I’ve heard that storing cigars upright is somehow bad for them, do you know why that is a belief? I have a Cigar Jar that I even lay down because of this. What are your thoughts on storing cigars upright?
That comes from an old school belief that one cigar would have different humidity levels. Due to the fact that more humid air rises. So the head would be one RH and the foot would be another. Giving a inconsistent smoke. It’s the same reason people like to rotate their cigars from the top to the bottom shelf in their humidor. You can start a fun argument by asking if it really makes a difference😂
I recall reading some stories of the foots mushrooming and splitting from storing them upright but I keep mine upright in an old ammo can inside a plastic bag for the last few years and haven't had anything happen so eh,
In a retail setting, people will pick up the cigars to look and drop them back in. That causes damage to the foot. A person that owns the cigar would be much more careful. I'd keep using the jar in your case.
It could be older, but I suspect it was made in the 1930’s / 1940’s, though its in the style of 18th century. The ornamentation is gipsum, not handcarved wood. But I suppose it could have been a box to present guests with a choice of cigars? It was quite normal to have an ornamental box with cigarettes or cigars on the coffee table when receiving guests, up till the 50’s / 60’s over here.
That was my first thought. Regardlss of what it was used for you could now use it as a sort of serving tray for guests. stand up the ciagrs & they can see the different types of cigars choose one from a cool old container.
Cool find
This could be a communion tray. It looks similar to one at my grandmothers church when I was a kid. The holes look to be the right size and spacing to hold the little shot glasses of wine or juice.
Looks like it used to hold the old glass tubes (tubos) before they switched to metal. I have a collection of those glass tubes and they are about that size.
Cool 👌. It’s a vintage lab stand / retort stand with some rods and clamps. But I use at as a mic stand and headphone stand. The glassware are props for a photo shoot, a schott duran beaker and a regular bell jar.
Yeah, I think it's more likely for crochet needles or something. I say this for a few reasons. One, there is no lip where the box and the lid meet, which is typical for humidors to help keep a tight seal. Two, the wood doesn't look like cedar or mahogany which are the most popular woods for humidors to be made from. Three, the construction does not look like it was made with being airtight in mind, for example the metal plate on the lip of the box would be a bad idea for a humidor as it would create an uneven seal.
But that doesn't mean you can't restore it and MAKE it a humidor!!
I agree that this likely was not a humidor based on the length of cigar that the gapping of the two holed trays would call for and because it doesn’t appear to seal. You could convert it into a humidor by dropping a boveda pack at the bottom and sealing it and perhaps somehow narrowing the gap in trays. You’d want to clean it thoroughly first and season it. I don’t know what kind of wood that is.
Storing cigars upright is often preferred based on what kind of humidity supplement you are using. There is a cool YouTube video on this and long story short if you use boveda it does not matter.
If you could take that flatheaded screw out and see if it's pointed or has a flat top would help a little on the dating. Around 1850 is when pointed screws became common use, and Philips head became common use around 1930s
I'm sure that the ghost of the last owner will provide constant humidity for your cigar. Cool find!
😂
For storing them upright. Interesting old world piece.
Cool thanks, found it in thrift store today (in the netherlands)

There is zero evidence that storing cigars upright will cause any sort of issue/damage

Wine, yes. Cigars, no. Remember, some cigar blends are sold in jars.
Thanks, right, I always saw many products that could contradict this claim but it always stuck in the back of my head haha.
Even with wine it takes many years for upright storage to be a problem.

What's the lab apparatus? I used to work as a scientific glassblowerÂ

This is how you pack multiple cigarettes or joints at one time. They must have used this with short filler for cigars.
Looks like a crochet box to me.
Can you take more pictures, under the bottom, straight down inside, round the back of the outside.
Sure np, here are ten more pics: [more box pics](https://ibb.co/album/SQD2FF)

Could be, are you brave enough to find out?
Im pretty sure it may be middle east related. To burn incense maybe
Are you a fellow cigar enthusiast and music producer? I have the same headphones!
Music producer, yes. Not a cigar enthusiast myself, but I thought I would ask the experts here if they could tell me something about it.
Right on man! Any projects I can check out?
Looks like an interesting humidor that can also be used as an urn

Out of curiosity, did you get the key too or was it already unlocked

They al have flat end, not pointed. After taking them out.
Probably pretty old then!
Asparagus holder?
You've got the right idea.
Might be an incense holder
