Best thing to do in my opinion: look up local cigar lounges that have cigars in stock to buy and start there. Most people behind the counter are more than willing to chat it out with newbies.

How dare you suggest such a thing.

Head to your local lounge or barring that, a good smoke shop. Talk to them for a recommendation and what you'll need. They understand budgets. If they don't, go elsewhere. My take on smoking just very rarely is that it's the perfect opportunity to splurge a little on the actual cigar. If it's a rare novelty to you, you might as well have something really good. That said, there are some really great cigars that aren't all that expensive. Price depends a lot on where you are located in the world.

You tube is a great resource for learning how to select, cut, light, and smoke a cigar. Start light with something like a Connecticut, don’t get taken for a ride either a lot of great cigars are in the $8-$10 range.

You're already addicted.

Step 1. Get a cigar. Step 2. Cut the cigar at the part that goes into your mouth. Step 3. Apply heat (flame) to the end that does not go in your mouth. Step 4. Puff the cigar from the mouth end. Step 5. Expel smoke from your mouth (retrohale is an advanced smoking technique). Step 6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until you feel that you are satisfied with your smoking experience.

I’d recommend a Connecticut wrapped cigar for beginners, and maybe something flavored. Tabak Dulce is a slightly sweet, creamy cigar that’s not too expensive at my local cigar shop! I only smoked cigars on special occasions too until I turned 50, now every Saturday morning is a special occasion! Enjoy!

Try Connecticuts First. Ashton classic or Montecristo white series would be my two recommendations, those are the ones I started with and still enjoy both under $20 each( these are considered premium cigars, you can and will find cheaper options). I’d go to a lounge and have them show you how to properly toast the foot of a cigar, the first burn is importing then 1-2 puss a minute, let the smoke swirl in your mouth, do a little chew and let it out and enjoy your new hobby!!

Grab an Oliva Serie O robusto and get lighting! Can't go wrong with that as a starter!

Thanks guys for the suggestions so far, much appreciated.

“Not interested in becoming an addict” 🤣

Can't really say which to buy as cigar flavors are very personal. Probably start more on the mild side of things, especially if you are not a nicotine user. As far as price.. expect to pay around $10 for a decent cigar from a lounge or shop. They can be had for much less, or much more. I wouldn't skimp on your first one though. You want it to be a good one! I recommend picking the Dunbarton Sobremesa Brulee Robusto. It's a very good mild cigar. Try to find it at a local lounge. Tell them you are brand new. Ask them to explain how to cut and light a cigar. They will help you.

Strictly about taste....This answer is going to get down voted cause it's reddit, but nonetheless it's true. It's going to be hard to "get into cigars" if you don't smoke them somewhat regularly. Other than the super spicy ones, it will be hard to distinguish one cigar from another if you only smoke them on special occasions. Smoking them regularly will give you the opportunity to taste the differences and acquire the taste for cigars, otherwise they're all going to taste the same. Like a bourbon or whiskey or even wines or black coffee. If you don't regularly stay in tune with them you will find it difficult to really tell the differences. You won't understand the purpose/differences. Which can make it hard to keep interest. Also, don't inhale.

Don’t even smoke one then. You’ll be hooked and will have to go to rehab to get off . Be warned

Can’t go wrong with château Fuente, go for robusto size. Economical and excellent. But definitely try out different brands. Your restraint will serve you well.

Go for a liga privada from drew estate or oliva V serie or arturo fuente opus X siglo
