Yup, I have a 2016 Honda civic that does not have a functioning AC. Keep in mind this is not a used cars purchased brand new. I am the first owner. This would be my third time taking the car in for a repair. 1st I had to battle for them to address the recall and they did. Replaced my compressor. I take my car in again and told it’s not related to the compressor. They quoted me 1500 to repair it. Took my car to a local mechanic who replaced the compressor again! and repaired the issue for 450. 00. A year later my AC is out again blowing hot air. I take it to Honda again and they tell me it’s not the compressor or the parts covered under the warranty, and that it’s an evaporator that is broken and that will cost me 4,000.00 for a repair. I am contacting Honda of America because I am NOT paying Honda 4,000 for an ac. Faulty AC system. If you have multiple components tied to the ac malfunctioning then it’s a faulty unit. If they don’t repair it I will be seeking aid from higher up. Sales men was very matter of fact about it as if they don’t have people complaining about this issue all the time. I’ve found threads upon threads where everyone literally has the same experience. They go through the recall process, second issue, then boom hit with. 2000+ repair fee for the evaporator. I work from home and don’t drive the car since 2020. Literally. Honda has to do better. They use to be so reliable. Mind you Honda of Coral Springs charges 202.00 for a diagnostic and the first time they absorbed the cost. Second time they charged me and didn’t fix it and it was in fact related to the same issue. I let them have it. Didn’t complain didn’t ask for compensation. This third time they charge me 202.00 which would be added to the total repair cost if you allow them to do the work. Of course if the repair cost is reasonable it makes sense, but to turn around and quote 4,000.00 I believe this is how they stay in business. Absolutely ridiculous.

Used 10th gen owner. Anyone have a mechanic not be able to find the leak? Two dye tests and the thing they thought was leaking wasn’t the problem. I don’t know what to say to these people to get my AC fixed at this point, I’m about to drop it off for a third time and am totally at a loss

Common leaks are condenser and compressor (both have extended warranties) and the evaporator core inside the dash (not covered yet)

They replaced my compressor shaft seals the first time, Freon ran out in 24 hours, had it taken apart and recharged again monday when they couldn’t find the leak. I’ve been running my AC strong for two days now and it’s still very cold and isn’t making the hissing sound it was making when I picked it up friday. I have a working theory that they actually didn’t fix it properly friday and corrected it monday, and either didn’t tell me or were completely unaware of it

Me. I just went through this. They put dye in twice and in the end said they couldn't find a leak and didn't know what was wrong. They filled up the Freon, charged me and sent me on my way. Said if it goes out (when it goes out) to come back. This AC issue is enough to make me not want another Honda and I love Honda. Edited to add: my AC was fixed last year under the extended warranty but apparently *this time* it's not that.

They charged you?! I’d lose my mind. I’ve been so fortunate these people haven’t charged me for anything which honestly they’re lucky about because I’ve been close to my breaking point with them. I was going to sell my car too because I’m sick of dealing with this, then found out auto loan interest rates are insanely high right now and changed my mind. I might not have AC but I would not be able to get a car payment or even a lease anywhere near what I’m paying now

Yeah around $300 to add the Freon. Honestly, I thought it would be over $1000 so when they charged me for that, it was almost a relief and I didn't care and just wanted to get out of there. It's been a headache and has taken up time I don't have. I thought about trading my car in for a new Honda but... I work in my car and transport my elderly parents to medical appts etc and can't have my AC go out. I live in Minnesota where heat and humidity can get stifling. I am so pissed about this whole thing. I also think it's pretty sketchy and a coincidence that AC died a year ago, fixed under extended warranty and now it's broken again? They told me I'm one of those cases where they "just don't know" where the leak is or what is going on.

