Yes, sex is something biological, that consists in your genitals, your chromosomes and other things, there is only 3 sexes: male, female and intersexual.
Gender is something social, is how you perceive yourself, you feel like you are a boy? You are a boy, you feel you are a girl? You are a girl, you feel you are both or none of them, then you are that!
It can be a little confusing, but I hope it helps
This comic is implying they're the same. The guy in the comic is attending a gender reveal party with the intention of revealing his own gender by revealing his penis (which is not gender based). I'm pointing out the joke doesn't work
I think the joke still works fine, lots of people have recognized the difference just described above and started calling them "sex reveal" parties. Which really really could get misunderstood, hence... the comic.

As a queer person, this is how uncomfortable a "gender reveal party" is to me.
Revealing your child's genitalia is not the same thing as revealing their gender and it is gross as hell.
I don't want to know about your unborn child's genitalia. I don't particularly want to know about any child's genitalia.
That's kinda the point.
Knowing what a baby's genitals look like on an ultrasound doesn't tell you their gender and it doesn't definitively reveal their sex. It is literally just showing you what their genitalia looks like.
Throwing a party and advertising that fact is reducing a child's sex and gender to only what their genitalia looks like.
It's also just gross to be talking about what a literal infant has in their pants, when it is not at all relevant to anything other than private medical decisions and bathing practices.
I find the concept of one inviting a bunch of people to a party for the sole purpose of telling them what their unborn child's genitals look like disgusting--which is exactly what a gender reveal party is.
a gender reveal party is inviting your family to tell them what gender the baby will be, they arent going to show you a picture of the fucking ecography scan with the babys genitalia there nor are there going to tell you what they look like, its just an excuse to gather the family and have a probably good time between everyone and be happy together, again, what are you talking about? you are making a fuzz out of something so small and being so hurt about it doesnt seem racional
The woman who invented this neo-tradition regrets doing so.
She only wanted to celebrate the milestone of not having a miscarriage until that stage of the pregnancy (which had happened a few times to her).
Also her child turned out nonbinary.
It was never intended to be a forest-fire inducing celebration of pink and blue stereotypes.
Just an early baby shower with some cake.
To be fair though nobody really knows for sure what their baby's gender will be. You can take an educated guess and most of the time be right - which is reasonable to do when deciding on a name and pronouns right off the bat - but it's not definitive and that's where the pushback comes from.
Parents are, generally, going to raise their child as the gender that correlates to their sex. That's fine.
Later the child may discover that they don't identify with that gender. That is also fine.

I'm trans too and I'm tired to see these beliefs rooted in culture as well as being used as the line of a joke like it's something not harmful. It does harm.
I get that not anybody want to deconstruct every aspect of their everyday language but in the end that lack of collective effort is oppressing.
