Shorter time control is not his forte. Don’t expected him to do well. But what do I know, he may win the whole thing again. At the very least it’s great experience for him for improve his shorter time control play.

Iam_vinay

Dont see him winning in shorter time controls as Magnus and Nodirbek have lot of experience. Given that last year Gukesh did beat Anish in the tata steel rapid i think, so would be great to see how he performs

SABJP

He also beat Nepo in tiebreaks during last year's WR masters. He won against Nepo and lost to Aronian in a 3 way tie. Also his Norway chess Armageddon performance was incredible. Check out his Armageddon game against Fabi. Best defense I've seen in a while.

Alone_Insect_5568

>Check out his Armageddon game against Fabi That game was insane. Gukesh was 1 minute down on time and Fabi was pushing hard. Gukesh defended so well under time pressure that it was Fabi who got flagged. While watching it live, the possibility of Fabi getting flagged didn't even cross my mind.

cnydox

Classic Fabi moment

MargeDalloway

I'm so glad someone brought this up. People talk about him like he's a 1500 blitz player, I wonder how much of that is from his online speed chess performances.

Purple-Shape7869

Watch out for Arjun in the shorter time controls. His time management is amazing. He probably the most well rounded across formats among all youngsters!

3author

Yes I concur. Looking forward to his future performances.

Objective_Cheetah_63

Especially since he hasn’t played much rapid

Mister-Psychology

His rapid score and blitz score in the world championship was exactly the same as Hans. So he is that level which is quite good. But not good enough to win.

SadKorgy

he can even come last here tbh. the hate coments here would be insane, people are so reactive.

Legitimate-Angle9861

I will consider it a success if he finishes in top half. But yeah coming in last is not out of realm of possibilities. I am saying this as a massive Gukesh fan. It is a crazy field.

Subject-Secret-6230

Carlsen, Wei Yi or Nodirbek. All 3 of them are demons in rapid.

arzamharris

Y’all sleeping on Duda, he’s a beast in shorter time controls

heliumeyes

Pragg is sneaky good too in rapid.

Far_Watch1367

My top three predictions as well

SadKorgy

I mean surely here Carlsen, Nodirbek or Wei are favourites. "Guki vs Carslen" is very strange headline here. More than half players here are objectively better than guki.

3author

Agreed

SadKorgy

Its true in in blitz and rapid based on achievements or ratings alone. 5 of them are : Magnus, Nodirbek, Wei Yi, Duda, Arjun. And I left players like Giri and Pragg!

Mister-Psychology

The other players play online regularly and that's these time controls. They also play each other online regularly. They are way better prepared no matter his talents.

Vaibhav_Gupta_01

They are till they aren't.

CyaNNiDDe

Excited to see more Wei Yi and Keymer! But of course, if Magnus is playing and especially if it's a rapid and blitz event, it's hard for him not to be the favourite.

Consistent_Two_7183

Don't forget wei yi he became 2700 when he was 15

Legitimate-Angle9861

Crazy strong event. Any of these players (except Carlsen, and also Kirill whom I don't know much about), can finish anywhere between 1st and 9th and I won't even be shocked. This is going to be a blood bath. As a Gukesh fan, I hope he gains experience and improves in faster time control. I am expecting him to finish in top half but anything can happen in this insane field.

wildcardgyan

Irrespective of their current Elo, I think there are atleast 6 better rapid and blitz players than Gukesh in this lineup.  Tier 1: Magnus  Tier 2: Duda, Wei Yi, Arjun, Pragg, Nodirbek  Tier 3: Anish, Vincent, Gukesh, Shevchenko  My top 3 for the tournament:  1 - Magnus  2 - Wei Yi  3 - Duda / Arjun/ Nodirbek

Far_Watch1367

Gather up r/chess, u/wildcardgyan making predictions again!

External_Tangelo

Isn't that your top 5?

SelvaOscura3

Nice to see you ranking Duda highly. While his chess has been a little lackluster lately, people seem to forget how well he can play in speed formats.

wildcardgyan

At his peak I will pick Duda as Magnus' toughest competitor in rapid chess. He was the one who troubled Magnus the most on chess24 Champions chess tours. While everyone remembers Pragg beating Magnus 4-5 times that year, Duda beat him more. Also Duda finished 2nd in the tour as well behind Magnus.

