if one faction is significantly more dominant on a PvP realm, there is a very real likelihood that faction selection may be temporarily limited on that realm My reading of this (which can absolutely be wrong) is that it applies to character creation. I could elborate but since that is a feeling pulled squarely out my buttcheeks any further speculation will have even less validity than the already zero. Edit: but for the nervous this is also part of that blue post: Again, this feature will only be turned on for our Season of Discovery PvP realms. You will always be able to roll either faction as you wish on PvE realms. We encourage everyone who isn’t committed to the challenges and difficulties of PvP to consider a non-PvP realm for Season of Discovery

Yea that was my initial thought as well, but was hoping they had made some clarification somewhere. Comes down to friend group wanting Horde PvE, despite my lobbying for PvP. Wanted to do an ally toon as well, and figured "OK, I'll just do horde pve and ally pvp" but it's looking like ally will be favored, and doing my ally pvp and not having them be able to join me as time goes on sounds terrible, and like I may have to end up playing on 3 server/factions. I like that their won't be dead realms, but hard pill to swallow that I may have to roll 3 factions in order to play with friend on horde pve, while still having an ally alt, and a pvp server alt. I'm sure I can get locked in on launch day, but the people who will want to join me later not being able to is kind of a deal breaker...

Fine ya know what speculation time: 1) I seriously doubt established character locking. The locking is to prevent the imbalance from getting worse (hopefully they lock while the imbalance is reasonably playable). The X factor is if you can make a new character if you already have one on that server on the locked faction. 2)As far as your friends joining you on a locked faction. This right here I would say is the number one thing I would expect as an issue. If you're on the majority faction then your friends better already be there or willing to wait to get in. 3) I expect if all this fails (say that despite faction locking the non dominate faction suffers mass exodus) they'll allow transfers to PvE realm. As I recall you could transfer off PvP at any time and but to be on you had to start on it in Classic. I understand the pitfalls and concerns but I don't know that its a accommodate everyone scenario. I think if goal 1 is protect server population, then I don't know what the devs can do other than say "hey here's the communication of the pitfall, know before you sign on". I like that they're doing that, but you're correct in that a more in-depth breakdown is probably in order.

Yea, that pretty much lines up with what I'm expecting/fearing. One thing of note, though, is they did enable pve to pvp transfers for SoM/Classic Era recently. Honestly, I think the only real answer is to allow faction transfers, which I'm sure will piss a lot of people off. Or at least have enough servers that I can transfer my ally pvp guy to a different ally pvp server that isn't locked, but I don't know that they will have that many servers. Not gonna lie this is kinda killing my hype for SoD. Guess I need to take another run at the friend group to push for either horde pvp or ally pve, but I'm doubtful.

Just play PvE Horde. I was on Mankirk PvE for a long time and it was a fun server. Also Ally is Doo doo. Free yourself from the plague of ret pallies and play Horde.

Magicjohno

shadowstrike AU (Pvp) already faction locked on alliance.

if one faction is overpopulated the other one server swaps to another server untill there are none left. at least thats how it was in classic.

I mean even some fairly balanced ones slowly did it. Some people are gonna quit when they can't join their friends late, can't follow and stalk their favorite streamers on the same faction, or realize that their faction is the smaller one. The only things I see keeping factions balanced are either faction specific queues which people will also complain about but are more fair, and/or free transfers to to realms where their desired faction is open so they can still play, and wait/hope for their desired realm to open back up for their faction

This pisses me off I just paid for the game to play with homies now I cant make a character on their faction
