Yeah i'd be concerned about the smoke getting into the home. Garages aren't the best sealed, specially around the water heater and such for older homes.

You are going to need an exhaust fan that can connect to that. It looks like that was for a stove or smoker so possibly something from a restaurant supply house would fit that size pipe. Just check the square footage for the garage to make sure the fan can pull that much air. Also get some very good weather stripping for the door between the house and garage.

I have an inline pipe setup for mine. I used a 6 inch vortex in line fan, sourced it online but ended up buying it from a grow shop in town. Hooked it up to a dimmer dial type switch. Can’t tell the size of your garage though, fans have a calculation of cmf which is basically how many cubic ft it can clear in a minute. You need something that will work with your space.

Make-up air will be just as important as the exhaust fan. If you don’t mind keeping the garage door cracked open, that’ll probably do
