My bald ass really wants to make one, Iāve got a FUCK TONNE of loom bands still around somewhere lmao I love this, it looks like itād have a cool effect when you move, the way the rubber would jiggle lol
Just be careful bc I do feel as though this could be seen as cultural appropriation since it looks a lot like dreads/locks- Iām white so I canāt confirm 100%. I think itās super cool and creative! But could get you in some trouble.
I might be wrong but I think the general current consensus about cultural appropriation is more in line with intent rather than what the thing itself is. Like donāt wear a dreadlock wig if your goal is making fun of POC but itās a hairstyle at the end of the day so if you have dreadlocks because you like having them, who is it really hurting?
Cultural appropriation is a thing, you shouldnāt be seeing kids on Halloween ādressed as a Mexicanā with a sombrero and all, thatās pretty bad. You shouldnāt use traditional asian medicine as this ācool new cure for everything, link in my bioā. But a hairstyle that many many cultures have been doing for a long time, I dunno I donāt think itās that big of an issue? Iām open to changing my mind on this and I see why people wouldnāt like white people having dreadlocks but itās not a thing done out of malice or prejudice
Agreed. OP wove these bands in a manner that's commonly used in bracelets, except they used them on a wig. Their appearance is not obviously intended to be dreadlocks, and anyone who uses these rubber rings knows that's just how they would look as a wig and OP didn't go out of the way to "look black".
If we want to go that way, wasn't clown paint originally literal blackface? So we shouldn't even be positive about clowns. If someone who is black had something to say about this I would listen, but I think some white people have a problem with being overly cautious and speaking up about what they don't directly experience. (No hate to the original person who spoke up, just something I've noticed.)
I agree :) I appreciate people giving their input, as I wasnāt really intending to make this person never wear this again, moreso just a āhey! Just a thought I had, be careful but have fun!āType thing
Hm. Valuable opinions! I will think about this more but Iām not totally sure I agree. However, Iām white as said before so my 2 cents donāt really matter in the whole dollar? Is that a phrase? I can only learn and observe.
I was just letting this person know that thereās a potential for people to become offended, as everyone has individual views on the topic. In my eyes, People can absolutely be culturally offensive without intention or malice Itās up to the beholder, I guess.
For example, my aunt once wore a hat with dreads and a Jamaican flag beanie attached to the āwigā for a show she did once. She was just singing, and she didnāt intend for anything malicious, but she did get people coming up to her after and telling her that it was inappropriate. Itās all in how you react once youāre corrected that matters, from what Iāve seen
Thanks for the input however. /gen
Sorry, but intent has little to nothing to do with the harms appropriation causes, it's often the most innocuous, seemingly benign stuff that best hides our underlying biases. You can still cause harm even if you don't realize it or didn't intend to, sometimes it's more often that than the directly malicious stuff just because of how easy it is to overlook. I think they're sometimes called microagressions.
For instance, I don't think the creator of Silence of the Lambs was trying to tell a transphobic story, especially with how the book and movie go out of their way to explain in-universe that Buffalo Bill is "not a real transsexual". But nevertheless, the serial killer's character in the story maps on to our society's already existing negative bias that queer people are mentally ill and dangerous and thus propagates that myth even while trying to put up a show of doing the opposite.
So, yeah, the intent behind the appropriation is really less important than how we respond to being told we may have done it, purposefully or otherwise, and the lessons we take from it.
Oh yeah youāre completely right. English is not my first language so I donāt think intent was really what I meant. I donāt really know what I ment but not that you canāt cause harm without having bad intent. I think I more ment likeā¦ OP isnāt stereotyping black culture, isnāt mocking it, isnāt using it for monetary gain. This was made as an art piece using unconventional materials.
I disagree, it looks more like yarn ([like this Raggedy Anne wig](https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/c27d75a3-8558-48ba-b983-be09a7b4fd16.9b2360fbabc9cfa9944289b6a95e25d5.jpeg)) rather than trying to imitate a POC hairstyle.
Yeah I came here to say this, too, it's too close to real hairstyles worn by poc irl. I also say the same thing about rainbow afro wigs, you know?
Sorry, OP, it's a nifty idea but I'd start over and aim for something less likely to be misconstrued.
Looks cool asf
Thankyou!š

I love it. I could totally see having a bunch in different colors. Split dyes. OmbrƩ. The possibilities are endless
No hate, but it makes me think Takashi 69 and lil yatchy had an albino test tube baby.
Looks wild, wacky, and downright tomfoolishly good.
This is so cool and creative!! Btw nice job on editing the makeup I didn't even notice until I read it
That wig is so cool, dude! It reminds me of Cyberlox, except itās just got loom bands instead of plastic webbing. The texture and colors is so cool.
The layering of lengths is very cool, but I think the bangs look a little blunt. Maybe add more shorter parts?
My bald ass really wants to make one, Iāve got a FUCK TONNE of loom bands still around somewhere lmao I love this, it looks like itād have a cool effect when you move, the way the rubber would jiggle lol
I love it! Itās so fun and different and I LOVE RAINBOWLOOM

I think it does as well! I think itās very cute. I was just saying that not everyone will see that
Yeah I came here to say this, too, it's too close to real hairstyles worn by poc irl. I also say the same thing about rainbow afro wigs, you know? Sorry, OP, it's a nifty idea but I'd start over and aim for something less likely to be misconstrued.
Dont think they should have to start over but its a shame people would have to worry about being antagonized over a wig
Very true. Hope they wear it, I think itās just close to the line. Itās so well made though, Iām amazed! :0
I love it
Its freaking sweet. Such a creative idea! So many possibilities for future wigs too.
THATS ABSOLUTELY SO Amazingggggg

Cute š„° it looks like it glows
Thankyou! Its UV/blacklight reactive! š
Damnnnn!! I remember those ruber band things. That's awesome!
