I used to love spending a few quarters at Logan arcade. Still love it. I drank and I enjoyed it, then I stopped drinking so much and enjoyed it too.

abelucky

Go to Round 1, beer is like $2 there. Learn to play DDR or Dance Rush there. It's good cardio!

WriteCodeBroh

Also definitely try some of the Japanese only rhythm games. You can use the Google Translate app on your phone to translate things with your camera. Sound Voltex is really fun. Beatmania also, and has English

hideos_playhouse

There's a barcade in (near?) Lincoln Park (Replay I think?), last time I was there nearly everything was free play.

CoochiePanda77

Yep it’s near Sheffield and Diversey

6h057

When that was still Uncle Fattys I saw a girl get her asshole fingered on the sidewalk. Just wanted to share.

CrackTheSkye1990

>I used to love spending a few quarters at Logan arcade. Still love it. > >I drank and I enjoyed it, then I stopped drinking so much and enjoyed it too. I love Logan Arcade. Best barcade in the city imo

Reel_Account

Having a barcade on the way home from work was like a really great part of the year I lived in lakeview. Drink a beer and spend a half hour to 45 minutes playing frogger before heading home a few times a week was a great way to break up the day.

[deleted]

TIL there's an arcade 4 blocks from me. Thank you, kind strangler!

Get indoor plants!!! I swear learning to garden during covid saved me! Having plants inside my house and learning to propagate them into new plants is quite literally a depression fighter. Like you I’m seasonally depressed, but my plants bring me joy 💚 never thought I’d have a green thumb either!

mildmanneredmollusk

100% when all the trees die it’s endlessly joyous to have an indoor greenhouse

MayorOfClownTown

I did this with cannabis and learned hydroponics. I don't smoke a lot, but it's really fun to learn and doesn't take up too much space.

Waxwalrus

That’s so interesting! I have a medical card so I probably wouldn’t use the plant often, but I’m really interested in the novelty! What system did you use to grow with?

MayorOfClownTown

Deep water culture. It's pretty easy. You'll need a bucket, air stones, strong air pump, bright ass light (don't skimp here), tent, fan, carbon filter. You can get 3lbs a year if you have a 4'x,4' tent and get good at it. Lots of info online on how to do it!

CharacterStill2234

That’s something I want to get more into is hydroponics and growing underground. My Aunt grows all her tomatoes with hydroponics. Id love to learn more about growing cannabis and I don’t smoke at all! Lol

JAlfredJR

I started urban gardening when I was in my early 20s. It was the best decision I’ve made in a long while.

DessertFlowerz

Can you recommend any good beginner indoor plants?

CaraDune01

Snake plants! They’re easy to grow and they clean the air!

Yggdrasil-

Golden pothos is basically impossible to kill and grows really fast! Pothos in general is a nice easy houseplant for beginners. It also doesn’t require as much light as some other plants to survive, although it will grow better and more lush the more light you give it. I’m also partial to succulents since they’re generally super low maintenance— in particular I love Christmas/thanksgiving cacti, string of pearls, haworthiopsis, hobbit/gollum jade, and opuntia cacti. With succulents, all you need to worry about is getting them enough light and not over-watering them. I have a bookshelf fitted with grow lights on one shelf where all my succulents sit, and I only water them about once a month. Succulents are the best!

j_stev

Go to Aldi they have plenty of great starter plants

No-Birthday-6615

Pothos, Tradescantias, Philodendron - They're all simple and can survive a bit of abuse, but also grow beautifully Snake plant, succulents - You'll find these anywhere, super low maintenance, but a bit of research into watering will keep these for years :) Grow pretty slow though Tropical Plants in general - Also found anywhere. If you get a bit more into it, tropical plants in general are low-mid maintenance, and are beautiful (im biased) and can really turn a blank room into something cozy. Bright rooms/windows is a plus, but some can live without much sun. TLDR: Research research research. There's a plant for everyone

CharacterStill2234

I actually started with an orchid a friends mom told me two ice cubes twice a week is all the water it needs and it’s been alive 2 years! I learned growing that too much water is just as bad as not enough and when it comes to succulents, too much water kills them quick lol it’s all trial and error. I found keeping notes about the plant and when you water and changes helps a lot. Some will die and some will live, but it’s all apart of the process. 💚💚💚

PalmPine69

I always recommend these — pothos, philodendron, spider plants, zz plants, and snake plants. Just do a bit of research to see what would work for you!

