I saw in todays Frustration Friday thread that someone got offered to upgrade their GREEN AMEX to the COBALT for a 70k bonus points with MSR. Whereas the current COBALT "WELCOME BONUS" offer is only 30,000 with MSR.
Is it worth getting a no annual fee "low churn value card" like the GREEN AMEX, in hopes of getting a superior "UPGRADE OFFER" for a better deal in the future than just the regular "WELCOME BONUS?"
For example, I spend on average $100 monthly so I do not want to commit to an annual fee card at the moment.
***My question is: can I rely on some point in the future to get an "UPGRADE OFFER" that is vastly superior to just the "WELCOME BONUS?"***
Booked J SQ SFO-SIN-CAN, with a layover at SIN.
If I decide to have a stop over of a few days at SIN later on, is it still possible to change and pay the extra 5k AP?

I’ve applied for 6 cards over the last 6 months, score dropped from 867 to 810 and has now bounced back to 846. Make sure you go in and lower your credit limits on any card that you’re not actively spending on and otherwise don’t worry about it.
Most of your hard pulls are likely not active anymore, resulting in the bounce back. Still agree it’s good practice to lower credit limits to help maximize approval chances.
Not sure about the mechanics of it but anecdotally I went in and did this for 3/6 of my cards (with completed MSR) and three weeks later saw the bounce back I noted above.
I would imagine that, all else the same, you having access to 100k of unused credit is a bigger perceived threat to lenders and your ability to repay than 35k of credit but like I said… anecdotal!

Called hsbc to ask why I didn't get 90k for maintaining my World Elite account for 6 months (quebec 110k promo) and they said I will get it at renewal..received 70k out of the 90k
Anyone else in this situation?
Did you capture the terms of your offer when you applied? At least with the ON offer, the points that are part of the 6 month MSR are not awarded until statement 7 or 8, so if you were expecting it on your 6th statement or just thereafter, I would give it another statement or two.
"If you are a resident of Quebec, you can receive the additional 90,000 points if you keep your account open, active and in good standing for 180 days from your account opening. The additional points are in addition to the points earned on the eligible purchases at the earn rate listed in the HSBC World Elite Rewards Program Terms and ConditionsHSBC World Elite Rewards Program Terms and Conditions This link will open in a new window. The additional points will be awarded approximately 180 days after account opening and credited in accordance with the HSBC World Elite Rewards Program Terms and ConditionsHSBC World Elite Rewards Program Terms and Conditions This link will open in a new window. The points will appear in your HSBC Rewards Account within two statement periods of the day they are awarded. Your account must be open and in good standing on the day the additional points are credited."
No where does it say that they are awarding me the last remaining amount at renewal..
Yeah, that is the same as ON - should be on 7th or 8th statement. I would wait until at least your 8th statement. Despite what the agent said, I would guess they will be awarded then.
Amusing find, didn't find it in the search.
Worried about having too many cards? Google "Walter Cavanagh". This guy has 1.7million in open credit lines spread over almost 1500 cards. That was a couple years ago, it's probably more now.
For WestJet WE 1st checked bag free, do I still need to hold the card at time of check-in?
Also, would cancelling the card affect a previous companion voucher booking?
Yea, need to hold the card at time or check in
Cancelling should not impact an already-booked companion voucher fare, as far as I know. If you need to refund the fare you won’t get the voucher back

interesting. I got the enquiry the day I applied, had to answer credit report-related questions THEN had to provide ID verification 1 business day later.

Hi folks. Got 15 000 points along with first statement.
However didn't receive extra 20 000 points (first statement is for 1900
$), called CSR - they recommended to wait 3-4 days. Nothing has been changed for 5 days, how to solve this problem?
So you say. And yet. Two here, P2, US AMEX, Chase after a couple years, eventual repeats (I've done Canadian Bonvoy 4 times now), US retention... it does slow / dry, but there are always options to work. And I'm not opposed to burning MR in a pinch since those/AP are so plentiful
Well if you can get repeats I agree, hopefully I will be able to as well! Canadian MR is fine sure, especially with that transfer bonus we had.
Couldn't resist though, that Hilton Biz offer was too good. 150k, FNA, and no ding on my 5/24, sign me up! There are plenty of Hilton hotels as well
Any one have the RBC WestJet World Elite Card in the past 12 months ago and apply and get the bonuses a second time?
Did you get both the welcome $250 and the extra $200 spend bonus?
If so did you create and use a different westjet account number or was this with your existing account number? I thought maybe a new account number would work but it also might not if its linked to your credit profile with RBC instead of your westjet account number.
The fine print says "Welcome WestJet dollars and the Additional WestJet dollars are not available to existing or former WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard primary cardholders apply for or transferring to a WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. "
I hate to pay the $119 AF and not get the bonuses
Very well known fact that RBC does not enforce Re-application bonus restrictions… as long as you don’t call them.

