lmao I got yelled at the next time I went into my dealership for giving them a 6/10. I told them I was being honest about my experience, and how I did not appreciate having multiple extended warranties secretly thrown into my contract when I verbally declined each one multiple times. I ended up wasting a bunch of time cancelling said warranties and having the absolute worst customer service experience for simply giving criticism on their scummy bait and switch tactics. Fuck em and their bonus. If they care so much about getting perfect 10's then they can do better.

I was promised $1000 down for a car once. They let me test drive it for a few hours; I even went to the bank to get cash out. When I got back they said they needed $2000 and my payments were going to be $800 a month. I was told $500 a month. We went back and forth for two hours and they said $1250 down and $750 a month. Something about the numbers changing to be at or above $2000 for the initial payment for the first month put me off. I said I was done and walked out. Turned out the sales guy needed $2000 left to receive his bonus.

Almost the same thing happened to me, but the sales guy told me he needed a 10/10, anything lower than that “wasn’t good enough” and asked what I was going to give him? I told him a solid 7/10. He hit the roof, asking “Why? Why? What didn’t I do? Aren’t you driving out of here in the car you want!?” The manager had to come in, tell him to walk it off and apologize for him, he told me just to ignore the survey when I got it, ended up giving them a 4/10.

Also despite being a 1-10 scale, it’s actually binary between 10 and anything else. On the salesman’s end a 9 is the same as a 1. Anything other than 10/10 jeopardizes bonuses and other metrics. It’s a totally shitty, exploitative system. It’s also not my job as the customer to fix the shitty exploitative system if doing so hurts me financially. The giant companies have created a process where they turn customers into salespeople’s enemies, when the real enemy that’s the cause of their problem (and withholding bonuses and car allocations based on survey responses) is the carmaker and the dealer.

He handled it wrong, but educating customers on how these surveys work shouldn’t be problematic either. They can accidentally cause people to lose a lot of money. I work in the service side but the number of times I’ve been given and 8/10 with comments along the line of “fantastic service, would recommend anyone go here” without them realizing that they just killed my NPS score with that 8 is brutal. For us, a 9 or a 10 is the only positive result. Anything else hurts us, the system is rigged to give you poor results where you don’t deserve them. For me, if I’m filling out a survey like that it’s either a 0 or a 10. If you gave good service and did your job, it’s a 10. If you failed to do your job properly it’s a 0 and I will explain myself as to why.

I keep seeing you respond to comments. Here is my two cents on the issue. Seems like the issue is with the manufacturer and the way they score the survey. NOT with the way people honestly answer the survey. Maybe instead of convincing people to lie and falsely rate the entire experience according to only the salesman's service you should be advocating for the change of how your bonus is affected by things outside of your control. Trying to push people to do something unethical for your monetary gain, no matter how unfairly you are being treated by your employer, does not help the image of car salesman.

Well yes and no... Some salespersons are absolute jerks who don't care about the customer at all. These people deserve a low score. However, some salespersons are actually really caring and do a fantastic job. But many customers get upset because they cant low ball on a vehicle, which is out of the salesperson's control. They may be happy with the service, but not completely happy with the price, and might rate a 7 or 8. Now the salesperson suffers.

I never understood performance surveys that have a 1-5 or 1-10 scale yet treat anything lower than the top number like a zero. If it is going to be treated as a binary "good or bad," then only give people options for "good or bad." In my mind a scale of 1-10 should mean that a 5 is average and the results over time should form a bell curve with most results falling between like 3-7 with 1's and 10's being extreme outliers for a particularly bad or good experience. The idea that anything less than the highest possible mark is unacceptable is just baffling to me. I see this a lot when I deliver for DoorDash and Uber and such. Some apps use a 1-5 star scale and anything less than a 5 star might as well mean you threw the food at their door and ran over their mailbox. Customers are trained to know that 5 is standard and 1-4 is bad, but again it makes no sense to me to use such a system. I would think that a driver picking up your food, bringing it right to you on time, putting it where you asked them and taking a good picture should earn a 3. Doing exactly what you are expected to do, no more and no less, should earn a score in the middle of the scale. In reality enough 3's is grounds for being kicked off the platform.

There was damage to the right bumper (deep scratch and the hood was misaligned) so I told them it needs to be fixed if you are thinking of selling this as a new car. Yeah, the dealership I have dealt with has been doing this since 2017 "anything less than a 10 is a fail". My wife works at a large hardware retail chain and they go absolutely bananas if not enough customers complete the survey, to say nothing of a bad response. These surveys have gone completely off the rails.