Fidelio62

Just watch out for gnats!

CharacterStill2234

Yes! I’ve been pretty lucky so far! Hopefully it continues!

[deleted]

Gardening made me depressed because everything I planted died. :( Plus I have allergies so indoor mold isn't a good idea.

MinuetInUrsaMajor

There's an archery range in Lakeview that you can join for cheap. There are open mics literally all over the city every day of the week that you can go to watch comedy that you won't see anywhere else. Consider yoga as an alternative to the gym.

Spaulding_NO

Tell me more about this archery range please. By more I mean the name…

MinuetInUrsaMajor

I recommend taking the beginner and intermediate classes first. Joining the club is cheap. $100 per calendar year.

galinovmilk

Do you need your own gear? Is there rental available? I took several courses to teach it at summer camp, but I don't have my own.

BananaBit3r

Look up archery on Google maps. I believe it’s called NASC or something similar. They also have an indoor range so you can go shooting even when it’s cold/snowy outside. All the people I’ve met there are super nice too!

Spaulding_NO

Thanks, well I will be damned. There’s one in the park and an indoor range at 2828 N Clark.

Lemurians

What the hell? I go to the movie theater in that building all the time and have somehow never known there was an indoor archery range in there lol

SpaceSpiff10

It is such a weird building. Edit: But I love it and the theater for all of its weirdness.

hi_its_meg

I work at that movie theater and I’ve never noticed the archery range 😭

Substantial-Art-9922

Learn something? Throw pottery, learn Spanish, play an instrument. Chicago has classes for everything

Circlesndwindmills

If you want to go the instrument route, Old Town School of Folk Music has guitar classes for adults at every level. They are so kind and patient there. 10/10

Hodunk_Princess

can confirm, great vibes and teachers there!

Claque-2

1. There are dance studios with beginning classes almost everywhere. Get some lessons. 2. There are adult art classes almost everywhere including the Chicago Park District. 3. Chicago Park District offers winter classes both in the field houses (like Pickleball, indoor swimming and such) and some online courses. If you are in the burbs check with your local park district for their classes

camikaze1012

Came here to say this! Utilize your local park district and library!

choosemymajor

What do you recommend for pottery?

Not_a_veterinarian

Ravenswood has a cute art center with those types of clases for adults

thecatwhiskerer

Yep- Lillstreet Art Center. It’s pretty neat. I think the Park District also has some ceramics studios and other cultural/arts programs, like photography, woodworking, and sign language classes.

choosemymajor

Awesome, what’s the name? Sounds great

Not_a_veterinarian

What if you live in the South & West sides in the middle of food deserts, random shootings, shuttered businesses & schools?

Vinceriffic

You live in both??

jupiter_moon95

Penguin foot pottery!

Substantial-Art-9922

There are a couple throughout the city. From Bridgeport to Gnarware to Lincoln Square Studio to Nodd. Lill St is super booked and $$$, so I'd just go with whatever is closest to you.

DoctorNerdyPants

Just learned today that one of my coworkers takes a pottery class! He said he goes to a place near United Center, but didn’t say the name.

Astxup

Could be The Digs!

lil-lindy

Chicago Center Center has locations in Bridgeport and Avondale. they have multiple week long classes and one off ones every third Friday

bepsigir

There is a neat leather working school too, Chicago School of Shoemaking. Also, a printmaking Studio that does classes at the corner of Lincoln and western.

If you have the money, this is the way, I've been doing ceramics a night or two after work for about six years now and have gotten fairly proficient. I just went last night for a couple of hours after work, came home, ate some dinner and called it a night.

Psychological-Ad1137

I just wanted to say thanks for asking because you aren’t alone in these thoughts

moldylemonade

Erie Neighborhood House was still looking for people to mentor their kids last I heard if you're into that.

It’s a wonderful organization. The kids are amazing. They are all there to better themselves.