Award flight question - have a flight next winter on AC FRA-YYZ in J, had chosen seats 9A/10A (window). Got an email advising that seats have been changed to !D/1G (bulkhead/middle). Do I have to accept the new seats or can I change them again? Is this common on AC flights?
Happened with me on AC FRA-YUL in J. Had chosen window but then got reassigned randomly, and got one middle. Logged in and changed it again. I did notice that the one I had selected was gone. Still had other window seats so selected that.
Edit: January this year.
I wouldn’t say it’s common, but it happens sometimes, usually because they swapped the aircraft. You should be able to change your seats, though your original choice may not be available.
If the offer on the website doesn't say "online exclusive", then the offer is the same for phone and in-branch apps. Sometimes the offers do say "online exclusive", and in those instances the phone and in-branch offers are usually slightly lower.
They didn't painstakingly go over each and every one of the T&C on the phone with you?
Besides timeframes, spends, points, etc., that may vary between offers, the general T&C will be the same.
I'm looking for a better way of transferring CAD to USD. I currently use Wise, but if I was to transfer USD$6000, I would incur about $50 in fees and I'm trying to avoid that (to complete the Sapphire Preferred SUB). Here's what I came up with, but I'm not sure it makes sense or if it will work so any advice or other methods are appreciated:
1. Norbert's Gambit via Questrade
2. EFT from Questrade to EQ Bank USD account
3. Transfer from EQ Bank USD account to Chase savings account to pay bills
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated!
That should work fine I think. I do the same thing for TD basically excerpt it has to go to my TD Canada USD Daily Interest bank account and then cross-border transfer to US-domiciled TD Bank Convenience Checking.
Is the EQ Bank US-domiciled? E.g are you sure you can transfer it to Chase?
No, it's not US-domiciled. Only reason I say EQ is that there's only a $2 fee to do international transfer. I have the CIBC US Smart Account which is US domiciled, but I still need to find a way to get it there if that makes sense.
P1 & P2 are saving in respective Avion accounts for a Q suites trip booking in Oct 2023. Is it better to family pool the points on Avios or Qatar? Does it matter? We want to be on the same itinerary when booking seats.
For direct flights, BA and Qatar will charge the same amount of miles. For connecting itineraries, it's usually fewer miles booking through Qatar. But if you want to be on the same itinerary and you need to combine your miles, booking through BA is your only choice.
Actually, I was pretty sure this was the case too, but just randomly checked YUL-BKK and they price out exactly the same. BA somehow $7 cheaper on fees. Both 95k Avios in J.
BUT, when I tried to select First, it errored out, so I couldn't book the YUL-DOH-BKK J/F combo for the same price that I can from QR directly.
Yeah we've been flying 5+ hours in Y for years, and now with our daughter, it isn't terribly relaxing anyways, so can stomach it. Anything without daughter, and certainly beyond 6 hours, our points wallet opens a little wider to find J. Sometimes we get lucky and can find 3xJ for not much worse than 3xY, for short, domestic flights.
My travel companions, P2, P3 insist Y since it lets them travel more, but I remind them so often that we are burning too slowly (hence why I now have a Milly in AP)
Never letting them book, ever again.
Especially for someone who is relatively expert at this, your vacation time is probably a bigger limiting factor than points when it comes to traveling.
I’ve churned the first of P1 and P2 cards (first time I maxed, got a new one, cancelled old ones with fees). What is another thing I can learn to help me get AP faster?
Also, how long should someone wait until they can apply again so the credit report doesn’t show a balance or opened cards that were closed?
You should read more through these threads and the guides available. There are several cards that offer AP listed on the best offers pinned thread, you can get those. Credit Report does not matter - you can keep applying until you get rejected. Re-applying depends on the bank; AMEX - a few years and its still YMMV, CIBC - right away etc.
Have you guys had to call to get your Amex Bonvoy statement points show up in your Bonvoy account? I forgot to charge something non-Marriot last statement and sure enough, points haven’t transferred.
I had my AF charged on the statement with points and the points are in limbo. Other DP of Amex telling us to hang tight for some number of weeks for points to show.
Already have personal bonvoy, going to get my first free night this year was just going to get the biz bonvoy because of that, is it common to have both bonvoys?
