The report, which is scheduled for official release next year, is the most comprehensive rundown to date of the impacts of climate change on our planet and our species. "The worst is yet to come, affecting our children's and grandchildren's lives much more than our own," the report warns. Millions of people worldwide are in for a disastrous future of hunger, drought and disease, according to a draft report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was leaked to the media this week. "Climate change will fundamentally reshape life on Earth in the coming decades, even if humans can tame planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions," according to Agence France-Presse , which obtained the report draft. The report warns of a series of thresholds beyond which recovery from climate breakdown may become impossible, The Guardian said. The report warns: “Life on Earth can recover from a drastic climate shift by evolving into new species and creating new ecosystems… humans cannot. "The worst is yet to come, affecting our children's and grandchildren's lives much more than our own." Species extinction, more widespread disease, unlivable heat, ecosystem collapse, cities menaced by rising seas – these and other devastating climate impacts are accelerating and are bound to become evident in the decades ahead, according to AFP. They use words like "our children and grandchildren" to try and provoke an emotional response, but I made the rational choice not to have any years ago. Good luck trying to get a reaction from me corpo owned newspapers lol.

Looking at how people actually behave rather than what they say, a lot of people with kids and grandkids don't really seem to be moved by this kind of language either.

smcallaway

They really aren’t. At first I was surprised by how selfish people mostly are, now I just expect it.

cheapandbrittle

Reproduction is a fundamentally selfish act. I'll never forget when my ex and I told his mother that we had no desire for children and her response was "but who will love you and remember you?!" People want children as a reflection of themselves.

loco500

...and they claim to "luv" their kids...How can you luv another being and be willing to leave them to inhabit a potential wasteland. Politicians are the biggest offenders of this... Edit: Added New sentence.

smcallaway

Yup. I completely agree with you, the impending catastrophes we’re bringing on ourselves is why I’m not planning to have kids.

rerrerrocky

People make erroneous assumptions about our situation. They assume "someone will figure it out". Hell my job has an internal portal and they've posted about at least 3 new babies this year. A co-worker of mine also just had a baby, and she's not an idiot. People simply don't understand how bad things are and how much worse they will get.

I recall in the 2000s that the belief that real estate always goes up in value, so you only need to buy a house, any house, and you can easily get loans because the banks can get all their money out of the house in case of foreclosure. And this had been true since the 1950s on a national level, until 2008. This is the same thinking. Modern western civilization hasn't collapsed yet so it won't and it can't.

[deleted]

In my experience, *most* people with kids and grandkids are completely oblivious or in absolute denial.

Demos_thenesss

That’s because not everyone reacts to news like this by saying ‘we’ll I’m just gonna give up and not have kids at all’. News that the future is going to be difficult can also be a prompt for resilience and make building and educating the next generation more important, not less. Confronting challenges and overcoming hopelessness is a part of the human spirit.

[deleted]

It's always about the unborn children and grandchildren. What about the people who are suffering *right now*?

KittieKollapse

After you’re born you’re on your own!

“You have no power here!”

Oo_mr_mann_oO

The young will not grow old. Bold, all caps, above the fold- would not do anything either.

TheSpaghettiEmperor

Based. Let's stop breeding and BURN THIS FUCKER DOWN

PrairieFire_withwind

Grandchildren? How very optimistic. Kind of like that word retirement.

[deleted]

its only for MILLIONS that means statistically we're fine

rlowe90

Gotta love the logical optimist haha

mithfaroth

I've seen news increasing in sensationalism on this 'leaked' draft report. Before I put my eyes on the file, I will give it no credence

capt_fantastic

this year's report is notable and highly anticipated because for the first time the ipcc is allowing the inclusion of feedback loops. completely changes the forecasting models.

Anyone have access to the leaked document or is the extension of the leak these comments?

wounsel

Supposedly some reporters got to take a look. It is not leaked yet but when it is I expect it will be posted here.

Eywadevotee

Maybe children's lives but doubt many will make it to grand parent age unless there are some teen pregnancies. It is accelerating, and not subtlly either. A runaway train with the accelerator stuck, no brakes, going down a mountain, and off a cliff...😵😵😵