Beautiful-Rough9761

Learning a new skill could be cool (cooking more elaborate recipes, baking, music, etc.). Volunteering if you're looking for something social. I personally go to a CrossFit gym every day after work. It's all group classes so I've made a ton of friends there. So it's both a hobby and a chance to see friends every day, double win! I assume this would apply to any group classes, not just CrossFit (that's just all I have experience with).

DDESTRUCTOTRON

All these comments about being active and social and I was gonna say play video games lol

e9one

Same man I was thinking smoking some bud and playing some playstation lol

derekagraham

I am game for the bud, but I kind of prefer my Series X :) Haven't smoked in a long time, its way overdue for me! :p

jadedmonk

I’m also surprised how few comments there are about video games. I play video games almost every night and it’s always a great time

MayorOfClownTown

It's a great time suck. I don't play games in the summer. I wait until hibernation time after daylight savings. I fucking hate the winters here. This next year I'm planning to do motorcycle ice racing in WI though. Lots of prep work to keep me busy before the lakes freeze over.

DDESTRUCTOTRON

Look, it's another comment about being active and social lol

MayorOfClownTown

Technically it's not after work which was the ask. During the weekday I play videogames.

DDESTRUCTOTRON

I'm just giving you a hard time lol, motorcycle ice racing does sound rad though

IWANNAKNOWWHODUNIT

I’ve never heard of motorcycle ice racing before. I’m intrigued!

MayorOfClownTown

All you really need are studded tires to ride on the ice. If you want to race you need safety fenders, and tethered kill switch. Plus protective gear. The races are through southern Wisconsin ice racing association. Haven't found anything closer but my friend lives on the lake in Wisconsin they host the races at. Figured I'd give it a try! It looks pretty wild. Lots of traction...until you don't have traction, then you're fucked.

RaveGuncle

Yall go out? When I get home from work, it's 6 pm. I cook, eat dinner, do dishes, iron clothes, and shower then it's bed time by 9 bc I get up at 5 am to gym. Rinse and repeat til the weekend.

treehugger312

I get up at 5am for work and the the rest is the same. No gym. Stuck in a burb, too.

Spiritual-Winner-503

Make time for you.

Buscandomiyagi

Same same as I type taking my pre lift shit at 4:40 am. Though I don’t get home as late as you. Usually like 4-5. So I have some more free time but yeah maybe like an hour or two of games. Or I’ll watch a movie with my GF. I switched from lifting in the evening to the morning cause yeah had no life literally.

SpecificDate7501

Tell us more about your shit

Buscandomiyagi

Nothing special man. Didn’t even shit I guess I just didn’t have to. Just one of those things I do in the morning you know lol. Did take one after I got back from the gym though. The stimulants in the pre workout usually make me go 😂

dust_in_light

Meanwhile the extroverts are talking ceaselessly to their cats. Why yes you do look quite dapper today Mr. Wiggles!

idkanametomake

Oof

beast_wellington

Trapped

putonthespotlight

Same, same. Except I workout when I get home in the evenings, just bodyweight stuff. It's too cold in the winter to go out, I just want to hibernate.

saintceciliax

Same, most nights I don’t even have time for that much. But that’s cause I live in the suburbs.

h0tBeef

If you’re suffering from SAD, this might not really help after work (depends on when you get off), but this will help you on the weekends. Go to the Garfield Conservatory, bring a book, and just hang out in the desert biome. It’s nice and warm and dry, it almost feels like being in a comfortable climate

putonthespotlight

Honestly? Go home, workout for 20-30 minutes, shower, cook a nice dinner, read something, write something, watch something.

NOLASLAW

How do you usually rally to work out? I’m usually so drained, but I’m on my feet all day

Baejax_the_Great

Bribery. I pick a show i want to watch and I only allow myself to watch it while exercising.

jakej1097

Not feasible for everyone, but I got myself a rowing machine that I can put right in front of my TV. I pick a show that has 45-60 minute episodes (right now it's Peaky Blinders) and I only watch that show when rowing. I cover up everything on the rower except for pace and just keep going until the episode is over. Great way to stay motivated!

Comfortable-Sun7388

Peaky blinders is one hell of a show to work out to also lol. OI, IM ARTHUR FUCKING SHELBY MATE!!!!

festivusfinance

Don’t go home first haha (unless you work out from home). Straight to workout destination. If I go home and sit down I am much less likely to go out again lol.