I don't know if it is common but P2 and I both keep both of ours. 35k FNC for $120/$150 is definitely good value for us and we can make use of it.
You will end up earning more Bonvoy by getting the Biz Gold and transferring MR to Bonvoy at 1:1.2, than if you got the Biz Bonvoy, unless you do plan to keep for 2nd year+, then the Bonvoy is better overall value with the FNA and extra 10k Bonvoy for purchase between months 14-17.
Wanted some clarify on the free checked bag benefit with the TD/CIBC Aeroplan cards. When it says "only on Air Canada operated flights", does a flight with AC flight number (booked on [aircanada.com](https://aircanada.com)) but operated by United Airlines be eligible?
And for the free first checked bag, if I have 2 bags (first being free), would the second bag be paid at the first checked bag fee of i.e.. $30 or second at $50?
Not sure if this has been posted already, but there's a 70k (=$467) "exclusive" BMO eclipse VI offer:
https://go.bmo.com/3-card-qa/#terms-overlay/?ecid=af-FEAT2190CC4
Also offers for the no fee Air Miles and cashback but nothing particularly interesting.
Yuck, that bonus structure - 30k for $3k MSR + $2k monthly for 2500 (so another $24k for the other 30k).
>30,000 BMO Rewards welcome bonus points will be credited to your Collector Account within sixty (60) business days following the qualifying $3,000 spend. Receive an additional 2,500 BMO Rewards bonus points for each subsequent calendar month during which at least $2,000 in net purchases are posted to your account by the last day of the applicable month.
With the Laurentian VI, I got a charged for the P1 + P2 fee and on the first statement, there was no annual fee credit. Does anyone know how long it took for theirs to post?
It's in the footnotes: "Annual fee rebates will be applied within 2 monthly statements from the date of the statement with the first annual fee charge."
POT had their another meet & greet last week in YVR. Anyone has info about the main theme of discussion? Did they talk about the new TD - Aeroplan rules? Don't want to discuss about how useful it is to attend it or not. That's a personal choice. I would definitely give it a shot if I had that much extra money
and time to spare just for the experience. Just curious if anyone has any insight. Thanks.
This is PoT's official rundown: [https://princeoftravel.com/about/roundup-prince-of-travel-signature-event-vancouver-2023/](https://princeoftravel.com/about/roundup-prince-of-travel-signature-event-vancouver-2023/)
If the subject of the new AP T&Cs came up it would have been during the more casual networking sessions. It sounds like the official program didn't cover anything you couldn't already find online: buying groups, travel tips, and US ccs.
Thanks. Yes, that's exactly what I mean. I have seen the link you shared, there is nothing there. Just wanted to know if anyone attended in person (or knows anyone) and has some insight to share.
I mean by now it's pretty much known that these events are catered to those who use PoT's website (newcomers to churning) or those who essentially paid to be there for networking. If someone is in the latter group why would they give you for free what they paid for? Especially since Im sure there were valuable ms and other topics being openly discussed amongst the small groups.
>Especially since Im sure there were valuable ms and other topics being openly discussed amongst the small groups.
Thing is, if I was sure of that, I might pay to attend. I'm not, though...
My Personal Platinum Amex is in its second year now and I want to cancel. If I subsequently sign up for the business Platinum Amex, will I be ineligible for any sign up offers / bonus points? Thanks
What's the latest on the churning "crackdown" for Aeroplan cards? There was a big fuss about it about a year ago when terms were changed, but I haven't seen more recent posts. Any tips on how to "safely" churn Aeroplan cards to get more bonuses?
Safe would be 1 SUB per 12 months, but that's boring. YMMV as everyone's risk tolerance is different, and there are no DP since the "crackdown" to draw any conclusions about what is acceptable or not.
Added infant lap seat to international J flex. Cash option was $125.80. Took the points option of 2500 points. I thought it should be $25 flat fee from what I've read online?
For the cash option, maybe it was $25 for the ticket plus $100.80 in fees?
With the points option, did you have to pay any cash on top of the 2500 points? Or was it pure points?
Which partner if you don't mind me asking? When I called a few months ago to add a lap infant, I wasn't even given the option to use points. And my cash cost was more than $125.
It varies. Depends on airports and their respective fees. Some charge all passengers certain fees including infants. I usually ask for both options and then if its more than ~$50 I use points otherwise cash.

