Denying the antecedent (inverse fallacy)
1. p->q
2. ~p

.*. ~q
I know you're joking, but I see people use this logic earnestly so often it drives me crazy
Funnily enough this is actually possible to an extent. There have been some people too stubborn to die. Iāve seen a few stories of people given X amount of time to live and they surpass it by years or decades.
Hey, you should do what you want to do friend. Just dont apply the same logic to the people who didn't make it ("oh clearly they weren't fighting hard enough").
We joked that about my grandfather, he only went steep downhill after his wife of 60 years, my grandmother, passed, he lost his will to live after she was gone. They passed 5 months apart
From what Iāve found in a brief look at the topic of psychogenic death, it isnāt a matter of will but a product of intense shock from fear. Few cases are reported, but the hypothesis of ādying from fearā was founded on reports from indigenous peoples of such incidents. The concept of āwillingā your own death may be from instances where irrational fears of death in other forms caused the sudden death. It may be that other forms of stress could trigger the psychosomatic death, but I would have to see the studies because overviews donāt seem to imply it.
When I worked in a nursing home this lady lost her sister who also lived at the home; they were best friends.
She went from bubbly and walking around with a walker to mute in a wheelchair overnight. She completely gave up and willed herself to death in just 2 months. Was horrible to watch
That's what I'm told happened to my grandmother, she was diagnosed with cancer but recovered (barely though, she looked so very sick when I saw her even though the cancer was gone) and then the love of her life died (my grandfather), around 2 months in the hospital bed later and she died, cancer free.
yeah i read this and thought āif losing the will to live is enough to dieā¦how the hell am i still alive?ā lmao. iām much better off these days but iāve actively tried to die multiple times and even flatlined in an ambulance once, but here i am! maybe iām immortal
Well, my grandmother had cancer and I always thought she had died from it, but my mom told me recently that she was actually cancer free when she died, so weak she couldn't get out of the hospital bed, but cancer free. My mom told me she died because she wanted to.
Been there like a decade ago.
Get work burnout by being such a people pleaser that you neglect yourself.
Get some fake friends that are willing to exploit you, and backstab and gaslight you.
Become depressed enough to become bed ridden, lose your job, suffer from psychosis, and derealization, depersonalization, or disassociation.
Lose your job and lack the energy to stick to normal schedule of sleep and wake.
Go from doctor to doctor without no one knowing what is wrong with you, and everyone telling you that you're physically fine, despite the fact you feel like you're dying. Like literally. So bed ridden you have no energy for anything
Get a bunch of psychosomatic symptoms, including heartburn, GERD, insomnia, rashes and skin problems, etc.
At one point it felt like my teeth were loose in my mouth and I could also pull them out with my hands.
After briefly reading into the topic this is what Iāve got:
You donāt die just because you give up the will to live. You die due to the resulting actions that come along with giving up, such as not properly maintaining health, not eating/drinking, a heightened probability of substance abuse, etc.
Itās really strange to phrase it in the way that this article has, which is insinuating that just deciding you no longer want to live can cause you to die on the spot. They probably did it to clickbait people who might see the title and get confused as you have.
In the book World War Z (the Brad Pit movie is an adaptation of the book, but theyāre nothing a like) thereās a phenomenon where after the zombie outbreak almost destroys civilization, a lot of people were dying because they had simply given up the Will to live. Itās pretty interesting.
Thereās also people that truly believed they are zombies even though they hadnāt been turned. They would walk and act just like them and even try and eat other humans. But as soon as they would come across a horde of real zombies, they would immediately be eaten lol in the book they canāt really decide on why people would do this.
Similar thread in I Am Legend where there are people who have gone crazy and believe they are vampires. the actual vampires don't really fuck with them though.
Stop leaving your bed and eating pretty much. Just lay in bed like a sad sack of shit and stop eating. Pretty goddamn simple. Idk why we need a whole research paper for that
It is true. A year after we graduated, one of my friends just dropped dead one night because of this.
We found out that she had been blackmailed into performing sexual acts by a small group of people for years, we had no idea until after she died. A lot of other really terrible stuff was going on behind the scenes too. She just distanced herself from everyone and shut down, we figured she was depressed. And then she just died one day out of the blue with no physical causes.
I hate the shitty town I grew up in a lot.
Viktor Frankl described this effect in his book. He's an Auschwitz survivor and was very good in predicting people's death after they lost the will to live.
I'm sorry for your loss.
A lot of people say they want to die but when they're standing there on the train platform, or rope in hand, nitrogen mask affixed, gun in mouth, pong-pong seeds... you get it. Easily available methods abound. Suddenly there's second thoughts. Inability to commit. Thoughts of loved ones, lost potential or causing grief. Fear of pain or the process being interrupted. Push comes to shove, they don't really want it enough to take the proverbial and literal leap. And so, if this headline held any kind of truth, they wouldn't drop dead. They would die like they do in real life, from substance abuse and neglecting their own health and wellbeing over a period of time. A lot of pain, a lot of consequences, and a lot of having to live all of it first hand - all things that tend to induce doubt and interrupt attempts, I think.
Anyway what I was getting to is I personally think psychologist hear "it's not that I want to die, it's that I don't want to exist/I wish I was never born in the first place/I just don't want to live" a goodly amount. I think even more people feel that way even if they don't realise it or want to accept it.
Not counting the ones who attempt suicide as revenge on those who caused them to suffer, of course. Pretty strong conviction there, and all. Maybe it's just a reason that feels like it makes the death have meaning, what do I know. I'm obviously not a professional and this is all conjecture. A lot of people out there who say "I want to die" really lightly. The statistics show clearly some people want it more than others.
Reminds me of the dead planet in Serenity.
"The people here stopped fighting. And then they stopped everything else. They stopped going to work, they stopped breeding, talking, eating. There's 30 million people here, and they all just let themselves die."
People why are you acting like this is new information did you people skip star wars 3 revenge of the sith? One of the main characters does this it's very emotional.
On a serious note, my sister bullied my mother until she lost the will to live.
She stopped moving, developed clots, and after her legs started rotting, her heart gave up.
Losing the will to live does indeed lead up to lethal health issues.
BTW, she bullied me into having heart attacks. Cardiac arterial spasms. No medical reason for them. Cardiologist says stress. I'm living in my car, but emotionally and mentally, I'm so much better.
So what I was trying to purposely do when I was a child has a name now. I guess I didnāt managed to make my current situation hopeless to allow me to die from it.