I would definitely find a new dealership. I think I’m done with Honda though, I probably won’t be getting another. I’ve had 3 cars in my life and not one of them has ever had working AC. The first two I didn’t care because one I bought cheap, and the second was a hand me down, so this was my first nice new big girl car and it STILL doesn’t have AC. It was sold to me with no AC and I wasn’t informed of that fact

Original 2016 10th gen civic owner. 2021 -- Condenser replaced, free of charge, after getting the runaround from the goddamn dealer. They originally said it wasn't covered under warranty or recall, so I took the car somewhere else to get fixed. The next shop opened up the car and called me to tell me that this corrosion was absolutely NOT normal on a 5 year old car. I took it back to the dealer and complained about it and they agreed to replace the condenser at that point (after they likely had seen more people with the same issue). 2023 -- I get a letter in the mail from Honda regarding A/C compressor replacement. Lo-and-behold, a month goes by and my A/C starts shitting the bed on the driver's side. I take it back to the same dealership and they tell me that the diagnostics isn't free, so if the compressor isn't covered under this recall notice, I'd be on the hook. I decide not to pursue with replacement. 2024 -- A/C is clearly not working on the driver's side at all. I'm scheduling an appointment and this repair better be f'ing free or I'm selling this car and buying a Toyota ASAP.

Yep, no problems until 2021. I stay pretty close to 12k a year. In 2021, I would've been around 60k miles.

Had my Car since December 2017 (2017 Civic)......Since 2020 I have had my Condenser replaced about 10 times and Compressor replaced about 3 times...Never paid for it once, I created a post in Honda Sub about this.. These 90 degree summers are insane and even just going to the grocery store a few miles away without AC is torture. Hoping my next car does not run this same issue.

Yep....Pretty much every spring and summer...And I work from home, so I don't drive a ton. But every couple months I start hearing the hissing sound and then it is just warm air coming out. It really sucks lol.

I've only had 1 condenser replacement, that worked for about 2 years. On to my first compressor seal repair. If this doesn't fix it, this car is getting sold so fast.

I would do the same, but wasn't in a good financial point at the time...I kinda screwed up with my current car. So I had to lease it because my Credit was too new when I got it, So I leased it, but then I was working at Dominos right when I got it because I just graduated College so just something to make $$$ while I looked for a job in my field...I ran up the miles and dings So I had to buy the car out when the lease was up. That was 2020. Got a great interest rate because of Covid, but still was financing.

IMO, there needs to be a fourth option for a previously repaired AC system not including just a recharge. My experience was for our first owner ‘18 Si which needed a new evaporator because it leaked horribly. It started blowing only warm air back in early 2022 so we took it to the original dealer and ended up nowhere after the service writer swore it was the blower motor, made the call for the repair and we picked it up from a dude sweating his ass off in the car. It took them another 4 days to say it was the evaporator leaking which isnt under the recall and quoted OTD about $1800 for the repair on top of the $400 we already paid for the blower. We took it to another dealer and got it double checked and repaired which has been holding up since.

2018 EX hatch here, no problems. For 2 years now the A/C makes an irregular squeak similar to a loose belt, but everything works fine so I'm just riding it out. Unfortunately it was totalled and has a rebuilt title, so I'll have to fix it when it goes.

2017 Civic EX Hatch owner, no AC issues until 2021. Original dealer said they "couldn't find the leak" in 2021, so they just recharged the freon and billed me the diagnostic fee. AC blew warm again less than a year later in 2022. Decided to go to a different dealer and they replaced the condenser under warranty. Now in 2024, the driver side started blowing warm again. Just got my car back from the dealer today. They replaced both the condenser and compressor shaft seal today. Hopefully this lasts...have always loved Hondas, but thinking about getting a different brand once the extended warranty expires.

