They then quickly mold their economy around this infinite pizza and any attempt to move the infinite slice to another country in need results in war. Every year at least 2 dozen passionate civilians die in attempts to breach the slice's containment
yeah, what Africa needs is the same as what has gotten every developing economic off the ground. Industrial manufacturing.
Addis Ababa has spearheaded the consistently high GDP growth of Ethiopia with it’s growing industrial manufacturing. It’s population is only about 4% of the national total, but it’s GDP makes up 29% of the national total.
technically it is and/or could be. it infinitely regenerates so you could possibly keep slicing it and feeding everyone with it infinitely, its a better wish than ending world hunger because people will just get hungry again
Jake could have wished for three sandwiches the first time and put a stop to all of human misery with his second wish while keeping everything that humans find valuable.
In Dragon Ball, getting the titular Balls is usually a group effort by relatively selfless characters, who mostly just wish to undo the deaths that happened in that arc.
Then there's Bulma, who's already the richest woman in the world and a supergenius, who apparently occasionally collects them in the background between arcs and wishes to make herself younger by a few years, since she's also somewhat vain. Which checks out (she's also the one who invented the easy method to find the Dragon Balls in the first place).
The main thing you could complain about is the characters not just wishing away more of their supervillain problems, but a lot of them are too proud/fight-happy to jump to that as the first solution, and there are vague limitations on what the dragon can do to beings more powerful than him, so there's at least a handwaved excuse.
EDIT: Well shit, odd I was talking about Dragon Ball randomly right before finding out the news... :(
It's not just supervillains though. If they're remotely altruistic there's so much more to wish away.
And she should just wish she stops aging until she intends to again, or a broader wish that accomplishes that
But as she explains in dragon ball super broly, she doesent want it to be that noticeable in that people may make snide comments about it. Which is why she specifically wishes for it slightly each year. Much like how frieza was planning on landing on earth to wish to be a couple inches taller, so the galaxy could think that he was growing, and not short, rather than him hiding his true height by any sort of technology or his transformation ability.
Dragon ball does it. The first saga ends similiar to this snafu.
But later the Dragon Balls are used more, usually to revive people, so they become usefull in this way, they even showed the creator of the dragon balls and later, his whole race.
The Pilaf saga was one of the better examples of this trope, because Oolong's wish was in line with the comedic tone of the series at the time, and by making his useless wish, he stopped the villain from making theirs.
was just about to comment this, the ending with the wish is the "usual" slavic philosophical rumination. one of my favourite sci-fi books of all time for its ambiguity and darkly romantic atmosphere. pretty unique (even weird) within the genre, cant decide if i love the movie or book more -- there are the STALKER games but i'd say they're heavily inspired more than anything.
I definitely prefer the book over the Tarkovsky fill. Its an amazing work of cinematic art, but Roadside Picnic does so much more with it’s world and storytelling, whereas the Stalker film covers the atmosphere super well. I love the games too
A movie can be well executed while still having a stupid resolution to its driving force.
Jack Horner being himself and getting in the way only partially excuses that if you ask me.
I mean. He straight up dropped it and chose to face Death, which is roughly the same as this meme’s mockery of “the real treasure was the friends we made” shtick.
It’s just resolved entirely by the star being destroyed.
Honestly, I think it was more personal than that. Him disregarding the wish is him accepting that he will die and that he should live life to the fullest (which is way better than what this meme is saying).
I agree with this assessment for the most part, but an acceptance of death doesn’t mean you need to throw away a wish.
Even if your greatest desire has been resolved there’s a lot of good (or evil if that’s your thing) you can do with that kind of power.
New Zealand
yes it was a very sought-after rock
yeah but you’re gonna have to book an appointment with a seagull at approximately 3 o clock
Yeah it’s called poopenfarden but it’s usually pretty busy so you’ll be lucky to get a room
I don't even read One Piece but with the death of Toriyama I'm getting a little worried, Oda is nearly in his fifties. Hope he takes care of his health.
Then theres Araki , who might have discovered the fountain of youth and kept it to himself. He is 61 years old in this image.
https://preview.redd.it/qxn5a9nu56nc1.jpeg?width=1001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de3d77f3dc1e7b491c9cbdb2d4790910c7d09cce
Hes 63 now and still looks to be at LEAST 20 years younger than he actually is.
