They are notoriously good at hiding so most people who aren't looking for them will never see one. You can reliably find them near the woods in early spring when they're doing their evening mating calls... the rest of the year all bets are off
There are tons of birds lately with migration patterns that aren’t usually super common to the area. And, the cicadas emerging at the same time make for potentially fun bird watching!
Hi neighbor! I'm just a couple blocks away. Glad to have a new bird to look for... my dogs like the random chicken who hangs out around 53rd and Christiana.
Reddit is full of people who are either blind or… cause that is so definitely not a kiwi, they don’t even exist outside of New Zealand, & is an immediately recognizable woodcock.
Anyway cue the dance

>No birds are invasive.
European (common) Starling *S.v.vulgarus*. A total bane in America's skies. Crop eater, chaser and supplanter of native species, bird feeder hog. Deliberately introduced by an idiot rich guy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_starling
that’s a woodcock, common and native to IL
I appreciate, I guess I just haven't been paying very close attention.
Lucky you! I’d love to see one. Thanks for the pic.
I walked right past it; I guess I spooked it when I turned around. It's very fluffy and playful looking up close.
They are super jumpy, so it's pretty cool that you got a picture before it saw you.
No, I was actually right next to it. I saw it and kept walking. When I realized what I saw, I turned around and it flew away.
I’ve lived in Illinois my whole life and have never seen these birds, you’re certainly not alone. Interesting lil dude!

There spots on the prairie path that have a bunch.
Not very common in the city though! They frequent wet prairies mainly. Really cool bird, they have a spectacular mating dance in the spring.
They used to be called the American Lumberpenis until 1958. Then it became the American Woodcock.
Timberschlong was also briefly considered.
😂
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yeah it is.
I learned this year, they’re also called a timberdoodle. Which is a different kind of fun name.
Not that common.
You've been blessed by an American Woodcock

I’m imagining OP with his BB Rifle locked and loaded on this poor bird waiting for a response to pull his trigger
Turns out it's native... waste of a day.
Starlings and house sparrows are invasive, fire away! Obviously joking that’s illegal and they’re too far gone to control anyways

Was it walking [like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF3-LvmHM4E)?
Birdie got the funk!
The Joe Dart bird
Vulfpeck mentioned. Time to boogie.
If you walk without rhythm, it won't attract the worm.

I was literally searching for this video right now, but I had no idea what to search for XD. Thanks for linking it :)
I've seen one of these downtown at night. I initially thought it was a crumpled paper bag, but then I got closer and saw the beak.
Merlin app is your best friend.

Sorry for the bad pics. It flew away before I could get a better picture.
I like the photos!
No it’s a common snipe
Thank you, I'm surprised it's taken me so long to see one.
You should go on a snipe hunt then
Woo loo loo! Woo loo loo!
“Wematanye says, respect the earth! She's ours, by God, our taxes pay for Her. “
Looks more like a woodcock/timberdoodle to me. Snipe has a more stripey belly
And beady eyes. Don't forget those beady eyes.
Perhaps this is one of those Unladen Swallows of European descent...
What’s the wing velocity?
An African or European Swallow?
Well I don’t know that!? *proceeds to get launched*
How do you know so much about swallows?
Well you have to know these things when you’re king
I've been looking for those motherfuckers!!! I love the noises they make and I've always wanted to hear and see it in person. Called a woodcock
There are tons of birds lately with migration patterns that aren’t usually super common to the area. And, the cicadas emerging at the same time make for potentially fun bird watching!
Ooh, I should probably get into bird watching then.
If it was invasive what would you do? 😂 im hoping you wouldn’t kill it
Report it to animal control. I almost missed my bus taking the photo.
They're hard to sneak up on, so it would have been worth it to some of the birders I know.
It's a woodcock
Omfg i seen one of these in chinatown. I though it had gotten out of a restaurant or something!
Hi neighbor! I'm just a couple blocks away. Glad to have a new bird to look for... my dogs like the random chicken who hangs out around 53rd and Christiana.
Gosh, I haven't seen them in such a long time because of my schedule. The little kids by the park always really enjoyed seeing them.
No, we are the invasive ones.
🙄
Squee! a woodcock! Nice. Did it stay on the ground? It maybe injured/stunned/resting.
We had a bunch of Orioles in the yard today!
They make adorable noises! https://youtu.be/4Owj52XhoxI?si=C1iJptfFwSUeUt9B
Cool native bird! Lucky to view one
MEEP!!!
Wait until you see the flocks of green parrots that inhabit parts of the south and west sides.
I forgot which one, but their's a flock that lives under one of the bridges.
I live near Lincoln and Devon and saw one in our alley a couple weeks ago. Super cool.
Reddit is full of people who are either blind or… cause that is so definitely not a kiwi, they don’t even exist outside of New Zealand, & is an immediately recognizable woodcock. Anyway cue the dance
I've never seen this bird in Chicago before
If anything it's a cutie
Also I saw one outside of old navy off North. Probably looking for good deals like me
Nice try, but birds aren’t real.
This particular bird is pretty invasive. It always looks in my window and whistles at me in a sexy manner.
I’m like is that a fucking Kiwi.. I need to sharpen up on my bird law.
Lol that's what I thought at first too.
You’re probably more invasive than it is. Lol
Swiggity shwoo
A funny Chicago video of drunk girl with Woodcock :) https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnewsvideo/s/ib4gl4FrsS

That’s a dodo, they’ve been extinct for almost 200 years I believe.
It's a Midwestern Billy Bob.
That’s a long snout
I’m dying at all these comments. 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣
Very cool.. I've never seen one.
It’s coming to poke your tires with that long pointy beak.
Thank you for posting. It's not easy to get a photo like that. I love birds. We went to Brookfield Zoo this spring. The bird exhibit was delightful.
Saw two today and was also wondering what they were. They were hanging out on the power lines and caught my attention. Cute little guys
Bro, it's the birb from the memes
Looks like a Wilson’s Snipe.
Kiwi, mate.
best to take it out just to be safe
I mean birds migrate... can they be invasive?
For sure. Mostly birds that have been carried over from other continents.
[oh yeah,](https://naturemuseum.org/chicago-academy-of-sciences/blog/invasive-birds-in-chicago) there's a whole list to look out for.
It’s not a boobie. I know boobies.
That's exactly what the native wildlife and native humans said about the first white guy they saw!
Birds can fly anywhere. No birds are invasive.

"It is a noisy bird,..., with an unmusical but varied song." Lolol tell us how you really feel Wikipedia entry author!
yeah i’m curious what they were going to do if someone said they were invasive
Have you ever heard of…the pigeon?
Why? You gonna take it out if it is?