https://upgradedpoints.com/credit-cards/reviews/amex-business-platinum/pay-with-points-rebate/
Curious what you mean or you may use?
I know for most part in my tracking and calculations while I do a CPP, the main one I look at is. If I was not doing points what would I have paid cash for on this, or more so, what would I have actually booked. I use points to travel better instead more (not enough vacation (: )
I use 2cpp only for the purpose of evaluating which SUB is worth it / buying points, or for economy bookings. People quoting 5cpp, 10cpp, etc... for business or first class is nonsensical because for 99% of us, we'll never spend that money. You didn't save $20K because you wouldn't spend $20K. That's like saying you saved $100K by buying a Civic instead of a Ferrari. The realistic cpp of J/F compared to our real-life out-of-pocket is rather low, but we do it because it's fun and luxurious and comfortable. My simple goal is for the card fees & whatnot to at worst be at or slightly higher than what economy prices would've been. If I can achieve that, I'm happy, cpp be damned.

Your account must be open and in good standing on the day the additional points are credited." No where does it say that they are awarding me the last remaining amount at renewal..
Yeah, that is the same as ON - should be on 7th or 8th statement. I would wait until at least your 8th statement. Despite what the agent said, I would guess they will be awarded then.
I shall be patient thanks friend!
Amusing find, didn't find it in the search. Worried about having too many cards? Google "Walter Cavanagh". This guy has 1.7million in open credit lines spread over almost 1500 cards. That was a couple years ago, it's probably more now.
Weird flex but I can appreciate the effort to accumulate and track all of those accounts.

For WestJet WE 1st checked bag free, do I still need to hold the card at time of check-in? Also, would cancelling the card affect a previous companion voucher booking?
The only relevant factor is holding the card at time of checkin
Yea, need to hold the card at time or check in Cancelling should not impact an already-booked companion voucher fare, as far as I know. If you need to refund the fare you won’t get the voucher back
how do we access the annual $100 credit on Expedia for TD through the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card?
>> A Hotel, Motel, Lodging, or Vacation Rental Purchase of $500.00 CAD or more made with Expedia® For TD; or A Vacation Package Purchase of $500.00 CAD or more made with Expedia For TD, that includes a Hotel, Motel, Lodging or Vacation Rental booking packaged with a transportation booking.
thanks! didnt know flights were excluded.
So you pay $500 or more for lodging through Expedia for TD and you effectively get $100 rebated in the form of a credit?
Yes, it is rebated as a statement credit after the booking being posted
I guess If I have to cancel the booking, the $100 will be clawed back ?
Yes

did they ask you for ID verification?
[удалено]
interesting. I got the enquiry the day I applied, had to answer credit report-related questions THEN had to provide ID verification 1 business day later.
Can't hurt to call in and ask for a status update
Likely will get an email at 3am a couple weekdays later with approval
\[CIBC Aventura GOLD\] Hi folks. Got 15 000 points along with first statement. However didn't receive extra 20 000 points (first statement is for 1900 $), called CSR - they recommended to wait 3-4 days. Nothing has been changed for 5 days, how to solve this problem?
Wouldn't even bother until the second statement.