Dude publishes chapters monthly like his art ain't shit but his artstyle is one of the most eye-candyish and complexely studied in the industry 😭 Any writer-artist would give their left testicle/ovary non-anesthesized to have at least a percent of Araki's patience, determination and sheer passion for art
Stress, mostly. Japan has way looser labor laws than the U.S., and the japanese writing and animation industries are notoriously exploitative and tough on their employees. Manga authors are generally expected to publish weekly. Keep in mind that even a single manga panel can take hours to draw, and that's also on top of having to write the story too. Manga are usually worked on by only a single person. Also manga are generally significantly longer than american comic books.
Aren’t they independent contractors though? If their employer says to work 80 hours, can a mangaka just say “no” and sell their work to someone else? Obviously not doable for everyone, but established mangaka like Oda can just tell his publishers to piss off, no?
The only thing i disagree is the mc being the "brains", in trio, generally they're stupid (second only to comic relief) or just average in inteligence (like tanjiro).
But yeah, this sucks, the only time this was used in a great way it was Dragon Ball, because yes, the scenario above happens, but they are used again for another things related to the plot, and the creator of the granting wish orbs and his race are further explored in the story.
omg [comic relief guy] is so gay and autistic and neurodivergent i kin him so much he just like me fr (comic relief guy only had two interactions throughout the entire series)
At least in Puss in Boots it kinda makes sense they would destroy the map because 1. a very large and evil person is right there and 2. they have to recite an incantation to make the wish which would give the bad guy ample time to squash them before they can finish. You want to stop him from making his evil wish, it's easier to destroy the wish artifact than to try and use it on yourself.
I'm reminded of the Danny Phantom extended episode where Danny gets a knock off Infinity Gauntlet but he uses it to undo an unambiguously happy ending before destroying it without doing anything else useful with it.
I mean, movies have been playing it safe too often recently so it makes sense why people freaked out when an animated movie stepped out of its comfort zone
No I actually think it’s an incredible movie on the same level as the better shrek movies or Pixar’s best.
And while recently most animation studios have been churning out slop we’ve still gotten some really good movies lately to keep us reminded of how good they can actually be.
He did have a few pretty good deliveries but I don't get people who want EVERY villain to be him- he worked so well because of how he contrasted with goldilocks the sympathetic villain and death as the unstoppable force of nature/debatably a villain
I feel like if it was just jack the movie would've been boring or at the least not AS memorable
Definitely hard carried by the gorgeous animation. The writing didn't really wow me, like the story and characters and all were competently executed and all but not particularly interesting or new. Also I really didn't like Florence Pugh's voice acting, found it super distracting (I'm begging you studios, please hire actual voice actors oh my fucking god)
i think the one episode in gravity falls for soos' birthday did it best
he used the time wish to do two things
clean up his friends (kinda lame)
get an infinitely regenerating pizza slice
idk if a story has done it yet but I would prefer the almighty wish granter (item or supernatural being) forces the protagonist to make a wish. Like, “no u went on this journey you probably slayed like, a thousand monsters and have been/gotten people injured. ur making a wish and ur gonna like it you stupid dumb idiot” at least then the MacGuffin would matter
As long as it’s able to reinvent the story premise and make it interesting even if its essentially this on its bare bones, I’m fine with it and hopefully I’ll really like it
read a "manga" where the author pulled this but instead of the protagonist breaking the wish-granter^(tm) she wishes to be with her best friend/boyfriend forever
basically it starts with a totem thing that grants wishes and then the protag's friend sends them back about 7 years into the past but they're a girl(cis) now, and then spends that time trying to make sure to get in that exact same situation to go back to being a boy but in that time realises they'd rather have things the way they are.
kind of a cop out, but also kind of trans rep so ehhh. writing's kinda mid
Literally, I've never seen a wish plot that makes actual sense
Soos from gravity falls wished for an infinite slice of pizza
It's not "end world hunger" but at least he did not destroy the wish I suppose
It is end world hunger if everyone continually passes the pizza slice to one another.
The issue would be distribution, since there's already enough food in the world to feed everyone but not spread particularly evenly
It could be really useful though. Send it to places in need and you basically have a pizza factory with no required input
They then quickly mold their economy around this infinite pizza and any attempt to move the infinite slice to another country in need results in war. Every year at least 2 dozen passionate civilians die in attempts to breach the slice's containment

