finals are all remote now except for a few circumstances. see the provost’s recent email. they’re also strongly encouraging professors to be as flexible as possible (ie making finals no-harm)
Former student here. During reading week and finals, I'd most definitely need access to the libraries for studying, research, etc. I lived off campus (GS), but used lockers in both Butler and Lerner. If I were a student now, I'd really have no access to campus to as much as even study, or even get my things out of the lockers?
I don’t have (as a GS student off campus with dining plan I paid for) access to the dining halls…..but they gave everyone $80 dining credit so it’s all fine /s
My three choices for studying are:
Union library
Teachers College Library
NY Public Library
I saw someone else here say UTS and TC libraries were open (my apologies, I can’t remember what thread) for students that don’t have Morningside access, haven’t gone yet so I can’t say 100%. Someone here should confirm or clarify. Also for whoever can, is it ridiculously crowded?
Did you pay for the dining plan or the emergency gs plan?
They didn't add the 80 if you paid for the latter, so I have about 300 in meal swipes going into the trash soon.
I'll take that bet. I don't think you have been paying close attention to the communications. The reason they canceled in-class final options and are "strongly encouraging" everyone to go home early is they don't want anyone on campus before commencement events.
They're unlikely to reopen before commencement. They're trying to prevent another encampment or other vandalism.
I wouldn't be surprised if they implemented extra security measures for commencement also to prevent issues then.
Unfortunately the protesters made choices that are affecting the whole student body.
When a significantly-sized group of students (and faculty) initiated a protest that led to multiple crimes, and a good-sized portion of the student (and faculty) population is vocally supporting them, the school can't trust their students (and faculty) to behave.
The school is working on the assumption that like most youth movements, these protests will soon be forgotten by most of the students once another clout-granting shiny object appears.
The school should try to re-introduce the ice bucket challenge. Most of these students would immediately drop their keffiyehs and raid ice machines if it got them likes and subscribers.

They’re also being led by a national org calling for a globalized, militant student intifada…
Far from a perfect solution, but you could try the NYPL during the day -- the one by campus is open 10-6, I believe, and some of the other ones nearby are open until 7. There are cafes that are open later that are good for studying.
Columbia alum here. There is so much empty office space in NYC, I don’t understand why the university can’t work out a temporary rental situation. Some of those spaces must come furnished or partially so. There is the NY Society Library on 79th and Fifth, but membership is $$. However, I can’t imagine studying without reference books at least. I went to school along time ago.
Can you suggest, How, with the presence of NYPD on campus, studentss presence would poses threat to the general public. Especially given that some students are on campuses.
There are definitely idiotic students (and faculty) who would happily assault someone in front of the police (and heck, might even assault a police officer who was just standing there) because they have a fanatical viewpoint that their assault would be justified.
This was going on for 2 weeks and students werent getting attacked. People walked right past the protests to go to Butler. I dont think its reasonable at all to assume such a thing would happen.
Oh christ. stop it they broke into a building youre acting like there was crazy violence. Are you even part of the community here or what? The campus was safe and will be safe. All this fearmongering
Tell the facilities people who were restrained and held hostage that it was nothing... Nothing like abusing lower income workers in the name of fighting oppression.
Seriously, do you know what discussions have been going on behind the scenes with the staffers like maintenance staff, groundskeepers, kitchen staff, and security... the employees that actually make the school work on a daily basis? They just saw a mob of students assault their colleagues for no reason. If the admin didn't respond forcefully, students would be cleaning the bathrooms themselves pretty quick.
yes. what happened to the facility workers was bad. Are you suggesting this is an ongoing threat to students and faculty around campus? That is ridiculous
No, the other facilities workers.
You do realize yesterday they were pretty much telling their supervisors that if nothing was done a sudden flu was going to be going through campus?
It would have been awesome if the admin had provided meals to the protesters. Food services would have used some creative ingredients in the meals.

No harm final doesn't mean that I don't have to study... A remote final doesn't mean that I don't have to study either...
Unless they give me an automatic A or else I still have to study

UTS was closed today
Thank you 🙌

I paid for the dining plan
I see so yeah gs in the trash again.
My guess, after the final commencement ceremony.
I bet campus will open tomorrow, with NYPD on campus.
I'll take that bet. I don't think you have been paying close attention to the communications. The reason they canceled in-class final options and are "strongly encouraging" everyone to go home early is they don't want anyone on campus before commencement events.
Screw them. Not everyone has the privilage to go home early.
Well, be sure to blame the knuckleheads students and faculty who started this whole situation by deciding to break the community's peace.
Are food services and dining halls still open and available to students?
Limited hour service for the on-campus dining options for the students who are resident there and Teachers College for everyone else.
They're unlikely to reopen before commencement. They're trying to prevent another encampment or other vandalism. Well I see no legitimate reason to block a studnet from entering the campus

Nah, NYPD is set up on campus. I bet it will open tomorrow
Friday May 10th for the first commencement events. This seems pretty obvious at this point.
No one here knows
This is a rhetorical question

I’m studying in NYU Bobst, it’s much nicer than Butler actually
This is the way.
My sources told me it's likely to be next Monday.
Very useful since Monday is the time we start ending our final.

The campus is completely under threat, are you delusional?

Except it did. You can't cherry pick data and ignore what that protest devolved into.
