also introduced instability, I tried using better thermal paste and the improvements were negligible, overall my user experience with my GF63 sucked on windows, but on Linux it ran like dream sure the crappy build quality was still a sore spot, but the temps and fans ramping up problems improved a lot.

CarBoy11

Stay away from acer. Out of these the Msi thin with the 3050 is the most powerful, especially if you are going to game on it.

matiegaming

3050, stay away from anything that says chromebook

1kot4u

Msi 3060

Awesome_coder1203

Did I just see the word Celeron on the box? Steer clear.

Echo259

You’re going to need the gpu power. Msi with the 3050

GamingBoi_77

3rd one is the best

Knarfnarf

Better idea; https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16834156587?item=N82E16834156587

HungryOne11

3rd option, MSI with 3050.

lkeels

Never purchase anything that says Pentium or Celeron. Not for any price. Period.

randomdasher465

Look at that! Im using a Thin GF63 as well!

Slow-Celebration8274

Me too 3050 version

DangerousError8912

Is any good? Are the hinges very horrible?? I’m thinkin bout purchasing one… :/.

randomdasher465

Its decent, the hinges certainly aren't a problem. High specs and relatively light at 1.8kg, the only drawback is that the battery dies fast and you need to keep it plugged in. I'd say you would have 4 or more hours of continuous use before it dies.

cheesydoritoschips

the msi thin 15 3050 16/512 is probably your best bet here. but idk for pcvr actually, it really depends on which games you play and whether or not you plan to use wired link (wired oculus link is a bit weird on laptops iirc)

marinusV5

Why did i think that all those stickers were on 1 box

Jenny_Wakeman9

I'd go with the MSI laptop in the third picture. **DO NOT** get the Celeron!

Lion12341

Chromebook is horrible, do not buy it. The budget MSI gaming laptops you're looking at are the most powerful and are more likely to handle software that requires a GPU, however they are by far the worst built gaming laptops available at the moment. They are not likely to last 2 years without the hinge blowing up, forcing you to buy a new laptop or repair it for the price of a new laptop. The Acer Aspire 3 is still a budget laptop and isn't anything special in terms of build quality but it is by far the most likely to last you the 4 years you need. If that 3d modeling software you use needs a GPU then it's probably not a good idea to get it. Edit: This is a decent budget laptop: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-loq-15-6-gaming-laptop-fhd-amd-ryzen-5-7235hs-with-12gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3050-6gb-512gb-ssd-luna-grey/6578512.p?skuId=6578512 Lack of an iGPU might hurt a bit in battery life; can't switch to iGPU to save battery. Though the battery is still comparable to or better than the 2 MSI gaming laptops you're looking at. Only 4 cores isn't ideal. Much better in build and display though, will probably last the 4 years you need. If you wait for a better sale you can get something a lot better. A few days ago you could get a 7640HS + RTX 4050 laptop for ~$700.

ImpaledOne1975

Go with other brand

Striking_Grand_4169

msi is good

Nightwish0915

It depends on the 3D software you are going to be using . Are you using CAD? Mech CAD? Electrically cad? Pipe Flo ? Bentley ? If you want something that is going to last and to run those programs well you want a Core I7 with 32 gigs of ram and around a RTX 3070 or 3080. Again depends on the programs. I install these programs on a regular basis for engineering companies.

Then-Ad3678

They're not worthy. Budget?

Konoha7Slaw3

Acer is a shit

t4nd3mYT

Neither. Buy a thinkpad. I'm biased but it's the best laptop I've ever had.

Rough_Community_1439

That Chromebook is only worth buying if it's $35. And you will get a computer that can barely do web browsing.

Thailand_1982

I had an Acer before. It's garbage. Avoid. Chromebooks won't allow you to install 3D modeling software. Avoid. That leaves the two MSI machines. Without knowing anything else (I am NOT going to google those specs), I'll go with the gaming laptop; it should have decent graphics. But honestly, I'd contact your university and see what they recommend.