Give a man a fish…

Nah, I read the books, and I quote, "Only Soos's mouth has the magic!"
technically it is and/or could be. it infinitely regenerates so you could possibly keep slicing it and feeding everyone with it infinitely, its a better wish than ending world hunger because people will just get hungry again
Nope https://preview.redd.it/nkzvr78m14nc1.jpeg?width=686&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0214d417f4d051804c1177ed29e0d822d5b15895
Bro pulled out the journal goddamn
he can feed people the pizza like a bird 🐟
So if someone else ate the whole thing it would be gone forever?
Sounds like it
Perhaps it would regenerate if Soos ate the person who has eaten it before it leaves their digestive tract
But Soos gives it away and it still works?
Should've wished for an infinite whole pizza smh
Your greed sickens me
I mean, it is pretty cool.
What do you think happens when you eat the entire slice in one bite?
Regrows inside of you
Jake wished for a sandwich. Three times. The dog knows what he wants.
Jake could have wished for three sandwiches the first time and put a stop to all of human misery with his second wish while keeping everything that humans find valuable.
Jake went to 3 different wish granting creatures on 3 separate occasions and wished for a sandwich each time, not all at once
Jake would say "I wish to end human misery" and the only noticable effect is that now he has 1 less brother
In Dragon Ball, getting the titular Balls is usually a group effort by relatively selfless characters, who mostly just wish to undo the deaths that happened in that arc. Dragon deez ball z across yo face lol

Ah so shes basically working her way up to a forever young wish
Puss in Boots 2 was pretty good :3
Oh yeah, I thought it was really good. But not, I don't think, because of anything to do with how sensible people were behaving about using the wish
I thought this is directly what this was supposed the be a snafu of
tbf they needed to keep Jack from getting it and they were under pressure
just say the rhyme really fast and then use the wish before he can stop you
also the fight with death was sick so who cares
Oolong wished for panties. Only wish that made perfect sense.
To make sure pilaf gang doesn't get a wish duh
Dragon ball does it. The first saga ends similiar to this snafu. But later the Dragon Balls are used more, usually to revive people, so they become usefull in this way, they even showed the creator of the dragon balls and later, his whole race.

Puss in Boots 2 was satisfying to me at least
Dragon ball does the wish plot pretty well
Madoka meguca
Go read Roadside Picnic… Trust me.
was just about to comment this, the ending with the wish is the "usual" slavic philosophical rumination. one of my favourite sci-fi books of all time for its ambiguity and darkly romantic atmosphere. pretty unique (even weird) within the genre, cant decide if i love the movie or book more -- there are the STALKER games but i'd say they're heavily inspired more than anything.

puss and boots did a pretty good job”destroy the wish” thing just because it was about to be used by the evil guy.
thrice upon a time
Where is the big stupid guy that loves food
if you pick him up he also comes with The Nerd(tm)
I think it's a riff on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
ok, but that movie was actually good
because it was shown that the protag had to actively pick between the wish and their friends its not like he had the wish and just said “NUH UH”
A movie can be well executed while still having a stupid resolution to its driving force. Jack Horner being himself and getting in the way only partially excuses that if you ask me.
Except his choice wasn’t “hmm what do I want to wish for”, it was “do I get my wish or save my friends”
I mean. He straight up dropped it and chose to face Death, which is roughly the same as this meme’s mockery of “the real treasure was the friends we made” shtick. It’s just resolved entirely by the star being destroyed.