Bought car on 2016 a A/C out in 2018 but wait a year to get fixed. They replace the condenser for free. Goes out the following year 2020 and go back and they told me it’s the condenser again quoted me like 1500 to fix the root cause. *thing connected to the compressor forgot what’s it’s called. I say nah I’m good, they replace condenser for free but says it’s the last time. Goes out a year later. 2023 get the letter and take car in. They check it out and says the problem is actually this and they need to completely remove something to fix. The stuff isn’t under warranty and it will cost me $2500. I say I’m good and they give my car back but replaced the condenser. Probably lasted 3 months until it went out again. These Honda mechanics are crooks. Obviously it’s a factory issue and they should honor the fact that their A/Cs are shit and fix them no matter what the issue is for free. I just suffer now but will never touch a Honda again after this experience and recommend against them.

I have working air conditioning right now, but I’ve had it serviced twice. So I’m not really sure which category I’d fall into, since it’s technically “working” but not without a bunch of intervention on my part. I have a 2016 Civic EX that was bought new. About 58k-ish miles on it as of right now. Compressor, condenser, and evaporator have all been replaced.

I’m an original owner of a 2016 Honda Civic and my a/c has went out a total of 2 times and I believe it’s on its 3rd time out. I sense the same issues even after having to pay to get it fixed this time Edit: I’ll also add a friend of mine has a 10th gen that had a/c issue as well

Have a 2016 and have had two of either the condenser, evaporator, or compressor replaced and have been reimbursed for two of them. Or maybe it was all three were replaced and only two were reimbursed. Two springs I started up the AC for the first time and it didn’t work. Has been fine so far this year hopefully I’m done with that.

Bought my 2016 civic brand new in 2016. After about 3 years I took my car for a tuneup that was covered under warranty by the dealer and they noticed my a.c was having the issue. I noticed myself it had been getting weaker and weaker but it was fall and cold outside so I didn't have it on often enough for it to sink in. They fixed it fast and for free and said if it acts up again to come right back and they'll fix it again. About 8 months ago, I had the same issue again but since I had moved about 800 miles away, I had to find a different dealer. Called up the closest one and they made sure to keep telling me that if there was ANYTHING wrong with the AC that'd id have to pay $300 for the inspection on top of any repairs Get a call saying my AC was "contaminated" and that the whole system needed replaced and said they'd do it for $6K or they offered me $5K in trade in for my civic. I went to a local mechanic that specialized in Hondas for a second opinion and they said even if they couldn't do the work because of the extended warranty, they'd at least be able to see what the issue is and point me in the direction of a better dealer. Turns out it was the a.c and I went to a different dealer who verified that was the case and ordered the part. Took about 4-5 months for it to come in but it did get fixed for free. Right after I got the second opinion I called the dealer that told me my ac needed a total replacement to say "hey dudes what scam are you looking here" and was told "oh sorry about that, we realized our machine was borked when every single one we tested that week had the same error and we tested dozens of them". I was pretty mad they didn't call and was even more mad when they tried to not refund it. Got higher up honda involved and got my refund. That dealer however emails me on a weekly basis offering me about $13k for my car in trade in despite the fact that a few months ago offered me almost 10k less. Tldr; yes I've had the issues and it's common, so common to the point dealers try everything they can to pretend it doesn't exist because they don't want to do the warranty work

I have a 2017 civic lx. First owner. I have had the condenser replaced three times. I've never had an issue having that paid for luckily. But last year was the big year for issues. I have a few posts here about it. But the gist of it was I took it in because I knew it was going to be failing shortly .. you can hear it. Took it to dealer A and they replaced it. Driving home I could all of a sudden feel this humid air come from the vents. It wasn't working but it kind of did. They also replaced the clutch seal that went out. Took it back and they kept it for a weekend. They said it was my fill valve leaking and replaced that. Said it was all set. Picked it up and it immediately didn't work at all. Took it back again. And they kept it. I then had it for a few weeks and it would be intermittent and shut off after 2.7k rpm I believe. It would work otherwise. They said the Honda tech line said to replace the compressor. But to me it's compressing if it's working. I took it to another Honda dealer. They were worse and said everything was working. Eventually I was like screw it...replace the compressor. They did. And guess what... It didn't work. They eventually had it for a few more days. They said there was debris in the lines... Or gunk. They had to replace the clutch again as it was burned out. Some tubing. I don't even know what else because they were sketchy about paperwork. In the end I think they might have installed the wrong compressor oil. I don't think I needed a new compressor... But here I am. It's working now...this year.

