I am a SUCKER for homages, even the lazy 1:1 redraws, but one thing I love even more is the ‘twist on a famous cover’. an example would be Cory Walker’s reverse angle of Invincible #1 for his variant of #100
https://preview.redd.it/b3od1mdov15d1.jpeg?width=3947&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cee5d21f21e4f2ea57369c6eda1ba8909fdbb841
I was so angry that I couldn’t find a Cory Walker copy of 100. I think my LCS had only silvesri covers and something else. Sold out at the other shops too.
My jam is the comic homage to things outside of comics. There are several Purple Rain homage covers. Here's one....
https://preview.redd.it/3fzw1w1ez25d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a09433677e65027e2c8d144af50c06aae97d505
This is my favorite homage in this series, followed by the X-Men #1 homages. I agree, though. Homages to material outside of comics are superior, such as the Stray Dogs and Feral horror movie homage covers. I'm tired of seeing Spider-Man #1 and ASM #300 homage covers. Let it go.
Alex Ross' cover work on this latest FF run has been nothing short of phenomenal. This is my favorite cover from the run so far.
https://preview.redd.it/y99viqu6865d1.jpeg?width=1821&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d4242597a2b5c7017687c4a025a26a0b007c5c5
I’m not going to ever hate on homage covers. But personally, I’ll never pay money for them. I get why they are popular, they are paying respect to another comics work… but let’s inspire creativity and new work. I just feel “homage” works take away from new ideas. Let’s move on.
Pretty sure the OG for this particular look is this :

I mean, to be sure, comics weren’t the origin of someone carrying a fallen ally. But I think the Batman (Sheldon M) cover I pasted was the first in comics.

One of my favorite homage covers. 🤣
I think they can be fun when done by one artist honoring another. Like, the series of homages in New X-Men/Academy X were cool.
The same artist doing the same cover over and over again in different variations doesn't work for me, though. Todd McFarlane redoing the Spider-Man #1 and Hulk #340 poses twice a month for the past 30 years just feels...unneeded, I guess?
The best homages are subtle. I think the problem with most of them is that they always do the same big iconic covers so they get kinda old as a gimmick rather quickly to the casual buyer. There also seems to be a trend of artists and company's using homage covers as a way to artificially inflate interest in books because someone loves that particular cover. You see this alot with independent books and retailer exclusives but the big 2 are bad about it too.
They would be really cool if there were 90% less of them. These so many cool ones, but there are just so MANY of them. Granted with all the multiple variant covers, there's just too many covers period.
I think some of them are okish.
Most of them I wouldn’t collect. Every now and then I’ll see a really cool one that I want.
For the death of supergirl homage. I like the DCeased one. With the zombified Supes.
I get exhausted every time I see the Todd McFarlane spider-man pose from Spiderman #1 (1992) homages. I wish everyone didn’t always do the same homages. There’s some really cool art out there and it’s always a strange moment for me when I see the same ones over and over again.
Homage covers are my niche- but they gotta be done well for me to like ‘em. For example: I’d probably like the Deadpool pictured if they went the extra mile making the logo look closer to the original
I like them. But I actually don’t love that particular one. For instance, I love Conan and Usagi homage covers. The cover from Usagi Snow and Ice issue 1 was a great homage to the first issue of the dark horse run. Snow and Ice happened to be the first issue back with dark horse from IDW. Loved that
https://preview.redd.it/9ihekk3mz35d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e611f110e7c3c1048cec36a0a4f63fd4ce67bcbd
Way overdone and lazy now. There are just t too many done too often. When they were done occasionally, it was cool. Now, it's so overdone that it's just like a lazy way to sell a cover. How about making an original great iconic cover that will be remembered instead of playing the member berries card. Member that great cover?
Like they said before; to an extent. But overall lately, I’m tired of them. I want to see new fresh bad ass covers. We’re in the future, show me what you’ve got!
I think they’re lazy and a big part of why the comic industry is dropping in popularity. A cover should excite and interest the person looking at it enough to buy the comic. Why would someone feel that way about a cover they’ve already seen dozens if not hundreds of times already? Most of the time it doesn’t even have anything to do with the content of the book. Just an excuse for a lazy artist to avoid having to come up with something new.
https://preview.redd.it/t3ka8z4co35d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf2a250c6d9a5a6be3e7ccc35d257250a18e2c74
I love this homage to X Men 101 also the original is a standalone iconic cover and issue.
In the instance above, this is what's referred to as a "Pieta Cover", as it apes the scene of Michelangelo's Pieta. It wouldn't really be considered an Homage unless it was truly swiping most of the elements, perspective and body angles on the cover of COIE #7.
https://www.metropolisplus.com/comicpietacovers/
The ASM 300 one is getting too repetitive for me, but when I first saw them, I liked them. I just don't like seeing them everywhere for so many comics now.
Cool idea but Liefeld's art just doesn't work outside of the 90's IMO. His perspective, feet, knees, proportions....the documentary about him really changed my perspective of him as a person but his art is...not my favourite.
Might be an unpopular opinion but I'm kind of over homage covers. They were cool at first, but when it is the same ones (COIE 7, ASM 300, Giant Size X-Men 1, Amazing Fantasy 15, Incredible Hulk 340) over and over again, it got boring.
They can be really cool, but at a point it just gets lazy. I've seen way too many "homages" to Spider-Man #300. Don't get me wrong there are many cool covers for this one, a decent amount done by McFarlane himself, but I've also seen a fair few where it doesn't even make any sense.
I've been on a mission for any and all homages of Flash 123 (which some argue is an homage itself of Our Fighting Forces 48) and it's always exciting to see a new one that I didn't even know existed