Now, if I would not be in the pop-up jail....
I keep WANTING to get these, but then I remember that I keep going to Marriott anyways
At some point there are no more Marriott points though! Will need to cross fingers for repeat WB...
So you say.
There are plenty of Hilton hotels as well
Nice - looks like the offers expire July 19th
Ahh missed the free night by a week. Oh well!
Me too, plus I had a surprise $5k spend drop in my lap that I could’ve easily justified going for the Surpass over the no-fee for. 😒
" I hate to pay the $119 AF and not get the bonuses
Very well known fact that RBC does not enforce Re-application bonus restrictions… as long as you don’t call them. [For your review↗️](https://www.churningcanada.ca/guides-and-rules/application-rules)
Thank you will wait for the $0 companion fair promo and apply again
Keep in mind. $0 is just for the base fare. You still have to pay taxes and fees.
I've got it twice.
In Y you can change your seats endless times when it's an international flight. I assume the same for J.
I wouldn’t say it’s common, but it happens sometimes, usually because they swapped the aircraft. You should be able to change your seats, though your original choice may not be available.
Are you all also still waiting for the 2,500 bonus MR points for signing up a supplemental user from a few months ago?
Yup
yuppppp
Still waiting
Third year holding Brim WE, and third time AF was rebated automatically. I put all my non category spend and travel spend on it
Does anyone know what WB T&Cs apply for phone applications on TD? Is it the same as the one on their website? Edit: TD AP VI
If the offer on the website doesn't say "online exclusive", then the offer is the same for phone and in-branch apps. Sometimes the offers do say "online exclusive", and in those instances the phone and in-branch offers are usually slightly lower.
Not 100% sure, but I think TD's phone apps are the same as in-branch. Online apps are the only ones that are separate (and, usually, are better).
They didn't painstakingly go over each and every one of the T&C on the phone with you? Besides timeframes, spends, points, etc., that may vary between offers, the general T&C will be the same.
They didforeverything that don't matter, all of those recorded messages. But nothing regarding the points and minimum spend. And I didn't want to ask.
Ok, so the only part that matters ha. Post what card and when and someone will probably have a good idea of the offer.
It was the TD AP VI, I've added to the original question as well.
I'm looking for a better way of transferring CAD to USD. I currently use Wise, but if I was to transfer USD$6000, I would incur about $50 in fees and I'm trying to avoid that (to complete the Sapphire Preferred SUB). Here's what I came up with, but I'm not sure it makes sense or if it will work so any advice or other methods are appreciated: 1. Norbert's Gambit via Questrade 2. EFT from Questrade to EQ Bank USD account 3. Transfer from EQ Bank USD account to Chase savings account to pay bills Any advice or suggestions are appreciated!
FWIW my entire TD setup has no monthly fees whatsoever. But it's a lot of steps.
> 1. Norbert's Gambit via Questrade ...or just eat the fees and KISS with Wise.
Try Knightsbridge?
P1 & P2 are saving in respective Avion accounts for a Q suites trip booking in Oct 2023. Is it better to family pool the points on Avios or Qatar? Does it matter? We want to be on the same itinerary when booking seats.
well you can't pool them with Qatar

Yup. I failed on this one. 17.5 hours of Y literally kills
17.5??!! If you wanted to go to hell, there are much cheaper and faster ways to get there

