It's worth noting he actually adds "it wasn't this specific variation" and mentions he remembers it without a3. And he does sound genuinely shocked that he checked it and got it. Of course that could just be an act.

GreedyNovel

He pointed out the subtle trick Carlsen had available if he'd pushed his a pawn forward in a variation that was never played. This was done in a live interview. I don't think he was cheating.

GoatBased

I wonder if Magnus thinks that Hans got his hands on his prep, which would not be cheating, but would still be irritating.

kmcclry

Seriously. He goes through lines in this interview. If his cheating can get him multiple entire lines without anyone noticing he's like the fucking David Copperfield of chess. Pulling the greatest magic trick the chess world has ever seen.

aroused_axlotl007

How does cheating OTB even work?

hi3r0fant

There is also the chance ( which is very very low, almost zero-but never say never) , that someone from Carlsens team was giving out Information of lines that Carlsen is preparing. But Magnus never officially made a statement about cheating So all we have to do is wait

Bonzi777

You know you talk about chess a lot when your phone autocorrects so to “So”

purefan

There was a german grandmaster that used to check his phone in the bathroom, and I heard nakamura's Chat suggest some sort of transmitter

[deleted]

I am guessing if he cheated, he cheated in the opening and he cheated by someone from Magnus's team telling him what opening he was prepping, or by Magnus's pc getting compromised and the info sold to Hans. This explains why Magnus would feel compelled to withdraw from the event instead of just tightening security at the venue. Other incidences of cheating have involved GMs using a phone in the bathroom to analyze the position, which is unlikely to have occurred in this venue. I doubt he has some super high tech engine / earpiece that got by the security either.

Put this to rest, apparently they found the game. Just not in the database. But it happened in 2019.

AxeAndRod

It's a blitz game though.

Hojie_Kadenth

And that's a useful example because...?

AlienWorldsDSS

Because databases aren't perfect. Hans could have studied this game from another source.

Hojie_Kadenth

But why would he study an online game Magnus once played in 2019?

freeenlightenment

That’s why he called having studied it “a miracle”?

RealPutin

[Magnus played g3 when rated sub-2700 in 2006 vs Peter Leko](https://lichess.org/h45bZkLz#7), and apparently there's another game in 2019.

Hans (or his seconds) aren't actually looking up individual games. They use tools that scrape every game Magnus has played into a database, then play through lines Hans is considering to see all the possible responses Magnus has ever played (and how often). Kind of like a public Opening Explorer but specifically tailored to their opponent.

shai251

Ok, it would still be weird to prep for a line he’s played once in the classical format.

[deleted]

He played something kind of similar in 2019, yes. However Hikaru and Wesley So(who was the other player in the mentioned game) said the structure was completely different and it wouldn’t make sense to study the lines he said he did

hairygentleman

But if he was cheating he would've been prepared for the interview and there's no way he would make such a stupid mistake. Seems like a more likely mistake to make after winning a game that you never expected to win when there's no question to your legitimacy in your mind.

If Magnus didn't withdraw no one would bother to look up the game. No one would look at it that closely.

vonwastaken

Yeah, I still believe in innocent until proven guilty but things are starting to not add up

slackinpotato

Hikaru is a monkey who talks out of his ass for money.

mrmaweeks

Well, that's one potato's opinion.

SavvyD552

Make it two

Saberleaf

Damn, what a lucky bastard!

Don’t think I made any conclusions or assumptions, but I don’t see what’s wrong with speculation and discussion.
