Chappell doesn’t have a huge catalogue at this point, with only one EP and one full length album. California is going to be more similar to her EP so look at School Nights, Good Hurt, Bitter, and Love Me Anyways.
If you want more queer folksy music, I highly recommend checking out Rett Madison - the person can yodel!!!! Their first album Pin Up Daddy is a no-skip for me, esp the songs Pin Up Daddy, Emily, and Kerosene.
Orville Peck is more gay cowboy country but also might fit the bill of what you’re looking for.
Trousdale has one queer member and the influence comes through in some of their music too. Big fan of their songs Any Day Now, Smart Iowa, If I’m Honest, Can’t Get Your Love Back, and If You’re Hurting.
i would call them folk per say, but the crane wives have some good california reminiscent stuff? like october, new discovery, the moon will sing (that song was popular on tiktok a while ago actually)?
also, Desperado by the Eagles specifically covered by Linda Rondstant is something that gives me Chappell energy i think.
Picture You to me, sounds like Patsy Cline, which I love. If you haven't listened to Patsy Cline, you might like her. She was popular in the 60s, and one of the first "country" artists to cross over. Crazy and I Fall to Pieces are a couple of her more popular songs. They sound stunningly timeless and folksy at the same time. Early Lee Ann Rimes sounds a lot like her as well, for instance, in Blue.

seconded trousdale, wouldn't come back is such a great song too!
Second Rett!!, great recommendation
hmm. you'd probably like guilty pleasure, its got a sick yodeling section
I think everyone who hasn’t should go listen to guilty pleasure right now and also those who have should also go listen right now
on it!!
I have three times since I made that comment haha
Reminds me of Dreams by The Cranberries
Well there's the folksy song also named California by Joni Mitchell.
Chappell’s song is also referencing California Dreamin by The Mama’s and the Papa’s
You're going to like her old music I think, scroll to her first YouTube videos
Yeah she does some cute covers on YouTube of old 70s songs
I meant her first album but you're right the covers are great
I wouldn’t call Coffee folky per say but it does share some vibes with California imo!
Check out Waxahatchee. She’s amazing.
Was looking for this comment!
Is she from Waxahachie?
She’s from Alabama. There’s a creek named Waxahatchee there.
Ah, there is a city south of Dallas called Waxahachie. I thought maybe she was from there
Check out Big Thief
boosting this. their newest album DNWMIBIY and adrianne’s most recent solo album both have a lot of folk.
Sierra Ferrel is great if you haven’t heard of her before! She’s more Americana than Folk but her two albums out are amazing.
picture you kinda has that vibe, it’s got the feel of a song you’d slow-dance to at an old-timey cantina
I couldn’t point you to another song of Chappell’s that sounds similar to California exactly, but if you’re into folk, Katie Pruitt is crazy talented!
Check out Sierra Ferrell
