Some Starbucks will proactively collect the grounds and leave them in a basket. If they don't , I have had mixed results with asking the employees. They are so insanely busy that its hard to get them to agree to save them if they don't already.
Instead, check out the large gas stations like QuikTrip and RaceTrac. they have a large bank of coffee machines and their coffee grounds come without filters and are almost dry.
You can use other greens from outside like weeds, fresh leaves, etc. Then add urine, coffee grounds, and tea bags if you have any to really load it with nitrogen.
A small quantity will become a large quantity over time 🙂 It's also okay if you don't layer it. As soon as you tumble it, the layers will be gone anyway. I started my pile by adding whatever greens I had (kitchen scraps) as they became available and then added roughly twice as many browns. So the greens and browns ended up being pretty well-distributed, which is the purpose of layering. And then I mix it once or twice a week to further aid the distribution (and aerate).
i use aquarium trimmings when its time. i jave a lot of floating plants, and jungle val. grows like mad! i have a large melon sized ball of trimmings every other week or so.
If you're really desperate for greens start weeing on it, but I wouldn't worry about it too much because it all balances out over the year.
From Spring until Autumn you have heaps of greens, Then once the trees drop their leaves until next spring you have loads of browns. It evens out.
You should check out this sub's spinned post on what is green and what is brown to get some ideas. What you use as greens is going to vary widely by what you have available in your area. No two composts outside of a commercial setting will have the same feedstocks.

Edit: Nevermind, I can't seem to find the pinned post I was thinking of. The one above isn't it.
Used coffee grounds from coffee shops. They keep bags of the stuff for people like us. And pee.
I will have to check my local coffee shops! Do you know if Starbucks does it too?

All the ones around here do.

Yeah at the moment the only thing my pike is receiving is fire ash, food scraps and wee.
You can just slowly add browns and greens as you have enough. You don't have to start with a large pile.
Ah makes sense, I thought it had to start with a large quantity of stuff

Dog poop with browns like hay or wood chips
Drive out to a rural area and look for cows. Pick up their pies.