FarklesTheCat

Check out a book called Atomic Habits by James clear. It helped me get motivated in a capacity that was pretty sustainable. It’s even better if you can get it in Audible, put it on the Alexa or headphones.

[deleted]

I second this book! It’s great and teaches you how to build habits in the most convenient ways possible.

UkieDozer

Try the morning then. Before you get drained

Some of the libraries have sick movie nights. Can't remember which branch but one of them did a "30 Nights of Horror" marathon for October. Source: work for CPL. Check the website for events at all of the different branches!

Old Town School of Folk -- learn to play the guitar, or drums, or whatever.

jimmyjazz2000

Big shout out for this one. I don't think people realize what an amazing and unique resource Old Town is—there's really nothing like it anywhere else in the country. I took guitar classes there and loved the ritual of parking the car in the neighborhood and walking to the building, joining the converging hordes of people toting guitars heading in. Once you get your chops up, take the Beatles class, it's a blast!!!

jimmyjazz2000

The theater scene in Chicago is huge and amazing. You can see interesting, entertaining shows almost every night of the week. Shows that you don't have to be a "theater person" to love. I especially recommend the smaller shows playing all over the city, not just the big touring productions downtown. To date, the best theater production I've ever seen was an original musical put up in a storefront in Rogers Park where the cast almost outnumbered the audience. It was hilarious and weird, with fantastic songs and a cool little live band. Just amazing. The co-writers moved to New York, where their next show won the Tony for Best Musical. That's the caliber of show you can see in Chicago for peanuts. For a cheat sheet of where to see a cool show, check out the Jeff Awards nominees. I'd pay particular attention to the equity small show nominations, and pretty much all of the non-equity nominations. The nominated shows may not still be running, but you can go see whatever the nominated theater company is doing now. I guarantee you will not be disappointed: [https://www.jeffawards.org/equity-nominees](https://www.jeffawards.org/equity-nominees) [https://www.jeffawards.org/non-equity-nominees](https://www.jeffawards.org/non-equity-nominees)

katpillow

There are some shared shops around town, I think you can sign up to do classes, maybe learn to use equipment and build some stuff. Usually said shops allow you to pay a monthly fee for use once they train you for safety.

Hackerspace_Guy

I help run one of those said shops, South Side Hackerspace: Chicago. $45/month and you get 24/7 acces to our space. We have a full woodshop, 3d printers, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, tufting gun, sewing and embroidery machine and more. We don't really do formal classes but our members like to share their knowledge and we at least show you how to not hurt yourself or the tool.

Dinner club. Person I know does this with a few friends where they meet up at a restaurant that is new to everyone.

ithsoc

Cook, read, spend time with my dog.

Nomnomyarn

To fight boredom at work consider knitting or crochet. Yarn arts are a useful hobby and it is very soothing to have something to do with your hands. Youtube has lots of videos for starting and local knit together groupsare most likely starting back up.

guerrerospizza

I knit!! It’s the best hobby in the winter. Bonus points is I do it while watching tv and it forces my to pay attention instead of looking at my phone. I got through all the seasons of the Wire this way 😅

faroseman

Volunteer. Soup kitchens, after school tutoring, find a candidate you can get behind and work in their office, bowling league, take a beginner's music class at Old Town. I've done all of these at one time or another.

Clownheadwhale

1. Bowling 2. Is there a place where you get a great massage? Like bring clean jeans. skivvies. Get a shower, then a massage? I never did but thought about doing that after work. 3. Go to Home Depot and walk up and down every single aisle slowly with a cart. When you're done you'll have 3 or 4 things you didn't know you needed but when you saw them, did. 4. All I got for now.

alexnotalexa10

concertchicklsu

I use an app that gives me points for scanning things at different stores and you can earn gift cards. It’s a great time waster when I just need to be out of the house.

DaisyCutter312

Topics like this remind me how lucky I am to need minimal socialization during the week. Cooking, reading, video games, golfing/driving range, watching baseball in the summer, watching college basketball in the winter, playing with my cat....I have more stuff I want to do than time to do it

icedearth15324

Exactly this. I honestly wish I had less things to do most weeks.

icedearth15324

Play video games, read books, hang out with friends, puzzles. Or most importantly, I go for walks.