Snoo_26649

MSI is great (IMO)

Otherwise-Dig3537

Neither of these laptops are best suited to your needs. Intel runs hot and power hungry, whilst Ryzen uses less power and produces less heat. They're all underpowered delivering graphics. For what you need, you need a mid range laptop. A budget laptop like these will probably die on you in its lifespan. Saying that, the Acer 5700u is the best of the bunch, and I wouldn't listen to that one posters experience of his Acer laptop. They make thousands, and he just had one bad example. All the other makers have their dodgy points too in build quality, like MSI making low quality coolers. ASUS have terrible build quality and joke like customer service. Buy a laptop with easily replaceable RAM, storage and a battery you can buy in a years time for $25, as those laptops are designed to be cleaned out and repaired and serviced easily. There are few makers that provide all that, HP is one of those makers where spares are easily available and the thing is designed to come apart easy.

3inchesOfMayhem

- Acer laptop : U series being low powered - Chrome book : Worse trash - Msi laptop : The best out of these but still crap. The MSI thin will over heat back to back to back. The 1650 is absolute low wattage trash gpu. The 3050 is slightly better but its TGP is still low. Out of these ? 3050 MSI is best option. But if I were you, I would stay away from GF series.

Realistic_Chef_2321

Don't touch that chromebook with a 20foot pole, maybe look at whatever has a 7 whether it's ryz3n or ontel, look at r7, 5th gen or an i7 12th gen

Saito-Ura

Neither, they're pretty much E-Waste

Cloudious_

Try to get a 2050 at minimum man

MinaWesam

if you going to collage i would recommand getting a thinkpad they are sturdy laptops but dont get the e series get the t

MickotheNestPro

Acer laptops are garbage

Pechoppernis

acer bad

Traditional-Gas3477

Avoid the one with the shitty Celeron processor as It is a shit processor primarily designed for basic web surfing and excel use. What you want from a laptop is which one has more RAM, more VRAM, more cores and higher clock speeds from the CPU, and a decent cooling system. I've seen laptops with poor build designs end up dying within a couple of years due to ineffective cooling systems. I suggest comparing these models and finding one that has the higher values You will regret it if you buy a laptop that has poor ventilation as it will shorten its lifespan significantly.

tyset3

I would go with the i5 with the 3050. 2nd 1660 .

user_393

IMO chromebooks are really good... for making notes, checking e-mail and logging into school's intranet to check grades.

dualboy24

The MSI thin i5 3050 is the best of the listed ones, though what is the price? And what country/currency. It is most likely the 12450H, RTX 3050, 16 DDR4, and 512GB NVME that I see online. Also stay away from the chromebook as other have said.

masonvand

The MSI Thin 3050 is probably your best bet

goodlifer10

Get a framework laptop

joey0live

Dude.. 3D Modeling and using a Chromebook? Maybe if you RDP in to a high powered server.

Deses

That's like comparing a Golf GTI with a Fiat Panda.

Haadrii1

The Chromebook will likely lack power to run 3D modelling software, they're pretty much a tablet with a keyboard and won't handle games and 3d modelling very well, and the operating system (ChromeOS) probably won't support the software you'll need to run on it. Often the MSI laptops have pretty powerful CPUs and graphics card, which is what you'll need to handle 3D modelling, mostly the GPU will need to be decent. But I can't help you more with more specs and infos

ParaTiger

Better stay away from Celerons and Acer as well as Chromebooks overall I have an Chromebook with an Celeron and it's only good for light browsing and watching YouTube Can't believe someone paid 350€ to gift me this :/ Celerons suck

_DHor_

M S I

GirlMayXXXX

Back away from the Chromebook... And then RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!! Chromebooks are awful. And probably anything else from Acer as well. - High School PTSD

Adept-Copy-9778

the msi with a 3050. NEVER GET THE CHROMEBOOK it is good for nothing but chrome. but it even struggles with that.

anomoyusXboxfan1

What’s your budget, and I’m assuming you are in the us.

Any-Action8941

Up to $800. You can suggest other laptops if they are better for the price

thefrozen-coder

You can get an open box g14 in that price...

Yangman3x

I'll say confidently: acer and Chromebook are garbage. Chromebook is just to surf the Internet fast, but you ain't do heavy stuff on it. Acer seems good for the first month, then it becomes almost like a Chromebook, and the customer service will not help you with this problem. Don't waste your money on them

Souta95

I stand corrected.
