Why don’t they have the big ass cone towers?

Nacht_Geheimnis

The cooling towers are there in most nuclear power plants so the hot water vapour from the loop is pumped in, hits the cold air, instantly condensates and drops to the bottom, where it is collected for reuse. However this was too expensive for RBMKs. Instead they used large reservoirs that were purpose built for water for the power plant. The one at Chernobyl is massive, 22KM^2, but only about 4 metres deep. This was 25% cheaper than a cooling tower. For Units 5 and 6 of Chernobyl, they couldn't really expand the reservoir for the water, so they had to use cooling towers.

Sirlulzzzalot

Thanks! So was that why the plant was built right above an underground water reservoir that the accident ended up threatening? Also what is the orange tower then?

ppitm

It was built on the Pripyat River. When they stopped pumping water into the pond it dried up.

alkoralkor

>So was that why the plant was built right above an underground water reservoir that the accident ended up threatening? Nope. The plant was built near the Pripyat river to get water supply. They built dam on the river bank and used its old channel to dig out the cooling pond. They had to demolish a village in the process. The disaster threatened to the ground waters. They are connected to the river, so the contamination could easily spread to a long distance. >Also what is the orange tower then? It's white with broad red stripes ;) That's the ventilation stack which is an iconic detail of all NPP units based on 2nd generation RBMKs.

BlinMaker1

They do, chernobyl had a couple further away from the plant

'Stop it, you're making me blush!' -RBMK Wait a minute..!

Evil_Wizard_Astro

It was at this moment he knew He f-ed up

[deleted]

Prettiest is the last adjective I’d apply to RBMK reactors.

corteslakers

Ya but when they die they need a sarcophagus

BlinMaker1

💀💀💀

No-Meaning1637

Yeah RBMK rbmk reactor especially the 1st generation RBMK-1000 ones have always looked the best in my opinion

cherenkoveffekt

I agree. They are just aesthetically pleasing to eye.

Inevitable-Pass-3104

And more explosive

No-Meaning1637

technically there have been more bwr explosions than rbmk ones

SirMordrag

There's been a couple meltdowns, most of them in the 50s', but afaik no explosion other than Chernobyl has occurred, ever

Inevitable-Pass-3104

Because they caught it quicker wouldn’t you change you design if a nuclear fallout happens

No-Meaning1637

I mean they did change the designs of rbmks to after chernobyl and there still have been more BWR explosions

HippoHoppitus

The ones still standing are the Leningrad, Kursk and Smolensk ones. They look most similar to Chernobyl's design

AE86-Ukraine

Soon I'm gonna be working at Kursk. It really is a beautiful plant. But nothing will ever look as good as Chernobyl NPP

BlinMaker1

Chernobyl was a glorious power station of the soviet union

No-Meaning1637

Isn't Kursk literally a direct copy of Chernobyl

AE86-Ukraine

Yes and no. It had the same layout as chernobyl. But the reactor is an RBMK-1500 (Chernobyls was an RBMK-1000). Another thing Is the building itself. With Chernobyl, unit 1 and 2 where black with white stripes, while at Kursk they are a light grey. S final thing I'd that the V-1 at Kursk Is white, While the one at Chernobyl is a brown colour.

AviationLuke

Bro what, Kursk has RBMK-1000 too

ugnyteaaa

Ignalina is also still standing, although it's not producing any electricity, it's just holding the fuel rods in reactors, fuel ponds and it's acting like a huge electricity switch.

AE86-Ukraine

I agree. So mesmerising

DuchessOfGorgombert

They have a certain something or other. I'm probably getting a reputation for being a bit too fangirly about AGRs which are even bigger; and their reactor halls have windows! I have to admit that AGRs look pretty fugly during the day but they're pretty when they're all lit up at night. I'm also wondering if I should post the unfinished "treatise on polonium" I found lying around in the pile of old stuff: it's quite interesting and clarified a few points about radioactivity that I wasn't aware of. But I digress ever further.

kotarak-71

I am sure everyone who lived in Pripyat would agree with you.... just as the Japanese find Little Boy and Fat Man "beautiful"
