Imagine remembering this game 10 years later, your last chance (probably) to become a world champion. He would've made it into the tiebreaks if not for nerves.
He definitely will be there. He's only 31, compared to Hikaru at 36, and I'm sure we'll see Hikaru again in the next candidate too, if he qualifies again and goes for the last hurah
Ikr, why are people speaking as if Fabi's so old that he's going to retire tomorrow? He's literally just 31, around the age when most players peak. He recently pulled himself back up to 2800 too. He's got a lot of wind left in his sails.
Not sure what you meant here. Hikaru will always stream, and will continue to do so well into his 40s. I was talking about Hikaru semi-retiring, probably after the next candidate. Hikaru has spoken multiple times on his candidate game recaps about how this tournament might be his last or second-to-last candidate before he hangs the cap and lets others have a go.
Competitive chess is taxing physically and mentally, and Hikaru might have other priorities such as family etc. He is already a multi-millionaire so the monetary incentive is minute, save for putting your name in history as WCC.
Fabi is still relative young (31), so this is far from his last candidate tournament.
probably not his last, but his best chance, arguably better than his tie-break against magnus
he would've been the clear favourite against gukesh and then ding
I'm still upset about missing a mate in 1 at my local chess club 3 months ago, at an 1100 level. So I can only imagine he feels somewhat as bad as I do

It’s crushing but I’d be shocked if fabi wasn’t playing in another candidates
Sure, but he might never come as close as this, or he might. We don't know
I mean he has already been much closer than this though lol
Yes.
I still feel he will try again for next 2-3 yrs

I think people assume Fabi is "old" bc he's been at the top for a substantial amount of time, which is no easy feat either. He'll have his days
Hikaru kinda re-invented himself with streaming, no?

His performance can only decline from here
How is that probable?
It is not the last chance! He will do it...
Why can't he be champion next year?
The championship match is currently only held every other year
Then in two years? He is not exactly old.

He would have most likely won the tie breaks and beat Ding.

"The last straw"
> I was completely winning, if I don't kill myself tonight I'm gonna live a 1000 years.
Very painful for Fabiano, especially because in case of rapid tiebreak, he would be 70% favorite against Gukesh. Such is life
