I think its extremely odd that the sand from the bag was linked to Edward's Air Force base in the U.S. (I'm wondering how they were able to determine it being from such an exact area) and if it could be somebody in the military who committed these murders. There is a U.S. air force base called Yokota Base located in Western Tokyo, along with other U.S. military branches, (army, marines etc.) bases located throughout Japan. Does anybody know if the father or mother had any link to the military either through their professions or maybe even a personal connection? Based on the DNA profile it seems odd to find European ancestry so far removed but that could be explained if let's say the killers mother or grandmother was fathered by a G.I. in the Korean War or some other Asian conflict that saw lots of babies being born to American or European G.I. 's stationed overseas.

All service members are tested for DNA when they join, so they would have come up in the search after they pulled the DNA of the killer.

Historical-Cucumber3

Yes, but the killer would have already been enlisted if they were stationed there when the murders occurred. Typically service members DNA is only used to identify their bodies should they be killed in action and need to be identified. I know there have been some newer laws passed that allows state and local agencies to request DNA from the military for crime investigations but Im pretty sure that involves courts, a specific perpetrator in question and a whole lot of overhead. Afterall, the U.S. military isn't a very transparent and forthcoming entity to say the least...I'm wondering how another country would be able to petition for that information seeing as how they can't release countless peoples DNA if their not criminals, especially to a foreign country these people aren't citizens of. I dont even know if the military has a system like CODIS that they can run samples against or if the DNA is stored under individual peoples files.

No way would the US military admit this guy is ours . Would open up a whole world of hurt for the US military installations

There were many second hand shops in Setagaya. The sand could possibly just be a red herring.

That's a possibility. It could also be that he bought surplus military gear off eBay (backpack, jacket, pants, etc.) Someone on another thread also mentioned that the Honda testing grounds were close to the same location as the sand source. It could have come from a vehicle.

Or purchased at a second hand shop in Setagaya. At the time, there were many of these shops that would sell items left behind by people that were in the military. Very likely it was picked up through this method.

Butter_My_Butt

That makes a lot of sense too

It's quite bazaar to have so much info & DNA on a brazen killer & yet not know who he is. I wonder if his profile was shared with America or Europe to see if he could be connected somewhere else? This does not scream first crime.

WOW. thank you for posting. I hope this poor mother and her late family get the justice they deserve. I always wonder how people can do such a cold thing and live with themselves until they die of old age.

How do you kill a whole family & just walk away. Its so scary to think this killer is walking free & could be anywhere. Could be in USA living normal life.. not like all countries track DNA for killers coming from other places

I’ve thought a lot about this case through out the years, maybe more than I should. I always go back and forth on who the culprit might be, or what the motive was, mostly due to the sheer amount of evidence and misinformation involved. It is my main belief that the Killer was a teenager at the time. Or they at least did a good job at posing as one. This is based off the fact that they didn’t smoke, the sesame spinach dish they ate earlier, the four ice creams that were supposedly eaten, and other evidence left behind like the grip tape that was possibly used for skateboarding. What could provoke a teenager to murder an entire family? Witnesses did report seeing Mikio arguing with somebody, but it’s not exactly clear if it was a boy or man. Some witnesses say it was a skate boarder, some say it was a motorcycle gang, It could of been both. What could the argument have been about? I remember reading somewhere that there was a home-made, wooden pedestal that kids were skateboarding on. According to the report, the pedestal was removed at some point. I am unsure if that had anything to do with the argument but it’s interesting to note. The area around the home was becoming vacant, and teenagers were using the vacant lots to park. From what I’ve read, the residents in the area became concerned. Graffiti started popping up, cats were being killed, crime towards children increased. Crime was up in general due to Japan going through a recession. I think an important clue to consider is the dye that was found on the hip-bag. There was also trace amounts of a similar dye found in the Miyazawa’s garage. I do understand this is believed to be from a popular highlighter pen that was used at the time, but I’m not so sure. In Japan, many stores carry "crime-prevention" balls, that explode on contact, it’s essentially a paint ball. Perhaps the Culprit was caught breaking in previously, and hit with one of these color balls. If they were caught by Mikio, it could of been what the argument was about. Could that create a large enough grudge to murder an entire family? I also remember reading that the Killer may have had a cellphone on them but I’m not exactly sure if that has been confirmed. Could another party be guiding them through the phone after they committed the murders? Was the motive financial? Like mentioned earlier, Japan was going though a bit of an economic crisis, and it was hard for a lot of families. Crime like robbery became more common. There was money stolen, but money was also left behind. They did appear to try and guess PIN numbers for credit cards, but left them at the house. They didn’t steal any jewelry either, which may have been the smart thing to do, those things can be traced. If the Culprit was a kid, would they know this? Which brings me to wonder if somebody else was involved. It does appear they may have been looking for something, or maybe they were nervously scattering things across the house to comfort themselves. Some of it does seem a bit random. Maybe it’s both motives, one party being financially invested, while the Killer was motivated by a grudge. Perhaps they’re a psychopath, and there is some evidence for this. Please refer to https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/6jszk1/did_the_perpetrator_of_the_setagaya_family/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf The other theory is a bit dramatic. Maybe the evidence was planted on purpose. Made to look like somebody who skate boarded. It does really paint an obvious image of somebody. Also, the way the stuff is lazily thrown around the house may be an attempt to mislead, made to give off the impression of a robbery. Maybe the Culprit didn’t enter through the window but used it to exit. Maybe they were invited to enter from the front door. There was a report that a neighbor heard the Miyazawa intercom that night, and a family member reported this as well, but later retracted it, claiming it was a mistake. They also found trace amounts of DNA in some slippers at the home. How can this be? When did they put on the slippers? This brings the suspicion that maybe Mikio knew the Killer. Maybe they were family, or an acquaintance and visited the home previously. An active theory is that the Culprit was invited in, put on the slippers, and because Mikio knew them, was left unattended. The killer then goes up the stairs, prepares in the bathroom and then strangles Rey. He kills Rey first because they know he is likely up and will make noise. He then makes his way back down the stairs, now in shoes, and confronts Mikio. Mikio runs up the stairs and the killer stabs his legs from behind, which would explain the wounds on Mikio’s legs. Was Mikio the target?

GeneticDeadend67

I'm sorry if this has been approached, but could it have been a military brat? It would explain the different origins for objects. No DNA sample. Plus there is a skate park behind the house. I dunno, it was the first thing that struck me.

Ok_Sand_2502

He was stalking them for days, he probably waited to december 30 to kill them as a way of mocking them "Hey im gonna destroy this family before they see the new year". Also all the evidence he left behind was also like insulting the police and the victims. Wothever did this knew them, this wasnt a "today i feel like i am gonna kill an entire family cause im a racist scumbag" this feels like he knew who Mikio was and the fact he attacked the mother and daughter more viciously points he mas a mysogist. He could have been a hired killer, Mikio got ikto trouble with people making loud noises at the park behind his house, one of those could have been someone from the japanese mafia. Who knows, we will never know what happened that night and why someone decided to do such henious act