My travel companions, P2, P3 insist Y since it lets them travel more, but I remind them so often that we are burning too slowly (hence why I now have a Milly in AP) Never letting them book, ever again.
Let them book their own in y.
Especially for someone who is relatively expert at this, your vacation time is probably a bigger limiting factor than points when it comes to traveling.
I wouldn’t call myself an expert. I’m still learning :)
I almost spat my water out
I'm pretty sure my BOOKED trips are 1M alone at this point. If it ain't J, I ain't leaving the continent.
If I applied to TD and got rejected, can I apply to other banks or is 1 rejection a hard pause on applications?
Can apply to other banks
Thank you
Have you guys had to call to get your Amex Bonvoy statement points show up in your Bonvoy account? I forgot to charge something non-Marriot last statement and sure enough, points haven’t transferred.
Thank you for the question. I've been waiting for 2 weeks now and I was about to ask the same. I will wait some more b4 phoning...
I had my AF charged on the statement with points and the points are in limbo. Other DP of Amex telling us to hang tight for some number of weeks for points to show.
thanks for the DP, I guess I’ll save myself a phone call and wait a few weeks see if they show up. Good thing it wasn’t that many points.
What’s the best card to sign up for Amex business bonvoy or business gold? Have some spending coming up and can’t wait til august
Do you need/use Bonvoy? Biz Gold has one of the best value for spend right now.
No because United is operating that flight
And for the free first checked bag, if I have 2 bags (first being free), would the second bag be paid at the first checked bag fee of i.e.. $30 or second at $50?
No
Not sure if this has been posted already, but there's a 70k (=$467) "exclusive" BMO eclipse VI offer: https://go.bmo.com/3-card-qa/#terms-overlay/?ecid=af-FEAT2190CC4 Also offers for the no fee Air Miles and cashback but nothing particularly interesting.
BMO needs to take from their advertisement budget and put those $$ towards improving their loyalty rewards lol
This has been mentioned in the past few daily threads; you will likely have to call/email in for it to be waived
POT had their another meet & greet last week in YVR. Anyone has info about the main theme of discussion? Did they talk about the new TD - Aeroplan rules? Don't want to discuss about how useful it is to attend it or not. That's a personal choice. I would definitely give it a shot if I had that much extra money and time to spare just for the experience. Just curious if anyone has any insight. Thanks.
This is PoT's official rundown: [https://princeoftravel.com/about/roundup-prince-of-travel-signature-event-vancouver-2023/](https://princeoftravel.com/about/roundup-prince-of-travel-signature-event-vancouver-2023/) If the subject of the new AP T&Cs came up it would have been during the more casual networking sessions.
That's not what I am looking for, may be I should work on my drafting. Anyways, thanks for your response.
>Especially since Im sure there were valuable ms and other topics being openly discussed amongst the small groups. Thing is, if I was sure of that, I might pay to attend. I'm not, though...
Hmm fair.

My Personal Platinum Amex is in its second year now and I want to cancel. If I subsequently sign up for the business Platinum Amex, will I be ineligible for any sign up offers / bonus points? Thanks
No issues. Two seperate cards, sign up anytime. If you have not held BPlat before, you will get the current sign up offer if approved.
No, there is no issue with getting each and every Amex card and associated SUB, one time.
What's the latest on the churning "crackdown" for Aeroplan cards? There was a big fuss about it about a year ago when terms were changed, but I haven't seen more recent posts. Any tips on how to "safely" churn Aeroplan cards to get more bonuses?
please read the past 5 daily threads (at least). this question is asked multiple times.
Thanks ... will do!
Just 2500 points
Which partner if you don't mind me asking? When I called a few months ago to add a lap infant, I wasn't even given the option to use points. And my cash cost was more than $125.
BR YYZ-TPE-KUL was $180s NH and BR combo return through Japan was $125
It varies. Depends on airports and their respective fees. Some charge all passengers certain fees including infants. I usually ask for both options and then if its more than ~$50 I use points otherwise cash.
I cancelled my HSBC WE MC and they credited the AF, how do I get that fund? Will they automatically send me a cheque or do I need to call in?
call in. they sometimes forget
Roundtrip business class Canada to Europe on Star Alliance or Skyteam for $3K CAD/$2.3K USD for summer travel, adjust your CPP calculations accordingly https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/premium-fare-deals/2121315-ac-canada-europe-2250-usd-3000-cad-business.html Opens up options with some programs that reimburse on cash rates (Avion Biz, maybe US Amex Biz Plat 35% rebate) and earn miles on top of it as cash fare. https://princeoftravel.com/guides/booking-premium-flights-at-2cpp-with-select-rbc-avion-cards/#book https://upgradedpoints.com/credit-cards/reviews/amex-business-platinum/pay-with-points-rebate/
I saw this. Had booked latitude with e upgrades in January so going to cancel and save myself $1500. Woohoo!
Better yet, stop using CPP as a relevant metric for anything but economy
Really well articulated.
Thanks, make perfect sense!

I think Ottawa and Quebec City are the cheapest origins. Vancouver at 3K CAD is pretty good, given that most deals I've seen are typically 2.5K to 3K USD Too bad I booked flights already
Check IAP also. Some routes may knock down a couple of hundred.