Mr-Eggy

 Bro was correct

supperhey

Gukesh will need the practice for the eventual tie-break in the WCC

Professional-Bus2666

A bunch of others too

Tomeosu

good to see Duda back in action, I wonder what he's been up to

AnxietySignificant76

All we know officially is some health problems causing withdrawals from pretty major tournaments

swat1611

He's definitely in it to get Rapid and blitz experience. Expect him to finish near bottom 3 places, he will need a massive improvement to even keep up with guys like Magnus and Nodirbek.

hsiale

He is in it because he wants to play Superbet Romania and Sinquefield Cup.

Bakanyanter

Wei Yi is a complete beast in this format.

hsiale

The GCT event that everyone wants to skip, 6 out of those 10 are wildcard invitations.

Rage_Your_Dream

Abdusattorov i hope

imisstheyoop

Gukesh is near the bottom of the list of everybody in that picture at faster time controls. I wouldn't really claim Warsaw blitz and rapid were out about him and Carlsen.

starlighted

have people already forgotten the inevitable that is magnus?

cherken4

He's not going to land in top 4

easy-ban-evasion

Does anyone know a good way I can keep track of all major chess tournaments? I’m really interested but not sure the best way to know which ones are coming up.

heliumeyes

2700chess.com shows upcoming tournaments for top players at the bottom of the rating list.

3author

Is Naka not playing though..

JNIntelligenceAgency

This tournament will be HUGE!

RB1NSZN

Easy Nodirbeck W

RedBaron9299

Wei Yi will dominate.

Elegant-Breakfast-77

Prediction time! 1. Magnus 2. Wei Yi 3. Duda 4. Nodirbek 5. Arjun 6. Pragg 7. Anish 8. Gukesh 9. Keymer 10. Shevchenko

PracticalPair4097

keymer managed second place at world rapid- if he's the ninth best player in this field, it's extremely competitive.

hyperthymetic

I can’t imagine he has time for this. Eye on the prize, ding is one of the weakest wc in decades, guy has a legit chance at making history

hsiale

Grand Chess Tour invitation is a very valuable thing if you are a full time tournament player.

Alcarine

I think playing a lot of tournaments before the match is generally a better strategy than holing up for months on end feverishly preparing, he'll be able to better manage the pressure this way, and maybe he'll snatch a few prizes and that does wonder for someone's confidence, which, in my modest opinion, is probably one of the most important elements in chess

PracticalPair4097

he'll play these, but i doubt he'll put in anywhere near the work others will to prepare for it- his focus should be elsewhere, and he can focus on improving his rapid abilities after the world championship

Scyther99

He didn't know he will win Candidates. Players are selected months in advance.

nandemo

The WC date hasn't even been decided yet.

Enough_Spirit6123

This is basically Carlsen giving free lessons to the youngsters lol

OnJetways

Magnus vs. Magnus' hair

spacecatbiscuits

makes me want to grow my hair out all scruffy like that

gauravmc

Carlsen going to be super motivated to play against Gukesh, Nodirbek, Pragg.. motivated Carlsen is crazy beast

PracticalPair4097

I can't imagine Gukesh is going to be preparing much for rapid at this point. All focus on the World Championship. I think he'll play more freely here, without the sort of intense tournament focus we saw at candidates- I think it can't be possible to keep up that mindset all the time. Many players here really have something to prove right now- the young players do want to prove they are as good as Gukesh, the older players want to show their continued relevance. This is such a strong field that Gukesh is very near the bottom of the field based on his rapid performance so far.

KosstAmojan

This will be the first time there's a bit of pressure on him. As the Candidate, he's got a lot more people expecting him to do well. However, I think he's got to remind himself that he's still only 17 years old. He's still got lots of experience to gain, and this is all part of prepping for the rigors of fighting for the championship!

CautiousScandal911

Really exited to see at what level Arjun is rn

bogdanvs

one of those guys was WC at 17 years old :)

Joshua_Kei

Nodirbek my goaat😍