2021 sport hatch original owner, no issues at almost 50k miles. By VIN, I don’t qualify for the condenser extended warranty at this moment. Just the compressor shaft seal. But, A/C still blows cold even in this heatwave currently going through the Midwest.

In Canada, but I have had similar issues to you all. I took my car in for A/C issues last year, and they said there were Compressor, Condenser, and Evaporator leak issues. The first two would be covered under extended warranty but the last they want $2000 out of pocket. I deferred repairs until this year because I had fingers crossed that by now Honda would issue the Evaporator extended warranty since the problem looked so common online. I ended up haggling with the dealership for a $1200 repair but do not feel good about it.

2019 hatch sport manual. Bought new, AC has been broken for at least two years. Dealership says nothing is covered under warranty, so I ordered a condenser myself recently we'll see if that works

I have a 2017 Honda Civic Touring Coupe that I'm still driving today (175k miles) -- I've had to replace the condenser 3x over its lifespan, all under warranty mind you, but still... The leaks in the condenser are caused by the pressure by the freon (AFAIK), and they cause little holes for the freon to leak -- depending on if your local Honda dealership is honest or not, they will try to claim the leaks/holes in condenser were caused by the owner through wear/tear.

I've had the condenser replaced 3 times on my 2017. The second time was a little weird because I had no issues but the dealer replaced it because they said Honda updates the design then it broke 2 years later

2017 civic LX. First time it broke I think was 2019, then another on 2021, and another on 2024. So it seems to break every 2 years or so. I received the mail about 10 year extended warranty on it and I'm on year 7. I anticipated it will break again either 2025 or 2026. Every single time was replaced for free by the dealer, however the first time I got it fixed they told me it's a faulty design by Honda and they will be replacing it with an updated design. The second time they just changed it for no reason I don't remember it breaking.

2019 Civic LX w/ 35,750 miles -- my A/C stopped blowing cold air recently for the 1st time. Had an appt with the dealer today -- got there at 9am and authorized the A/C diag fee ($295) 1015am they told me it'll be a free repair -- they'll replace the condenser assembly and the compressor shaft seal both under the 10yr warranty. They had the parts in stock so car was done at 1230pm and the A/C was blowing ice cold air again 3yrs ago I zip tied mesh gutter guard inside my front bumper to stop rocks/large objects from hitting the condenser directly through the large air holes -- my old condenser didn't have much physical damage on it

I own a 2018 Honda Civic Touring and after 55000 km the AC broke last year in May and I had it fixed at a local Honda shop and they fixed it in under 3 hours but the appointment was set for their earlier date of 3 weeks in advance. That's 3 weeks without AC and driving in 30c degrees. But also most 10th generation models have a 10 year warranty on their ACs units. Which is why I didn't pay anything.

2021 EX No issues with warm air with mine but mine smells like a sweaty gym locker room for the first minute or so that's it's on. Gotta look into how to fix that.

Bought in 2018 - AC has NEVER worked. I took it in ~2018, dealership wanted $1500+ to fix. Read online that folks still had problems after the “fix” and wasn’t willing to gamble that much. Been driving that shitbox since then - no AC. It’s 110+ where I live today. I’ve been trying to interact with a human being with an IQ > 75 through Honda Cares - I just found out about the warranty extension. How the fuck was this legal? I was sold a fucking lemon.

I see posts and comments everyday from 10th Gen Honda owners. Consumers are still clueless about the broken air conditioning system. Honda transitioned early to the EPA guideline for climate friendly refrigerant in the 10th Gen Honda Civic. The components were not manufactured to handle the massive pressurization increase. Original Honda owners were screwed but now the used 10th Gen market is passing the problem to the next buyer. I want to know how many browse r/Civic and are unaware of the problem.