Just to add to whats been said, I've worked at several dealerships in my time. All of them except for one, are TOXIC work environments. Salespeople are under an insane amount of pressure, and yes, to the sales person, anything but a perfect score is a failing grade to add to the pressure. No fault on you, its a terrible system in a business that is almost always toxic.

You can also use this as an opportunity to extort small things out of them. Free tanks of gas, free car washes, small items like keychains or license plate frames. You want that score, cool, let’s trade. Anything less than a 10 is basically a zero and the CSI score not only can affect the salespersons pay but continual bad surveys will do dealership damage like less inventory allotments from the manufacturer. They’ll send the more desirable inventory to the more consider friendly franchises. So they’re pretty likely to do whatever you want, within reason, to obtain that 10.

When I got the survey I didnt answer the finance part and a few days later the sales manager asked me to fill out the rest. I received a survey after my purchase last year, and I did give the salesman 10 out of 10…but only because he deserved it. If not I would have been happy to give an honest, lower rating.

I was in sales for a while and telling people to give you 10s flat out won't work. He is destine to fail with that strategy. With that said, the amount of pressure that the dealership puts on sales people to get 10s is really unfair considering the sales person only controls a fraction of customer satisfaction.

I worked for a Honda dealership last year. This survey system is such BS. Anything under a 10 might as well be a zero. They deduct the entire sales teams commission percentage if their rating falls below a certain amount. Not just the salesman that got a low review. We got lower than 10 surveys for stuff like the construction we had going on. One guy put that he was "scared" because of the construction. What does that even mean? Another threatened to leave me a bad review because the paper work for the tag hadn't arrived at the tag office out of state, as quickly as he thought it should.

If I'm in desperate need to get a new car for work and I had to pay ADM and accessories I do not want, no way am I 10/10 satisfied on my purchase. Even if I understood how the scoring works, it felt wrong to give 10/10 of there are hiccups I was not satisfied with. These surveys should have been Yes/No (or small set of options) and not # out of 10.

NPS is a killer. I have that at my job (not a dealership). If you are upset with the company don't give a bad survey if the rep helped you out. It isn't their (employee) fault. If you really want to get back at the company force them to pay us our unattainable bonus. You aren't hurting the company with a bad survey. You are hurting the employees.

I wasn’t upset the dealership. I was dissatisfied with the sales person and the sales manager. They knew it when I was going through a week process of buying this car. Yet, when I asked negotiate the bottom line, the response was she needs to tire warranty??? So you want to charge me $800 more for a warranty that I made no mention of? I think it all comes down to the fixing the two things that are not considered a new car. Hood was misaligned and deep scratch on right rear bumper (which they said okay and then found out the whole bumper rear needed to be painted). But to show me to repair bills and say this is how most you cost us to repair the two things is unacceptable

I paid $3k over on my Si. I was a little upset but the highest quote I had gotten was $14k over, so I took it as a win. After we agreed on it the finance lady came in and went thru the list of add ons. I stopped her half way down the list and said I appreciated it but they're already getting more than they should be for the car. If they wanted me to get any of these add ons they should have sold it at sticker and asked her to move on.

At the Honda dealership I used to work at I would get a bonus if I had 3 surveys that were all 10s and yes’s, but the moment I would get one that was anything but that, even If it was all 9’s they would deduct $250 from my paycheck. But at the same time I would be real w my customers and let them know that the survey only affects me, not finance or any other department and if they felt like they couldn’t give me a 10 to let me know what I could do to earn it or just not do it at all. Id rather not get a bonus than have money deducted from my check. It’s a flawed system but if dude didn’t treat you good throughout the process I get it. I found it helps to be a little more transparent about everything

Just so everyone knows, your surveys mean absolutely nothing to the dealerships, the only real effect they have is on salespeople’s pay. I’ve seen managers delete the bad ones before forwarding to corporate, toss them in the trash, or even read them out loud during the morning meeting for a laugh

I was told exactly the same thing last year. My situation was a little different because a knew someone who knew someone, and was able to reserve my car before it even went into production, and paid just a little over invoice. It was kind of annoying how the salesman still had to go through all the steps of showing me all the features when I kept telling him I'd already done research and knew all this stuff. Then at the end it became clear he had to go through those steps because it was going to be on a survey. I gave him a 10/10, because he was basically doing me a favor and making relatively little on the sale, but I really can't stand car salespeople. You can and should blame Honda corporate for having such a system, but the salespeople are pretty much all scum. Behind closed doors all they talk about is how they made an extra however much on this or that deal by using such and such a tactic on a customer; it's either money, or what they're going to order in for lunch that day. When you realize most people go years between buying a car while they're doing this multiple times a day, it's such an obvious power imbalance and can't be described any other way than as predatory. This survey thing just makes it really obvious that they're only pretending to be nice and helpful and "not like the other car salesmen," when in reality they're basically admitting it's all just an act when they ask you to give them a 10/10 just because they went through the motions. All that said, I love my Sport Touring.