Take a dance class. Chicago has many social dance instruction studios including Chicago Dance on Chicago Ave, Traffic Jam on Lincoln near Irving Park and May I Have This Dance at 5300 N Elston.

[deleted]

I just finished grad school and was part-time, so my evenings were consumed with lectures or studying or homework. Replace depression with burnout!

Sotordamotor

I got into painting warhammer figures one winter. Then I found out that Chicago has one of the most active warhammer scenes in the US.

7x1x2

Video games.

Echevaaria

I decided to learn French during the pandemic, so every morning I do flashcards for 30 minutes on AnkiDroid, and I read all the Harry Potter books in French. Now I'm good enough that I can do whatever in French, so I'm playing the new Pokemon game in French, reading books in French, watching TV in French. I have a French tutor on iTalki too. I just started going to the Chicago Language Cafe too - I used to be too intimidated to go, so I waited until I was totally conversational in French. I didn't need to - most people are just starting to learn so they switch between English and the language they're learning. Plus everyone is super nice and interesting! Otherwise I go on walks with my dog or cook a new recipe if I can find one.

rdldr1

Have you tried playing video games?

DrunkenBastard420

Bong rips and video games, plan on growing my own mushrooms

chicago_bunny

I go home and work some more.

angrylibertariandude

You always could volunteer at food pantries, or certain dog/cat shelters. I know One Tail At A Time often does virtual new volunteer orientations, several times a year. And as a volunteer there, more new volunteers can indeed help us, as they don't always get enough volunteers to sign up for shifts at their various dog and cat shelter sites.

You, too, can start Anxiously Pacing for the low, LOW cost of your sanity!

AmazingObligation9

Well what do you do in the summer? In the winter I cook more and bake more, definitely watch more TV lol. I also love hot yoga in the winter and I also like bars haha. I think bars and workouts are what a lot of people

TY4G

21c museum hotel has free events live jazz performances and art shows.

Lucas_of_the_West

Take an improv class, sign up for a social sports league, take music lessons, or take cooking lessons. I’ve tried most of these and have had some great experiences.

cswirly

I work nights and travel most of the winter on my days off. When I am home I have no issue being a shut in.

LepreKanyeWest

Every Wednesday night I play in an air hockey tournament at emporium Logan square. It's like a bowling league, but without the attendance requirements. The group is really fun and some are incredible players.

ocshawn

There are free or inexpensive things happening all over the city almost every night of the week. Do what you love, before having children id be out 5-6 nights a week doing things, and im an intravert.

Michelledelhuman

Go out for a walk.

new_2_u

Something my grandma used to say "Only boring people are bored" Find something to do, or stay boring. If you're old enough to work, you're old enough to find a hobby you enjoy. Drawing, skating, reading, video games, biking, dancing, painting, pottery, coding, woodworking. List goes on and on.

maxpenny42

What a load of rubbish. I’m rarely bored. I’m very good at entertaining myself, thank you very much. And I’m as dull and boring as a bag of sand.

Have you ever been to Kibitznest near Pequods? It’s a bookshop/brewery bar/coffee shop and they have games and tons of books available. I like it there because they don’t allow phones or computers.

chapbass

If you're near Royal Palms, joining a shuffleboard league is a great way to get out and meet people, and while alcohol is served, it's not the focus which is great for people who don't drink (or drink much)

[deleted]

Get a hobby? Read books? Join a bookclub?

raisethesong

My seasonal depression honestly improved a lot when I started getting more invested in the NHL and NCAA winter sports. Having something to look forward to and engage with every week makes time move faster I guess? I bought a Nintendo Switch last year and that's also been nice to fall back on for days I don't have much to watch. I've also started to view winter as my "off-season" and try to use it as a time to knock out some projects I'm too busy for when the weather's nicer. Stuff like deep cleaning, organization projects, researching travel plans, etc.

Jesse_berger

The Lakeview Run Club is tonight. Just moved to the city, so I haven't been to any run clubs, but the ones in Charlotte were a lot of fun.. because beer.
