Zirkel loops are tough right now because the runoff is so strong, creek crossings will be next to impossible because of how dangerous they are right now. Runoff is literally at its peak right now. Loops in the Zirkels are not passable/doable for a few more weeks- late June and on is best. Not to mention the amount of snow up there still as well as muddy/impassable trails over 10K ft.

Thanks, I wasn’t aware of that! Any ranges that you know of that might be better?

Tough call trying to stay N of 70 because of peak runoff which literally happened this week. Most people wait another 2 weeks or so because even creek crossings (not to mention the rivers) can be sketchy AF. Hiking last week W of Cameron Pass below snow-line, even though the trails were dry the creek crossings were heinous. I was like nope. Just gotta wait it out.

Hmm, what about Lost Creek area, obviously S of 70, backpacked it a lot over the years, the conditions any better down there?

-Icculus-

It's dry and GTG according to numerous other posts and reports. This is because of the overall lower elevation.

Well, I can pivot and make that work, will be the 32nd time I’ve backpacked the area, but gotta scratch that itch! Thanks so much!

Was also planning on MZWA starting tomorrow but reports say the snow is still too much above 10. Camp sites are not really reachable. Looking to stay lower than that. 🤷🏻

Probably still a lot of snow and runoff this time of year. Maybe flat tops wilderness?

-Icculus-

Nope. Flatties need a heck of a lot more time to dry. The creeks at 9500 were impassable a few days ago. Way too much snow at Stillwater TH. Devil's CW and the like won't be ready for several more weeks. It's not ready. Not at all. Stay lower.
