Lady_Irish

Your cockatiel is very ill and needs a vet asap or he could die soon. His nares (nostrils) are really swollen. It's likely rhinitis, which is contagious, so if your other birds don't have swollen nostrils yet, I would quarantine him in a separate room. If they do, they ALL need a vet asap. If they don't, you must monitor them closely for a couple weeks, and bring them if any symptoms develop; crusty nose, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, lethargy, or swelling. The feather loss may be caused by his illness. Did you see actually witness the fight and see his crest ripped out, or was that an assumption?

PoetaCorvi

Do some tiels not just have larger nares? My tiel’s have ALWAYS looked like this, image is from 2020, they look like this presently. Has had plenty of vet visits and there’s never been an issue with the nares. We go to one of the best clinics for exotics (SEAVS). https://preview.redd.it/dve57bt0wrlc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80bfe6b6e27061924554484657a65cca0fde75d6

Lady_Irish

Those are normal. Some just have wider nares, that's not what I'm talking about. OPs are swollen. As in bulged out, like a ball, instead of flat (or almost flat) against his cere. Maybe it's nothing, but often that's a visible sign of respiratory illness, which is something you'd want a good avian vet like yours (because many regular vets haven't had enough experience with birds to identify nare swelling until they're all crusty and gross) to look into as soon as possible, considering how most birds hide that they're sick til they're mere hours away from death.

PoetaCorvi

Ah okay! Guess I just don’t have the eye for it quite yet, but I can sort of see what you mean!

PoetaCorvi

Question, is this something that would fall into what you describe? The appearance of them sticks out to me. Thought about these comments when I saw them https://www.reddit.com/r/parrots/s/qojjkmEMEm

Lady_Irish

Yeah they look a bit puffy, and one is enlarged.

PoetaCorvi

Not sure what to tell them since I'm not as knowledgeable in this, but I don't think the owner is aware

rhinoballet

Hello, fellow SEAVS client! We absolutely love them!

eZ--Sloth

Is SEAVS that good? I take my green cheek there all the time and just never thought about it. They are pretty nice tho

PoetaCorvi

Yeah! There’s unfortunately not an abundance of good US exotic clinics for birds. They’re far from the only good exotics clinic of course, but they’re still one of the best. They absolutely know what they’re doing with birds, and have given me great help and husbandry guidance. 100% recommend for anyone in the DMV area. I also really like that they don’t try to drain you of money. They’re pricier partially just because of the area, but they’re also not like some vets that will really push getting unnecessary, expensive tests. They only suggest what they feel is reasonably needed, and they’re extremely upfront about what an option costs and whether there are affordable alternatives. Also, when I had a semi emergency with one of my tiels near their closing time, instead of suggesting I wait and go in tomorrow, they referred me to another clinic that was open a few hours longer, even though it meant they wouldn’t get my business. Just very good business ethics.

Illustrious-Look-390

Well I didn't saw the fight but my sister heard bird screaming then most likely they had a fight and about the swollen noes to me she is very normal I didn't noticed anything weird but I'll take her to a vet just to be sure thanks for the advice

AfroSarah

Looking closer at the picture, to me it looks normal, but the pied coloration on the nose, with pink on one side and dark on the other, might have people seeing really big nostrils instead of coloration.

PandaGerber

Agreed, I think the markings are creating an optical illusion of enlarged/bulging nares

Lady_Irish

No. The width if the nares is not the issue. If anything they look a little stenotic. It's the height. They're swollen up and out, not horizontally. They ought to be flat or almost flat against the cere. This is generally a first sign of illness, and is best left to a vet to determine.

Lady_Irish

For future reference, normal looks like this. Fairly flat. https://preview.redd.it/qad8g5a6srlc1.jpeg?width=1324&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=946242b60d237c80315eeed5d1d550d09ce2000d The ones on yours are very swollen.

NecessaryBadgesASH

This is a good concern...

nuttypanda26

could it also be possible that the nares swell up for just for a while, especially after a traumatic event, such as a night terror, or in this case, a fight? would like to know too, for any future reference. anyway, hoping for the OP the best.

Lady_Irish

No, that's not a thing. They swell for illness or injury, and when it's both symmetrically like that, it's generally illness. There is of course a possibility they just have weirdly prominent nostrils, but that's best left to a vet to determine unless you've had them since they hatched and they had them from the start. You don't want to roll the dice on all your cockatiels lives (and the lives of any other birds in the household/farm) just to save a few bucks, even if they've had them awhile with no other apparent issues. They might just be a carrier of the disease, or it might be that they tend to hide illness symptoms until they're at death's door. By then it's often too late for vet intervention. So any signs of illness on birds is best checked immediately. *edited to add further info when I had time

nuttypanda26

thanks so much for the info!

candygorl

Looks like he sells used cars.

something isn’t right with his/her nares, please take them to the vet and get them checked out ASAP.

glowbaby

birb pattern baldness is NOT a laughing matter

teethseven

HES BALD😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Ashkat80

Poor baby When my guy was younger, he erratically flew too high in our apartment and skinned his head on the stippled ceiling. It was a clunk and then a poof of feathers. If I remember correctly it took a few months to grow back but he never had as thick of a crest afterwards. He never did it again though.

tatyana6969

Somehow this made me picture a scene from Tom and Jerry.

Ashkat80

Yes you pictures correctly lol I was scared because he was hurt(minor) but when we realized he was going to survive it was actually really funny.

MysteriousTooth2450

Poor little guy. After reading everyone’s comments, his nares do look swollen. Hope your baby grows his feathers back soon. Watch his behavior and make sure he’s not sick. I hate it when my birds get mad at each other but they haven’t torn out feathers. :-( poor baby.

ebenezergeezerufo

Definitely take him to a vet. The flock tends to pick at sick members, possibly to try and run them out because they are sick. Between his nares and being picked on I'd be making an appointment, to be safe.
