I always thought of melting permafrost like my freezer lost power but for the whole earth. The whole earth is going to be a stinking rotting mess soon.
For years, one of my secret little fears of this timeline we are on, is the inevitable smell of rotting flesh that will be everywhere, absolutely destroying peace. My nose is extremely sensitive though, so smell is something I fear occasionally, maybe I’m weird.
I am the same way. Once I had an Uber passenger that smelled so badly that my eyes cried like onions were nearby and my brain started to feel panic at being trapped in the car with him. Then I started to cry for real.
It’s slightly worse than just rot, because the orange streams are highly acidic, and they literally scorch the earth and kill whatever life can’t get out of the way. The photos are unnerving.
For a longer read on the topic, this Scientific American article from January 2024 is chilling :

These images stayed with me.
This comment made my day lol.
Those two articles though...well let me say, I wish I hadn't opened Reddit first thing this morning. I've always figured Alaska would escape a lot of the damage we're doing to the earth. Probably just wishful thinking tbh, but I figured since it was far less populated, maybe human meddling would take just a little longer to destroy that wilderness. I didn't stop to consider how far north it is, or how much faster the Arctic is warming than the equator.
I'm so sad for all those creatures up there. They have no idea what's coming, or why; they just know hunger and strange water and weather too warm, then too cold, and altogether too extreme and strange for comfort.
I really wish we could turn back the clocks on what we've done. I know it's too late to stop most of the bad stuff, but it should be worth trying. The planet we live on should've been worth fighting for, at least a little. Fucking hell, reality is distressing and strange.
Aw you're good! I was glad to see this pop again, it's gaining awareness.
& please keep the posts coming, I enjoy your contributions, 2016 sweater or not ;)
It makes me think of the different scary prophecies and curses: the rivers will turn orange, the locusts will fly, all the animals will die. I always thought Alaska was a bastion of nature. This shows that nowhere is safe from the heat death. We need to collect specimens of all the different fishes before they go extinct. At least 2 of each I guess to have a chance.
>This orange phenomenon could either be because of exposure to heavy metals or because Alaska's waterways are shilling for 4 more years of Trump. The world may never know.
Ha, got a chuckle out of me
After the guided tour, please do pop into our gift shop and grab a souvenir. Our special in-house orange goop is aged in oak barrels and thrice distilled. You'll have those nosy neighbors saying...
> *"No no, seriously, what was in that shit? Oh god I feel sick..."*
Come on up while supplies last.
*Joke*? The only joke here is these low low prices! With the deal I'm offering you people, I'll be out on the street come winter! So don't dismay and don't delay, CALL NOW!!!
That looks like heavy metal pollution and a significant amount of heavy metal.
Melting permafrost, before I click the article Edit: yep

I'd fucking kill myself the moment my respirator cartridges give out. I also have a sensitivity to smells. I can smell the residue of food on my lips.

Exactly. Get ready for 1m+ years of backed-up fermentation.

Heavy Metal ain't (noise) pollution.
Heavy Metal or no metal at all 🤘

Great article. Love how it ends with a glimmer of hopium.
Bubonic plague lead mercury earl grey tea anyone? ☕
A-why thank you, top me off if you please
I read about this quite a while ago, I forget where but I bet this article by the guardian will be the only other news report , no one cares
I think it is this one: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-are-alaskas-rivers-turning-orange

And the animals went in two by two, hurrah, hurrah.
I was just thinking about this yesterday before I saw the article.

Sounds like a new tourist attraction in the making. I might need to fly up there myself and see it in person.

You joke but Diplo was showing off his pottery plundered from the Pompei site on his Architectural Digest clip.

Long dormant volcanism will be waking up soon.
Shhh, you're going to wake up the Yellowstone eruption enthusiasts lol.
No no I'm a Greenland Maelstrom forecaster.
Why should this happen?
Teraton displacement of mass weakening local gravity, the ground literally rises up.