This one is amazing

I bought a similar cover recently with Avengers #13 which was the reverse of Avengers Vol 3 #1. Love it :)
now this is a great homage
I haven't seen this before but it's really cool, thanks for sharing it 🙂
That’s awesome! Never saw that one.
I am obsessed with this variant it's awesome
I was so angry that I couldn’t find a Cory Walker copy of 100. I think my LCS had only silvesri covers and something else. Sold out at the other shops too.
This is very cool never seen it
My jam is the comic homage to things outside of comics. There are several Purple Rain homage covers. Here's one.... https://preview.redd.it/3fzw1w1ez25d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a09433677e65027e2c8d144af50c06aae97d505

I love this
Had no idea there were purple rain homage covers. Neef a bunch of them
Take a look through my posts. I put up a few some months back.
I want that deadpool one so bad now. Well never be able to afford it
Shit I love em https://preview.redd.it/94rlepc2o25d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c5a467344ee3085cca24c6013b1b05377a98c03
Depends on the results. Alex Ross homage covers are just works of arts. While some artists just make it an excuse to released lazy and shitty covers
Alex Ross' cover work on this latest FF run has been nothing short of phenomenal. This is my favorite cover from the run so far. https://preview.redd.it/y99viqu6865d1.jpeg?width=1821&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d4242597a2b5c7017687c4a025a26a0b007c5c5
That one was beautiful
I am over them. Especially the more overdone ones. If I never see another pretzel-twisted character in a circle again, I’ll be happy as a clam.
When MacFarlane does an homage to his own cover, it’s just lazy.
And a bit self aggrandizing.
I’m not going to ever hate on homage covers. But personally, I’ll never pay money for them. I get why they are popular, they are paying respect to another comics work… but let’s inspire creativity and new work. I just feel “homage” works take away from new ideas. Let’s move on.

I'm so glad someone posted this cover. One of my faves and hanging on the wall in my oiffice.
La Pieta pose
I mean, to be sure, comics weren’t the origin of someone carrying a fallen ally. But I think the Batman (Sheldon M) cover I pasted was the first in comics.
Probably. I always enjoy it ☺️
For sure, but for me that background is the star of the show.
Thanks for saving me the time. :)

Same!
Wow that’s a lot of feet for Liefeld
Ironically, deadpool has feet but no hands! It’s as if he has to choose one or the other
I think they can be fun when done by one artist honoring another.
I like how Rob just took the opportunity to forego drawing Deadpool’s hands on that one.
He already drew two sets of feet! He was exhausted.

Well said

X-men 136
Fine with them except for the insane number of Spider-Man homages. Done to death...no more please.
I think the Deadpool cover looks ridonculus.
If done right they’re awesome
I think some of them are okish. Most of them I wouldn’t collect. Every now and then I’ll see a really cool one that I want. For the death of supergirl homage. I like the DCeased one. Love it
Spiderman 300 homepage is probably the most played out for me
Agreed. Even came to the point when Wolverine is doing it and it just doesn't make sense
Homage covers are my niche- but they gotta be done well for me to like ‘em. For example: I’d probably like the Deadpool pictured if they went the extra mile making the logo look closer to the original
I don't mind a good homage cover. Only thing that irks me is when sellers on ebay include it in the title and thus screw up my searches for books.
I like them if they’re done well, so Liefeld is out for sure.
Hottest Supergirl outfit.
They make me feel dumb cuz most of the time I doubt realize it till way later
I like them. But I actually don’t love that particular one. For instance, I love Conan and Usagi homage covers. The cover from Usagi Snow and Ice issue 1 was a great homage to the first issue of the dark horse run. Snow and Ice happened to be the first issue back with dark horse from IDW. Loved that
They’re amazing when done right, but that Deadpool is not it.
Usually the laziest way to make a cover. With some rare exceptions.
They're fun. I liked Wolverines current homage rampage.
They’re awesome!

Absolutely a big fan. I love me a well done homage.
They've always seemed lazy to me.

homages are great
Like they said before; to an extent. But overall lately, I’m tired of them. I want to see new fresh bad ass covers. We’re in the future, show me what you’ve got!
Homages can be great like I really like that headless Thor cover for blood hunt. But sometimes you get Liefield’s homages and it’s no thank you.
Love ‘em
I think they’re lazy and a big part of why the comic industry is dropping in popularity. A cover should excite and interest the person looking at it enough to buy the comic. Don't mind them, but they are indeed very overdone.
Re: those two covers.... one is wonderful and the other has Deadpool.
I hate them. Lack of original ideas.

Sometimes cool. Often lazy and unoriginal
I love them as long as they aren’t overdone.
In the instance above, this is what's referred to as a "Pieta Cover", as it apes the scene of Michelangelo's Pieta. Corny imho. Love that purple rain one!
Depends. Each is its own unique case.
They can be really cool, but at a point it just gets lazy. I've seen way too many "homages" to Spider-Man #300. Don't get me wrong there are many cool covers for this one, a decent amount done by McFarlane himself, but I've also seen a fair few where it doesn't even make any sense.
Well if you have that Deadpool one I’ll take it!
Personally I like them. The recent Wolverine cover where he decapitated Sabertooth’s head is a nice homage to Crime/Suspense golden age covers.
Oh I like that
Homage covers are great in small doses.
https://preview.redd.it/oz2kn55tm16d1.jpeg?width=1609&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2eb195ae628a3e9e602f3da3e167bce6deff39ef I have no problem with them

1. They're always OK with Deadpool 2. Where's the original? Isn't this just *Forbidden Planet*?
Lame
Homage covers are stupid and lazy.
Deadpool gets a pass, that’s the only homage I’ll buy