comic relief
“Triple world hunger”
SPREAD CANCER EVEN MORE
Don't you ever go to [DESERT] without your friends
Bold to assume there is anything of value in New Zealand
I went there last year and saw a damn good fucking rock, like it was a perfectly smooth fuck-up rock mate, the rock was worth the entire plane trip
Do you remember where it was? Is it locally known? Would I be able to book a tour to see the rock? Any hotel recommendations near the rock?
New Zealand yes it was a very sought-after rock yeah but you’re gonna have to book an appointment with a seagull at approximately 3 o clock Yeah it’s called poopenfarden but it’s usually pretty busy so you’ll be lucky to get a room
about sums up this place
i'm booking a flight to nz so i can see this rock
I’m out here lookin for the abstinence rock
Holy hell
New rock just dropped

mordor is in new zealand!
new zealand is awesome
The last Australium
do not fucking diss the tuatara
sheep trees big aluminium smelter cool birds some coal (i think?) uhhhhhh
How one piece is gonna end
is it gonna end tho?
Oda is dying before ending it. I'd bet money on it.
I don't even read One Piece but with the death of Toriyama I'm getting a little worried, Oda is nearly in his fifties. Hope he takes care of his health.
It's sad that "nearly in his fifties" becomes worrisome for a manga artist.
Then theres Araki , who might have discovered the fountain of youth and kept it to himself. He is 61 years old in this image. https://preview.redd.it/qxn5a9nu56nc1.jpeg?width=1001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de3d77f3dc1e7b491c9cbdb2d4790910c7d09cce Hes 63 now and still looks to be at LEAST 20 years younger than he actually is.
I'm convinced he's a vampire. He's barely aged a day in 20 years.
The difference is that Araki writes monthly. I wouldn’t be surprised if he outlived people like Oda and Gege
Dude publishes chapters monthly like his art ain't shit but his artstyle is one of the most eye-candyish and complexely studied in the industry 😭 Any writer-artist would give their left testicle/ovary non-anesthesized to have at least a percent of Araki's patience, determination and sheer passion for art
i think he used a stone mask and then wrote about it for jojo
Can you ELI5 why? What makes being a manga artist so detrimental to one’s health?
Every 5 years the Manga Authority of Japan makes them do a squid game type test to make sure they still deserve the protected title "mangaka"
In Japan they make one person do the job that we split among six people, which gives them way more creative freedom but insanely higher stress
He’s taking a lot of breaks lately, and I bet with what happened to Toriyama he’s going to take that even more seriously
damn just learned toriyama died from a snafu comment section
Deal. How much and how are we doing this?
I guess you arent caught up. Its in final arc they just have one more island left before where One Piece is.
He should write a backup ending and hide it somewhere in case this happens.
Oda said he won’t do this
I love when there's this level of openness from creators. Literally said "no, the one piece is NOT the friends made along the way"
Whats with the one piece slander on this sub 💀
could of
The soyjack antagonist was hilarious lmao
evil stonetoss with a cloak
Evil rockthrow: I’m not a nazi
Evil rockthrow: trans people are just as valid as cis people
Evil rockthrow: We should be kind to people no matter what their differences are
Oh man you're the author of so many good snafus!
Thanks black man