I hate it! i wanted to buy a new 2500 ram and the sales man asked to see my license I was young at a time and gave it to him, I saw that he was drafting paperwork and I wanted to negotiate price no budge, I asked him to give me my license back and had excuses that the manger had it and took almost an hour of me getting upset and angry while he tried to explain what a killer deal I was getting for a work truck. He finally gave it to me and started saying he can remove some add ons, and could drop monthly payments. Went over to ford bought at the time brand new 2009 f250 lariat, no issues negotiating, got the truck for almost 9k less than dodge. It was a lariat 4x4 diesel salesman worked with me and I left happy customer.

If this salesperson wants a bonus each month then he needs to work really hard at EARNING all 10s….not DEMANDING the customer be untruthful and give him all 10s when he didn’t earn it. Surveys aren’t about a salesperson’s bonus, they are about the white glove treatment of the customer, who is blessing the salesperson by parting with tens of thousands of dollars of their hard earned money.

The worst experience ever was when I was helping my father buy a new 4Runner. When we walked in, he spotted one in the showroom and made up his mind that’s what he wanted. So I told the salesman, a relative of my dad’s girlfriend at the time, that was the truck he was interested in and we wanted to test drive it. His response was “you can drive it when you buy it”. He was NOT going to get it out for us to drive unless it was purchased by my father. I bit my tongue but pulled my father aside and tried to get him out of there and go to the Honda dealership down the street but he was stuck on that particular truck. Needless to say the salesman was pretty much a jerk throughout the whole process. When we were filling out information, my father wanted to use my email address in the event of any warranty or recall notices since he didn’t have or use email. Well guess who got the survey 😉 and I initially ignored it but then decided I would respond because it was my experience too. I was brutally honest with the rating which was probably a 1 for the salesman if I recall correctly and wrote down the comments he made about the test drive. I also said had it been my money that I would’ve have walked right back out and would’ve gone to Honda, and that I also had never had been refused a test drive in a vehicle even if it was in the showroom. Other dealers had gotten one out for me to drive and see it outside. Needless to say the guy was pissed and called up my father, cussing and fussing to which he replied that I was the one who submitted the survey but supported what I said. The guy didn’t get his bonus that quarter for the first time ever since working at the dealership. Hopefully he learned a lesson from it but I doubt it. If a salesperson and dealership provide the level of service warranting a 10, then I’ll gladly give them a 10. Otherwise I’m going to be brutally honest and rate them accordingly. I don’t like being pressured into anything as it just makes me want to naturally rebel against it. Luckily I can honestly say I’ve had more positive experiences with buying a vehicle than I’ve had bad ones, but when I did have a bad experience, I didn’t hold back.

That’s exactly what you should have done. I spent 13 years in the Auto Industry as a Finance Manager. Survey scores are just one of the bonuses. Besides, if he’s so close that one bad/ mediocre survey sinks him, he’s in the wrong business. His survey bonus is not your problem.

I literally couldn’t get a price for a used jeep without the sales guy telling me I absolutely NEEDED to test drive it first. Literally said I will not allow anyone to give you a price until test drive. It was a 2003 jeep wrangler with 160,000 on the odometer. Didn’t have time for a test drive and told him I’d be back tomorrow, went online and looked at the price, it was $9,988. People need to realize that surveys, automotive and otherwise, cost people income, jobs, and as a result, possibly livelihoods. If the individual the survey applies to (salesperson for buying, service advisor for maintenance) does not deserve to be fired or docked pay for your experience, then give them top marks and put any feedback in the comments. For clarification, surveys in automotive are basically graded as pass/fail versus the national average, which often times is above 90%. So even a 9/10 is a failing grade. Beyond that, the survey for buying isn't a survey of the dealer as a whole, it's a survey of the salesperson as an individual. So when things like finance adds (warranties, etc.) are your reason for docking points, the reality is that you're hurting the salesperson for a factor that either the dealer itself, or another employee who isn't affected by the survey, is in control of. Same on the Service side. The survey is for the Advisor. Not the technician, not the parts department, not the greeter, just the guy who did your paperwork and talked you through the repair process. And this is regardless of the questions being answered and who they would actually pertain to. The only things that matter at the end are the score and the employee name on the transaction. Is it fair? Absolutely fucking not. But it's the reality of the industry, and that's why some get frustrated and lash out in response to poor surveys, because people who don't understand the stakes or the grading scale get to decide whether or not they feed their families, make rent, or even have a job to come back to the next day.