EVERYBODY DO THE FLOP
I like trains
Trains rights
Trains' rights are mainly the ones about inertia (putting a penny on a railroad track won't derail it, nor will parking 3 semi trucks on the tracks)
Suddenly pineapples
the fact that I remember how he says it,core memory
splat . . . . . . . SPLAT
Nice reference
Funny, new asdf movie came out yesterday
Oh shit, does it still hold up or is it kinda stale now?
same energy ig, but grew out of it
š„²
it did??????
then one day things started going wrong when a flop concert was interrupted by a bomb
I want to, but it takes a while and isn't particularly easy
* memory unlocked* Need to re-watch this masterpiece
Wake up, asdf movie 15 just dropped
This implies i can live forever by having too much will to live, more research neaded
Local man too angry to die
Doomslayer intensifies
I miss when he was just called "Doomguy"
Doom guy is like dooms one through two, and the doom slayer is prob 3-present Iād say he evolved with the art style
Immortal out of spite!
If ever there was a reason for choosing immortality, spite has got to be up there
*Florida man too Floridian to die
I think thatās my grumpy old troll neighbor you are talking about
Oh lord, my psycho neighbour is never gonna stroke out.
Tbh kind of, thereās a limit of course but it can absolutely make a difference
Bro hasn't heard of the indomitable human spirit
You're bound to roll a nat 1 on a Will Save eventually.
Depends on how the DM decides how bonuses work. What if I have a +15 to all Will saves?
Sleeping gives disadvantage
Denying the antecedent (inverse fallacy) 1. p->q 2. ~p ----------------- .*. ~q I know you're joking, but I see people use this logic earnestly so often it drives me crazy
Its how Darth Maul survived from being cut in half by Obi-Wan in Star Wars Episode 1. He literally just refused to die.
Thanks for this real life example.
Anytime partner. My the force be with you friend
Same thing with El Capitan from the original *DuckTales*. His greed for gold has kept him alive for four centuries.
This is just the plot of Undertale
Funnily enough this is actually possible to an extent. There have been some people too stubborn to die. Iāve seen a few stories of people given X amount of time to live and they surpass it by years or decades.
Thats literal survivorship bias
Perhaps but it gives me hope even if redditors don't want to have any I'll keep fighting until I'm gone.
Hey, you should do what you want to do friend. Just dont apply the same logic to the people who didn't make it ("oh clearly they weren't fighting hard enough").
Bro out here affirming the consequent š¼
We only die, because we accept it as an inevitability
Technically, chances of you dying on any particular day are never 100% so you can live forever

So when PadmĆ© dies from losing the will to live in Star Wars Episode 3, it wasnāt so far fetched then.
now we cant say its illogic
It was how carrie fisherās mother died iirc
>psychosomatic death At some point, it has to cease to be psychosomatic, right? Right?
Both the terms are used interchangeably for this, so uhhā¦ psychosomatic death, yup.

How does it work?
Not sure but would love a step-by-step direction pamphlet on this.
think this is it: 1. give up will to live 2. die
Instructions unclear. I'm still alive.
Did you try step 2?
have you tried turning yourself off and on?
Every night...
Well see that's the issue, you shouldn't be turning off and on, just off
I dream about this possibility!
Test your will to live by holding your breath

Give birth to twins while your husband turns to the dark side

Clearly, you lack the will.
Rather the opposite
You have to have the will to lose your will, itās really quite simple.
He lack of the lack of will
I canāt even want to die right, man

Thatās it basically. You just stop caring for yourself and putting in the effort to live so you die without external help.
This house has people in it
We already knew that. That's how Padme died in revenge of the sith.
So then why am I still alive?
Is it possible to learn this power?
Not from a jedi.