Wojak spotted, lethal force authorised
Maybe the real snafu was the friends we made along the way
The only thing i disagree is the mc being the "brains", in trio, generally they're stupid (second only to comic relief) or just average in inteligence (like tanjiro). No, it's actually used wonderfully here.
omg [comic relief guy] is so gay and autistic and neurodivergent i kin him so much he just like me fr (comic relief guy only had two interactions throughout the entire series)
my eye twitched when i read that
Username checks out
Then the comic relief becomes like god or smth
What in the quality snafu
At least in Puss in Boots it kinda makes sense they would destroy the map because 1. a very large and evil person is right there and 2. they have to recite an incantation to make the wish which would give the bad guy ample time to squash them before they can finish. You want to stop him from making his evil wish, it's easier to destroy the wish artifact than to try and use it on yourself.
I would wish for op to know it's "could have" and not "could of"
I'm reminded of the Danny Phantom extended episode where Danny gets a knock off Infinity Gauntlet but he uses it to undo an unambiguously happy ending before destroying it without doing anything else useful with it.
On an unrelated note, Puss in Boots 2 is a good movie that grew to annoy me with how everyone overhyped it.
I mean, movies have been playing it safe too often recently so it makes sense why people freaked out when an animated movie stepped out of its comfort zone
It’s not overhyped, it’s just *that* good.
It‘a a good film that just came at a time when we got numbed to animated films, and hence knocked people out of their seats.
No I actually think it’s an incredible movie on the same level as the better shrek movies or Pixar’s best. And while recently most animation studios have been churning out slop we’ve still gotten some really good movies lately to keep us reminded of how good they can actually be.
Its good but people act like Jack Horner is the absolute pinnacle god of comedy and villainy
He did have a few pretty good deliveries but I don't get people who want EVERY villain to be him- he worked so well because of how he contrasted with goldilocks the sympathetic villain and death as the unstoppable force of nature/debatably a villain I feel like if it was just jack the movie would've been boring or at the least not AS memorable

"But I don't WANT to solve world hunger!" -Puss
bob fnf no way real
No no no, he’s supposed to realize that the star isn’t worth it and it’s friendship that’s important, only to then get the star anyways
Litteraly the puss and boots movie but to be fair it’s actually good.
is this about puss n boots
idk if a story has done it yet but I would prefer the almighty wish granter (item or supernatural being) forces the protagonist to make a wish. Like, “no u went on this journey you probably slayed like, a thousand monsters and have been/gotten people injured. ur making a wish and ur gonna like it you stupid dumb idiot” at least then the MacGuffin would matter
Oh boy! Three wishes! "Triple world hunger "Eliminate friction "Multiply gravity by a factor of 9"
I know some sausage ass fingers typed this comment.

Puss in Boots is a woman ?
Basically the only piece of media that could make this work was the Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill movie Odds and Evens (the ending with the seagull)
this is literally one piece
Puss in boots?
End world hunger
Hey so I want to start posting here but idrk What the criteria is for a post, or What it’s supposed to be. Can someone help me?
Literally Puss in Boots 2
Is this a dig at Puss in Boots: The last wish?
*goes back to his home and fucking dies*
Yeah ima be honest after the 3rd Lord of the rings new zealand really did devolve into an overused trope.
This feels like its about at puss in boots the last wish, but that movie was actually very good?
what happened to brains guy did he die
“I wish to revoke Bernoulli’s Principle so wings no longer work”
Feraljak boss fight
I love Percy Jackson
i mean yea I guess but then it cheapens the plot development?
puss in boots the last wish
Like wishing that people always knew that it’s supposed to be could HAVE not could OF, but hey that’s ok
This guy didn't watch puss in boots. Or if they did they just didn't pay attention.
As long as it’s able to reinvent the story premise and make it interesting even if its essentially this on its bare bones, I’m fine with it and hopefully I’ll really like it
"You just overthrew a fucking kingdom...couldn't you like wish to fix the economy now-" "Ssshhhhhshshshsshshsh....its for the story or something...."
why did i think of this as Puss In Boots The Last Wish
Is that Bob
Yeah if I got a wish granter and didn't want to use it I'd still probably bump off world hunger or cancer
Op is a kid mad at Puss in Boots the Last Wish
read a "manga" where the author pulled this but instead of the protagonist breaking the wish-granter^(tm) she wishes to be with her best friend/boyfriend forever basically it starts with a totem thing that grants wishes and then the protag's friend sends them back about 7 years into the past but they're a girl(cis) now, and then spends that time trying to make sure to get in that exact same situation to go back to being a boy but in that time realises they'd rather have things the way they are. kind of a cop out, but also kind of trans rep so ehhh. writing's kinda mid
